NCI study has awkward results

just a little article on teen smoking and how a study by the National Cancer Institute found increases despite (tobacco company funded) anti-smoking advertisements...

The study funded by the National Cancer Institute indicates the ads actually have a boomerang effect.

"Students with higher exposure to these parent targeted ads in fact had more positive perceptions about smoking," said lead researcher Melanie Wakefield.

Teens who watch these ads are more likely to approve of smoking, are more likely to pick up the habit.

The fact that teens are influenced by what they see shouldn't be surprising. According to another study 52 percent of teens with nonsmoking parents began lighting up because of exposure to smoking in movies.
