    I doodled this up today, this is my heavy rail plan, obviously buyin the summit and turning it into a Central Station.

    If it was up to me, I'd build out the current university line, except down westheimer which was the original plan, and also the uptown line. In addition, extend the southeast and east end lines to both meet at Hobby Airport, and then have one line from Hobby go down to Pearland. Also, a line down parallel to washington/memorial/allen parkway to connect to northwest transit center. Possibly further ROW could be used for BRT lines. And then commuter extensions, I'd eliminate HOV lanes and put commuter rail lines there instead, similar to Chicago. Technically light rail could work there since it can go up to 65 mph. One down 45 from Woodlands to Galveston with major stops at Greenspoint and Downtown and extensions to Hobby airport and IAH, one from Katy into Houston on I-10 with a major stop at northwest transit center to pick up people coming from 290 line, then Sugar Land to Humble on 59, with an IAH connector and a major stop at Greenway plaza as well as Hillcroft transit center. Also one up 290 to Cypress. These lines could all end up at a major downtown intermodal center. In addition, a line starting at hillcroft transit center down westpark ROW until highway 6. With both light rail in the city and out to the suburbs, I think the majority of residents would be satisfied, because even if coming into the city, residents would have a good way to get around the inner portion of the city as well. Also buses would feed into train stops, so people could get places from train stops. This does leave 249 high and dry though I'll admit. Also would remove pierce elevated, 59 from 45 to 10, and 10 between 45 and 59, to help regenerate life in downtown. There are already good exits into downtown from 45 south, 45 north, 59 north, 59 south, 10 east, 10 west, and 288 north anyway. This plan would make the northwest transit center, hillcroft transit center, IAH, Hobby, Galleria, Greenway Plaza, Galveston, Woodlands, Cypress, Pearland, Sugar Land, Humble, Katy, and Downtown major transit hubs. Also, have the interstate bikeways built. Probably will never happen, but we can all hope. Thoughts?

    This is one of the most annoying aspects of the Texas legislature. For a state that theoretically embraces the free market system, the legislative support of the tiered distribution system is really dumb. This is the exact same as what has happened to the craft breweries.

    Yes I rely on the bus. No, I don't think investing in billions of dollars of more rail is the solution. The bus system is the life blood of the Metro system. It is the brain, heart and skeleton of the system. The rail "system" we have amounts to three fingers. If the body is rotting does it make sense to add more fingers or to rehabilitate the body? I'm on the bus system re-imagining committee and it's refreshing all light rail talk is limited on how it will interact with a more robust and improved bus system instead of dominating the discussion with no regard or even acknowledgement of the bus system as has been the rule for a decade. Slick, you are what's wrong with the transit discussion in this region. You don't bring any viable solutions, only a child's wishlist.

Five of the 10 fastest-growing cities in the country between 2011 and 2012 were in Texas, according to new figures from the US Census Bureau. New York is way out in front in terms of added population, but Houston is second with San Antonio and Austin fourth and fifth. In terms of percentage growth, it's even more Texas, Texas, Texas. Among the five cities that grew most, as a proportion of their size, between 2011 and 2012, three are Texan. San Marcos is out in front with the highest rate of growth among all US cities and towns - 4.9%. Some of this Texan population boom is due to a natural increase - more births than deaths - but the numbers moving into the state from elsewhere in the US and from abroad far outstrip every other American state.     My bad.., chill out bruh. I guess stone looks a lot like stucco to some. But I agree most of the newer stuff is a step down from older buildings like Four Leaf Towers.

You need to move to the suburbs and quit polluting the planet.

    And the economic growth that those suburbs represent is what allows you to live your lifestyle instead of tending cattle all day. It must be blissful to be able to only look at half the picture and not be aware of the other half of the equation.

    It was really just a joke about the general perception of hipsters being too cool to like anything. I'm familiar with Gonzo247 and agree that he does some very cool stuff.

    I see this a lot in the arguments by mass transit supporters and new urbanists. There is a less than subtle insinuation that people are inherently stupid, and that government should force them into dense cities, force them onto trains, for their own good. I see this trend throughout Slick Vik's posts, especially the ones about the GM conspiracy. The GM conspiracy occurred because people are stupid and easily led to the suburbs. I find that argument to be an insidious one. As I stated at the HAIF happy hour the other night, I am actually a proponent of good mass transit. I used to office in front of the Preston Station downtown. I used to take the 70 Memorial to work. However, this belief by some that government should be more authoritarian and force people into apartments and onto trains is a dangerous one, and the main reason that I have posted responses to this thread.

    The unconfirmed accusation that I've read is that Bob Lanier owns 1700 acres along the Grand Parkway route. So approximately 3 sq miles along the 180 sq mile route. That is clearly all of the land, and makes him exactly like Hitler. Just like the expansion of the interstate system into cities was exactly like the fire-bombing of Dresden. BTW, Rick frequently quotes the same source, DC Streets Blog, for his arguments. In this example, as in others, I generally can't find anyone else that confirms the accusation. Only a single blog which states its objective as reporting "on movements around the country to ditch the antiquated highway-centric model for a more sustainable transportation system." So yeah, it's basically like a conservative quoting "The Drudge Report" to support an argument. I know that I've clearly just identified myself as part of the 95% that isn't capable of thinking critically, by refusing to blindly accept single sourced accusations. I'm fine with that characterization.

    That's actually really bad wording. Art aficionados and downtown hipsters are way to aloof to go to a corporate sponsored event. It isn't "authentic" enough.

    Stopped by about 8 tonight to grab a few shots. They've been at it for about 20-22 hours now.. . i don't see how they're possibly going to be done by the end of the weekend.

    Here is also some shots from the newer Hotel. I've been inside alot of vacant buildings downtown and The Savoy Flats building is by far in the worst condition. Battlesteins is still in decent condition. I know the 1st floor and basement was being converted into a club but was never finished. The upper floors are still intact for the most part.     Here is some inside shots of the Savoy Flats building. Figured I'd share 'em now since it's soon to be gone forever !!! 1.     Was driving by and noticed it is deteriorating even more. The huge crack along the right bank of windows is getting larger and the bricks above the windows are falling out (and in a huge mass on the west-facing side) - apologies for the bad resolution:
