  1. It is hard to give a little when the entire thing was taken from you in the first place. I also like how your "assumption 1" ends with your own assumption. Nice.
  2. Wasn't this myth busted back when it was brought up last time? Those are demolition permits which include garages and other outlying buildings and maybe even partial demolitons. So your 170 is a bit exaggerated for homes... and of those likely many of them weren't really even demo... more like picking up the pile of former house that sits on a lot. I remember people making a fuss back in 06 about a house getting a demo permit but it was actually for the old carriage house that had burned down in like the 70s. It was litterally a pile of rubble with a few walls of framing still standing. Were a lot of homes that could have easily been saved knocked down, definitely, and many of them bummed me out as back then I was looking to buy a home and a lot of those would have been perfect for me but they never even got listed. The 90+90 day waiting/holding period for demos slowed them dramatically and a few other small changes could have been made to prevent even more of them. This is what everyone wanted and was sold when they signed up for the original historic district. That is a far cry from what the HDs are today. (the original goal was to stop demolition of livable/saveable bungalows, it was told to everyone a million times). Current HD ordinance and Saving Bungalows are about as similar as crap and chocalate.
  3. I saw that yesterday... no "open" sign but people definitely eating in there. I'm guessing they are in more of a "soft" opening stage right now? I'll get check it out soon.
  4. It is completely foolish to think because of the mayoral voting people don't care. It isn't a one or the other issue. A lot of your people that aren't speaking against are ones that it hasn't impacted. If you just live in HD and are happy living there and don't plan on any renovations why would you care? It is people who are renovating or planning to rennovate that are the ones coming out against the ordinance. I live outside of the district... so my personal dwelling isn't impacted. I speak against the HD because I don't want it coming to block. No one gives a damn until it impacts them... (as you can see from several people coming to this site to gain support in regards to their renovations being denied).
  5. I'd like to see more of a Cafe in the cricket location, and the Kraftsmen more of a bakery/coffee shop. Curious to see what actually happens.
  6. Who's anti-preservation? I've saved 2 bungalows (one here and one in Louisiana) from the bulldozers and I'm about to restore a late 40s or early 50s car that has likely been rusting in a field somewhere. I'm all about preservation. I am however anti ordinance. I would have liked to vote for someone else, but Parker was the only candidate that I think will be able to do anything positive (she has momentum already and I fully support all of her push for bicycle friendliness and parks). If there was a suitable opponent I would gladly have thrown my support their way, but there wasn't.
  7. I have my qualms with Mayor Parker, but I also really support some of her ideas too. Since this is her final term and no real suitable opponent... I was actually considering voting for her even as against the HDs as I am. (I came down with the flu on election day unfortunately)
  8. That makes no sense. I live in and own a historic home(s), so my opinion on historic homes would hold a lot more clout than Mr. Marsh's. Owning a home in an HD gives you plenty of reason to be concerned about the HDs. Your trying to make a connection between the two that isn't there. (also you don't see me going in front of the commission to sway them either) With sashguy... you know good and well thats not what happened.
  9. i don't live in one... but that doesn't mean I don't own a property in one...
  10. LIke when people gloat about the HD's and threaten those who opposed it. True Colors indeed. You still fail to acknowledge that Mr. Marsh's opinions are baseless as he himself lives in a newer large sq. ft home. At least the retiree people trying to keep property taxes down live in the old houses they are trying to "protect". I know a few of those types... and although they agree with you on supporting the HDs (most of them admit it is for selfish reasons), I've heard them say how much they really hate all these people who have recently moved in to the neighborhood and act like they own the place.
  11. Uhm... every addition that is denied by the commission is by definition stagnating the growth of larger homes... no to mention projects that are being delayed because of the HD. You also don't get to decide for the neighborhood that it is getting too top heavy. (are you saying you want lower property values?) Face it, Mr. Marsh has a obvious conflict of interested and no real basis for his argument other than he just doesn't want it. Like I said.. he has every right to make his opinion known, but others should have the right to call him out on his opinion since he doesn't even live in a historic property himself. When Bungalow Revival projects are being delayed that is a pretty clear indication of the HAHC causing stagnation or in the very least delay (more expensive). As many have mentioned, we expect the power mongers of the HAHC to continually be more restrictive and unpredictable, so what is currently on the market and approved doesn't really mean crap to those who want to rennovate in the future.
  12. I highly doubt Marksmu thinks that every ordinance supporter is a retiree trying to suppress property values. (quit calling them preservationists as that is an intentional misdirection) There are a lot of people that fit in to that bucket (some of them very vocal), Mr. Marsh happens to be in a different group of people. Neither of us can be solely right because there is no argument. I guess your wrong (for having the thought that we are so narrow minded) Why don't you address what I stated though instead of trying to turn things around and dodge what I said... restricting additions makes Mr. Marsh's house more desirable as the stock of newer, modern, and larger sq. footage houses is held stagnant (or at least reducing the growth of these homes). He has every right to say whatever he wants, but excluding the fact that he lives in a modern home (I didn't listen to the whole thing but it appeared that he was implying that he lived in a home like the one in question) was intentional as that would take a bit of wind of his sails if it was known.
  13. Seems like it would be in Mr. Marsh's best interest to prevent anyone from adding on to their home, it makes his adequately sized newer home even more valuable. There is a personal gain there that puts his opinions in a conflict of interest with the contributing structures owners which makes any opinion on scope/style pointless.
  14. Morrison, what you describe would take the dedication of people's lives... versus a few minutes on a keyboard sporadically throughout the day. It is also obvious then to the most casual observer that 1 person had dedicated their life to the support of the historic commission.
  15. isnt there enough ammo to get this thrown out by now. In the least this clown needs to be removed...
  16. Is this in the former Jeanine's Bistro spot? Remember back when people were saying Jus' Mac was too niche and would never make it. = ]
  17. Dollar store and Fred's Super dollar... HAHAHA if you'd ever seen either of those you'd get how much of a joke that is. Brookeshire's is a grocery store... not exactly the best place to go get home products. Brookeshire's is almost always more expensive as well, as they still try to provide full service to their customers (someone carries your grocery's out to your car for you, and they are not supposed to take tips as part of brookeshire's policy). You are really reaching for straws on this one.
  18. Being from this part of the world, I can tell you first had that there would likely have been riots if EBT cards were denied for a system issue. I worked at a Brookeshires Grocery store when the EBT system broke once (this is when the Lagniappe Cards were brand new) and when we told the customers we couldn't process their cards because of a system glitch we had to call the police because some of the customers started throwing things at us (one person got hit with a can and actually cut their head). You don't just go across the street to another store... your showing your ignorance there for sure. Springhill is a very small rural town that is a good distance from even a small city (shreveport). I haven't been there since highschool track meets, but back then they i don't think they even had a walmart, so I'd imagine it is probably the only big discount store in town.
  19. How dare Brie state EXACTLY what happened.
  20. So I can swap out all my windows in my HD home and not have to get HAHC approval?
  21. Yeah a simple no thanks would have sufficed. What a schmuck.
  22. You are not being honest. There are many more factors in the remodeling than to be architecturally harmonious. Many of these additions were poorly designed attic builds, which are being replaced with nice rebuilds. This isn't just about the architecture, a lot of it is about making the house more livable to today's standards. (which for most the original bungalows can not do). You arguement is completely disingenious. As far as your last statement... even though it doesn't make any sense whatsoever... I'll try to address it. Woodland Heights (even outside of the HD) is a pretty solid block of historic homes. They aren't being "developed" because they are already mostly built out. You are saying that despite being built out, the developers will buy the houses up and smash them to build Katy Heights. People are choosing to do renovations/additions on these homes outside of the HDs without any silly HAHC or overbearing rules. Even with rather weak deed restrictions. Nobody said anything about people running and screaming from HD to non-HD areas... but someone buying a home planning to do renovations would definitely look into outside of the HD instead of inside of the HD. That doesn't change the fact that people wanting to do renovations in the HD are pissed off when they find out the hoops they have to jump through just to change out a dang window.
  23. Allston house was a crap addition. (wasn't it barely walkable cause the roof was so low?) If what you are saying was true... since a large chunk of woodland heights is not in the district... how come we didn't see whole blocks get developed? Heck there is a chunk of 4-5 lots that is sitting vacant on Pecore that nothing has happened with. It is just more S3mh being S3mh, saying if we don't do things your way, the only alternative is DOOM. If you really think any recent addition in the heights will ever be removed for the house to go back to it's orginal size, your are more off your rocker than I could have ever imagined. My addition/renovation is going to cost somewhere in the 200-250k price range. This is a pretty typical cost to do a full scale renovation/expansion. Do you really think someone would removed a 1/4 million dollar addition to get back to the original 2/1? What did the sq. footage end up being on the Allston house? You have not seen the addition be removed several times... that is a blatant lie. (i've seen a few removed, to be replaced by a different addition but that isn't what we are talking about.)
  24. Is that really your best argument. Developers are going to go build ugly houses that don't fit in just because. Obviously they will build what sells. People want front porches, with crafstman or victorian architectural styling. You go through the trouble because it is the right way to do it. Architectural cacophony??? the HD actively wants additons to be blatant, so they could be removed to go back to the original house (which will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER NEVER happen)... what could be less harmonious than that?
