wow!! I never knew there were two different Woolworth's in downtown! The original F.W. Woolworth Co. 5-10 and 15 Cent Store was located at 920 Main Street. This building was designed by architect Alfred C. Finn. The other building at 613 Main Street was designed by Kenneth Franzheim. Almost every city and town of any size or importance in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century had a Woolworth’s Department Store. Houston’s downtown branch was located at 920 Main Street. The photo can be dated to 1917–1918, because during that time architect Alfred C. Finn maintained an office, visible on the left side of the second floor, in the Woolworth Building. When Woolworth store chain founder Frank W. Woolworth died in 1919, there were over one thousand Woolworth stores in the United States alone.

I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 15, 1965 and came across an advertisement for Weiner's. Looking briefly online, the company was started in the 1920s and ended in the 2010's following Hurricane Allison. A little confused. Was this just a clothing store, or an actual department store? Was this a bargain retail store? Anyone know more information about this place? I wonder if there were any in my neighborhood in the Texas Medical Center? I know HAIF has a few department store and retail connoisseurs. Fill me in!!

Looks like it sold recently. A crew was doing a pretty thorough interior demo this morning. No idea what is going in, but would assume they are keeping the structure in place to take advantage of the setbacks (or lack thereof). https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/3400-White-Oak-Dr-Houston-TX/26494761/

From The Houston Post dated February 3, 1926: $50,000 Loss in Kenedy Fire. The dry goods store of Jake Freeman located on Main street, was destroyed by a fire Saturday night. The conflagration being the most disastrous to occur here since the destruction of the Breeden-Runge Co. warehouse six or eight years ago. The brick building, the property of Ira Hinton of Oakville was completely gutted by the fire. Mr. Freedman had only recently competed taking invoice and he computes his loss at between $42,000 and $45,000. The building, which had a front of 60 feet on Main street, was conservatively valued at $12,000 with only $4,000 in insurance carried by Mr. Hinton. Mr. Freedman had insurance to the amount of $35,000. Only the bare walls of the building are left standing, Kenedy Advance.

I recently had Tapester's Grill's veggie burger and man! That burger was fantastic! I believe it was a home made patty. They offered me a frozen peach bellini as well! Great restaurant. Anyone ever shop at this retail center? The area has potential, with the abandoned police substation and water works nearby. This shopping center is owned and managed by MC Management, of the Meyer Family. Loopnet listing: Currently not available, maybe all the space is occupied? https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/4520-4534-Beechnut-St-Houston-TX/11995520/

I noticed we didn't have a thread for the Eden's Terrace Shops Shopping Center at 5115 Buffalo Speedway. I remember going to Qin Dynasty Chinese Restaurant with my coworkers back in the day. I've also been in that Starbucks as well. Website: https://edens.com/property/terrace-shops/

Any memories of the 1959 strip center located at 4122 Willowbend Blvd? It appears the strip center was 18,600 square feet. The strip center contained the following retail businesses that I know of. I'm sure there were others in its 50 year life span before it was demolished. Carolyn’s Bar at 10711 Craighead Dr. Fruit of the Spirit Community Church. Premier Banquet Hall. The strip center was owned (and developed?) by LeRoy Melcher of Melcher Investments.

I was researching the old residential estate at 2330 North Braeswood Blvd. and came across an article regarding the history of tenants of the house. One tenant, Joseph Danburg, owned a department store called Rite-Way Department Store. This would have been in the 1940s. They had six locations: 33 Artesian Place 511 Broadway Street 1902 Hardy Street 2756 Lyons Avenue 5334 Washington Avenue 7504 Harrisburg Boulevard I know there was a similar business called Rite-Way Food Market located at 5204 Bellaire Blvd. Then there was a plumbing business called Rite-Way Plumbing Co. Can't seem to find the department store though. Starting to think the article I read was incorrect. I wonder how they accounted for six (6) locations? Maybe there was a name change and that's why I can't find anything? With 6 locations, I am sure there would be a lot of business article and ads. Anyone recall this this store? I can't seem to find anything on HAIF, or any of the historic Houston sites around. I know there are a few HAIF members who are obsessed with department stores and retail stores. Tell me more! There was some activity at the long abandoned commercial structure at 2020 Travis. Workers just said that they were "cleaning it out", but they were taking down all the ceiling light fixture and pretty much everything inside. Anyone know what might be going on here?
