  4. I've heard this building will be demolished this month. Has UTMB already announced what will replace it? Or is this just to decrease maintenance costs for now?

  7. I noticed in an old newspaper there was automobile racing at the Cotton Carnival back in the 1910s. I just had to research further! There was a single mention on HAIF dating back 16 years ago. Figured I could create a new thread for awareness and information. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated July 31, 1910. Big Event This Week At Cotton Carnival Galveston, Texas Sunday- Pain's Fireworks. Monday- Life Saving Exhibition. Tuesday- Life Saving Exhibition Wednesday- Automobile Races. Red Men's Day Thursday Houston Day Automobile Races Pain's Gorgeous Fireworks! Friday- Beaumont Day Automobile Races Saturday- Shriner Day Four Band Concerts in Carnival Grounds Every Day $1.00 from Houston on all Railroads Wednesday, August 3rd, Thursday, August 4th and Friday, August 5th. The Cotton Palace — located at Avenue Q and 27th Street — was built as an addition to the 1902 Galveston Auditorium and was designed to house the Cotton Carnival’s exhibition hall https://www.rosenberg-library-museum.org/treasures/galvestons-cotton-carnival From 1909 to 1914 the Galveston Cotton Carnival featured a wildly popular auto race, on a track which ran 2.5 miles down Galveston beach, enabling a 5 mile circuit race, or if repeated, a longer race. The races were held a low tide, after a team of horses dragged railroad rails broadside down the beach, to smooth the racecourse and clear out debris accumulated from depositions of flotsam at high tide. (say one more sentence, what were winning models and speeds). In 1915, the beach was abandoned in favor of a specially designed half mile oval dirt track. https://www.torqqe.com/about/about-midkiff-warehouse/
  8. I was reading the newspaper The Houston Post. dated June 5, 1924 and came across this unknown park. Thought I would share with HAIF. Looking online, I see Bayshore Park is still active. John Cornyn and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, both of Texas, introduced the Emancipation National Historic Trail Study Act, which started a Park Service feasibility study of the proposed trail and its historical significance. The study’s findings, expected by the end of 2023, will be shared with Congress, which could then designate it a national historic trail. That would allow for a management plan and marking historical sites as permitted by private landowners."

  15. Many articles have shown the high amounts of fecal and other bacteria at Texas beaches. People also say that the poo comes form runoff from the many rivers that empty into the Texas Gulf. So the question I am asking is what can we do about the poop filled runoff? We can't just put filters across all the rivers the empty into the gulf!
  16. https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/texas/2023/03/31/448063/new-and-improved-galveston-island-state-park-expects-summer-spike-in-visitors/ "The 2,000-acre park that stretches across the island fully reopened last June after a three-year, $24 million redevelopment project on the beach side facing the Gulf of Mexico, using $10.6 million from a restoration fund set up after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. Galveston Island State Park was "completely devastated" two years before that by Hurricane Ike, according to assistant park superintendent Kyle O'Haver, who said the nature center and several other buildings flooded while some campsite and beachfront areas were lost. Much of the 48-year-old park has been restored, and some of its new storm-resilient features were explained to the public Friday during a grand reopening celebration. Among them are elevated grounds for campsites, the park headquarters building and some of the day-use areas, which aim to make them more resilient to flooding. O'Haver also said many of the new structures throughout the park are rated to withstand higher wind speeds than before and also are more securely anchored, and the electrical stations for campers are more resistant to water and salt."
  17. This project was registered in 2020, but they have just now commenced construction. They are currently boring holes for piers to be installed.

Holiday Drive. First, developers confirm the official name of the apartment complex is The Cove at GYB. When announcing the project in September 2021, developers tentatively were calling it The Dunstan. The development is a partnership with Houston-based The Brownstone Group, with partners Rocky Sullivan and Greg Pappas. Second, developers want to ensure neighbors understand the project is what’s known as a traditional asset and unlike other nearby multifamily projects, won’t include an affordable housing component, Christy Miner, asset manager for The Brownstone Group, told Biz Buzz this week."
