  1. The folks downtown are complaining, but where downtown can we find something like this? An entire area dedicated to several music genres with glitz to boot! Downtown's elderly residents don't want that type of atmosphere down there. They are at constant odds with several bar owners on Post Office because of noise from the bars. This is what happens when you try and create a retirement community in your entertainment district.
  2. Moody venue not music to Downtown ears By Heber Taylor The Daily News Published June 17, 2007 I guess you saw the story that Moody Gardens is looking at a plan to replace Austin as the music capitol of Texas. The $150 million addition would include a theater for large events on a raised deck. Smaller places would be under the covered walkway. In the evening, strollers could walk around and sample jazz, blues and country. The Moody Foundation, which has almost $2 billion in assets, is in a position to make that happen within three years... http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.l...15efcfabf1b253a
  3. More like a faux Beal St. The Strand residents complain about everything (music, parking, etc). I really hope this gets off the ground. As a local, I'd visit this frequently.
  4. Moody Gardens makes noise about music By Leigh Jones The Daily News Published June 12, 2007 GALVESTON
  5. I agree!! Two things 1. West End Residents - From elsewhere, these "Galvestonians" are trying to escape "urban meccas" when moving to the island. 2. Galveston City Council - Seeking developers to develop 600 acres of land on Galveston's east end. The Daily News put potential growth at 80,000 new residents. Two different forces at work here.
  6. Are they really "The people of Galveston"? Think about this, some of those same "Galvestonian's" residential developments were frowned upon by earlier "Galvestonians" who were out west first. Now they have the audacity to oppose new development out there LOL!! By the way, they perfer to be called "West Galveston", seriously.
  7. My point is that if New Orleans can capitalize or embrace on something that can be changed, Galveston should be able to do the same with something it can not, (ie mother nature). Moody Gardens is constantly expanding its attractions. The only thing Galveston is lacking as far as becoming a national destination is advertisement. I don't see any Galveston commercials on TLC or the Travel Channel. I agree that gambling would help, but wouldn't Galveston just become a regional gambling attraction without national exposure?
  8. Moody Gardens, or Schlitterbahn maybe? Galveston IS brown water/sand, that's her! At what point do we "own" and embrace that (in some sort of positive light), and it become a part of this town's identity? It's not changing any time soon. New Orleans doesn't apologize for its filth. Hell, I wouldn't want to see the place any other way.
  9. Do teams play for the city proper or the metro? I got in a semi argument not too long ago with a guy because I referenced the Houston Texans as the "home" team (I'm from Galveston and he's from League City ). He said that my allegiance because of proximity was unfounded, and "stupid" because I wasn't from Houston.
  10. Cool, thanks for the feedback! Wow, your friend lives on Tikki Island and has never seen Cedar Lawn? I wouldn't know difference in race relations, I've never experienced California.
  11. Thanks for the reviews!! I'm glad you actually had the chance to explore this time around. Where is your friend from? The USA cable network movie "Road to Galveston" (1996) w/ Cicely Tyson was filmed in Cedar Lawn.
  12. I don't have any other suggestions other than the ones I gave in the "Best Place to Take Pictures" thread. You've prob already seen most of Galveston (what's worth seeing) anyhow.
  13. City seeks partner for flats project By Leigh Jones The Daily News Published May 14, 2007 Despite the cost and difficulties involved, Sjostrom said groups from Houston to the Middle East have already expressed interest in the project... http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.l...c5a92ed9e272ac0 Hidden Treasure The University of Texas Medical Branch is visible beyond the 600 acres of the East End Flats. The city hopes to find developers interested in transforming the site into a mixed-use development. Published May 14, 2007 Photos by Jennifer Reynolds
  14. I wish there was something more that could be done to preserve the language through the local schools.
  15. I'll just add pictures to this thread every now and again (all my actual photos). If some of you have pictures, please share.
  16. Some are, but the first couple aren't. I apologize, I should have made that clear in the initial post. Galveston Daily News pics, and a Christian group took a couple. I edited the first post.
  17. Just a few pics from Galveston Daily News, myself, & Flickr.com from this year's Beach Party...
  18. An inland port war between Dallas and Ft. Worth perhaps! Maybe not practical, but it would be cool if this were built somewhere along the banks of the Trinity. Something I stumbled upon... A second major influence for development was the desire of commercial interests for a shipping channel along the length of the Trinity River. This project, in its most grandiose design, was envisioned as a nine foot deep by 150-foot wide canal running upstream from Trinity Bay on the Gulf Coast to Dallas, and west all the way to Fort Worth. Downstream it would connect to the Houston Ship Channel. Twenty-six separate lock and dam projects were to be constructed. Today a ship channel is maintained upriver as far as river-mile 41 near Liberty, Texas. Although unlikely, if economic conditions were ever to make construction justifiable, a navigation channel linking Fort Worth to the Gulf of Mexico could still become a reality. http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/benbrook/...ion/History.asp
  19. The "One-Ways" will give you the true essence of Galveston imo. They run down avenues O & P from the east end to the west end, to about 53rd street. They are on the south end of the island (the beach side of Broadway). Of course, there's Rosenberg (25th street). Also, the rarely photographed Cedar Lawn neighborhood on 45th street should produce some nice photograhs for you. I just read the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge ( 2128 Church St) is giving a very rare tour of the interior this weekend thru May 13th. You should check this place out. My favorite structure on the island! Here's a good read about the place from Tuesday's print of the Galveston Daily News... http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.l...4003359f924e4cc
  20. Western Louisiana will suffer immensely, from Shreveport down to Lake Charles. I sometimes feel guilty just thinking about it.
  21. Yeah, he does paint Galveston as Vidor #2. As a Galvestonian, this bothers me. Aren't most of those hotels, restaurants, and shops on Blvd. owned by wealthy Houston suburanites anyhow? Somehow, Galvestonians get the bad rap for beach party closures.
