  1. Might be 527 - the teensy little spur that takes you off Smith and onto 59, and seems like it has speed-trap potential.
  2. Yeah, so perhaps the thread title isn't as catchy as "dead skunk in the middle of the road" ... but you gotta start somewhere! So there's this house I see, on my rare voyages into downtown to get cheese from the big Spec's. I'll be heading out of Spec's, so southwest on Smith until I get to 59, and just after I pass under the Pierce Elevated, on my right is this huge gorgeous old house. I am positive someone here has the skinny on it, what it is and what it was and how old it is and all that interesting info. (Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if there's already a thread on it and I just can't ID the sucka.) Thanks, y'all!
  3. I work in One Post Oak Central; my office window faces the Transco Tower, and I can see the back of the Canyon Cafe and Abraham's Oriental Rugs from here. So this building will literally be built before my eyes. Intriguing!
  4. Re picture 11 ... what held the floors up? I don't know much about building, but I'd think there would be some sort of floor studs or something.
  5. One of my work buddies is hatching a fiendish plot to screw with those of us who will remain after he's been lucky enough to retire or be canned, and he is in need of some old area Yellow Pages. He'd prefer '70s or earlier. (Yeah, I know, but he's picky.) Does anyone have any idea where some of these are available for purchase?
  6. Ah, sweet "progress." Not. I lived in Stuart Zidell's apartments on Briarglen and Bancroft for several years. I loved the Mid Lane area. It was hip without being Montrosely self-conscious.
  7. I can't find it on HAR anymore ... how much is being asked for it?
  8. I'll be damned. I thought Wastebury was always a hood-rat school, what with the gangstas and the chained doors and such.
  9. I'm frankly surprised that this thread has gone to 37 pages, considering soccer is for Eurotrash, Latino men who are far less macho than they think, and gay guys.
  10. Sheeats, those are AWESOME boots the stews are wearing! I wonder if I could get me a pair ... ladies' size 10 narrow, in case anyone has a bunch just layin' around...
  11. Hey, now! It's where the big shoot-out between Robocop and Cain in Robocop 2! (The Cain thing gave me all KINDS of nightmares.)
  12. A potless Willie - now THAT is a score of a photo. What are the odds?
  13. ZOMG, Coug, you're a Dulles-ite? What year? Class of '86 here. Quail Valley Elementary and Junior High before then.
  14. Wow, and now it's under $290K. Wonder what happened last week.
  15. Rweil, I don't suppose you remember a teacher named Mrs. Buck, by any chance? She was my grandmother.
  16. Personal story ... since I first saw this thread a couple weeks back, the Carousel House has been eating away at my brain. I don't recall ever seeing it in person, just pictures, but I can't quit thinking about it. So last Friday afternoon, after I got off work, I headed that way. I found the lot no problem - HUGE lot - and the pool is still intact. Walking around on the lot, though, gave me a weird feeling - very strange vibe. I got back in the car and went around the corner (literally) to the Formica House, and checked it out through the windows. It looks cool, from what I could see, but it also had a strange vibe. I wanted to look around more, but couldn't make myself. I am not in any way sensitive to such things, which is why I found the whole phenomenon unsettling.
  17. Sounds like you're thinking about Photon! There was another one in the general region, lower-rent, called Star Laser Force.
