    I have been hoping for a Chick-Fil-A..so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. But we need a decent restaurant. The new bank is Wachovia. I like their building style, but we do not need ANOTHER bank in that block. Makes me think the banks making the BIG bucks these days. Next to Starbucks in Message Envy is going in...or at least their sign went in. With the current turn in economy I'm concerned about this shopping center. Tenants do not seem to be committing. The Starbucks does not seem to be busy enough. Even though I'm about to make a run for an Ice Tea myself. My latest gripe about Oak Forest is that TACKY TACKY Pawn Shop sign on Ella across from Shipley's. Did they really need the Huge sign? Why is it so low that it is All you see when you cross the RR Track. Seems like there should be some regulations on size and height of signs.

    I am thrilled they are finally painting it. I got a real laugh out of your "creepy" comment. But it is creepy in a good way. The house is so wonderful that it deserves to be saved. As I recall, the front porch is going to need some major rotten wood replaced.

    Hi everyone... I've been out of pocket again...but I heard the recent news about NW Mall...and thought I would drop by and see if anyone was talking about it.

    The Dutchman has been there forever. I'd say more neighborhood regulars there..but a pretty nice crowd. And like Musicman said...skater friendly... I went to a Halloween party there a few years ago that was really cool.... some art cars showed up. I've only been to the red one across the street once...seemed nice enough.. I think they sell hard liquor where the others are been and wine...and maybe set ups? I have not been to the one on the corner...old service station..then real estate office...but it sure looks nice and packs a crowd. Not sure if Jimmy's is still open (ice house)...but as I recall the crowd is a bit rougher there. It is nice to have these so close to home....walking distance...if you decide to indulge and cann't drive home. Oh..and welcome to the neighborhood... I live just across Ella in Oak Forest.

    Do not know if the place will still be vacant in October... word is that it was recently sold. Prisclynn hints that perhaps caretakers are living on the premises. Prisclynn...thanks so much for the pics. I would still like to see it in person... but if I do not get the chance...at least now we have a better ideal of the treasures inside.

    I tried to read though all the posts to be sure this was not mentioned before...but I'm running out of time this morning...so here goes. There was a restaurant on NW Freeway (290) near where Black Eye Pea is now days... It was a pretty nice place... had these HUGE paper mache animals. The food was pretty good. I remember my mom and I use to go often. This would be mid to late 70's. Anyone remember the name of this place?

    If the zoo was still free then most likely the animals would still be in those jail cell looking cages lke they were in the 60's and 70's. There have been millions and millions of dollars spent at the zoo to improve the enviornment and exhibition of the animals. It's another of those "you get what you pay for" situations. And if the City was paying millions and millions to renovate the zoo, then that money would not have been available for other city projects....that are needed. It does not bug me one bit to pay admission for the zoo. The animals do deserve top notch care and a top notch environment to live in. If the zoo took over the golf course and expanded...then admission would be $40 per day like San Diego.

    I have not seen any of these changes as I stay as far away from Northline Mall area as possible. As a child I was there almost every weekend because my mom loved Joske's (me too). But the crime in the area had gotten so bad, I just stayed away after Joske's left. Can anyone give an update on that subject? Has the crime in the area improved? To get a Walmart on this side town would be great. I live in Oak Forest which is not too far from Northline. The closest Walmart to me is at 290 and Hollister. This store has been being "remodeled" for over a year... and the place is a dump. I refuse to go to that location... instead... I drive over to the 1960 location (across from Kohls). The Walmart on Westheimer as been riddled with crime, so that location is out for me. And if Northline gets a Walmart, I would be worried about the same thing. I'm all for the open area concept. My favorite place to shop now is Meyeland Plaza. I would love for Northwest Mall to be knocked down and a copy of Meyerland to be put on this corner of the loop. If the crime in the Northline area has gotten better, then I'm all for these improvements.

    I lived in Tyler, 1980-1984, then went back in 1988 for 1 more year, before coming back home to Houston. Those pics of downtown is all there is. Yes, those are the only two towers. During the 80's there was a phase of bringing business back to downtown. I have a good friend open a bar (actually called it Westside - Like Dallas) which did well for a few years. There was a coffee house that had live entertainment on weekends and a few other shops...but I think that is all gone now. The happening side of Tyler is Southside, on Broadway at the Loop. No, this is NOT an interstate, just a road that goes all the way around town. South of the Loop on Broadway really grew during the 90's. They have most of the common restaurants nothing like that in the 80's. At the time, I thought Tyler would be a great place to raise a family, but the longer I stayed the more I realized how "clickish" it is. There is a lot of OLD money in Tyler and either you are "in the crowd" or not. I guess I is was "in" the first time I lived there (or at least on the edges of being in), but after I was gone for 4 years and came back, all of my friends had married and moved away. There are some very charming parts of town. Many still have brick streets. Beautiful Azalya District. Very nice Zoo.

    I remember! You could ordered a sundae that had 6 or 8 or 10 different kinds of ice cream (I thought it was scoops) for parties. This was the first time I saw wait staff run around the restaurant singing happy birthday and making a big deal to embarrass you. There was one in NW Mall for a while as well. Good times!

    Not to re-direct the topic...but Wayne Henley hung out at Oak Forest Park during the summer. I was much younger than him, but remember him in the "Park House" that use to be in the park. Him and some other "thugs" would run us kids out. First time I ever smelled pot. A friend of mine lost his brother during that time. They lived in the Heights. His father spent every weekend searching beaches with his shovel trying to find his son. I think it was Henley that said he was buried there. I don't think he was ever found. It was called the Houston Mass Murders. I read the book probably 20 years ago. Very scary stuff, especially when you know it was going down in your own back yard. In the early 70's there was a bad guy referred to as the "Purple People Eater". He attacked girs in purple clothes...anyone remember that?

    Did you have some business dealings with the man? Since we never know who reads these posts, I am going to be careful about what I say. I have not personally had business dealings with him, but I worked for a long time with a firm that did/does. This is why I have NO respect for the man.

    I remember eating Pizza was at this restaurant. I was maybe 10 yrs old. I was staying at the Shamrock for a dance convention and specifically remember walking across the street to this restaurant (about 12 of us) to eat Pizza. Wow..what a memory trigger.
