This came up in a recent thread. Houston has 2 Chinatowns. The one Downtown ,and the one on Westside which we actually use. Houston's grown and spread out so we've gone through one Chinatown and built another one. Houston's the only city with 2 Chinatowns.

We've also got 2 Littel Saigons. One that's part of Midtown and the other on Westside.Well it's time we did something with the current Chinatown. The one Downtown, it old,ran down, and underused. It nad the close

by werehouse district could be used for something. Shopping, entertainment, resteraunts, festivals, even nigthclubs.Starting with the idea of Dallas's West ENd but this one would be alot bigger. It could be Houston's cultural center ar atleastt Downtown's. With the abundance of asian stuff there all we need to do as add indians and some mexicans and it will be almost complete.

This would be more of the idea of The Hardy Railyard project. Infact it should be built there instead of North of Downtown. It would be better as the central sqaure of Houston than The Railyard cause it would be more close to central Downtown. Then the buses and trains would have to go so far when The Grand Central Hub gets buit there. We could close it off at nites or weekends and even have largescale events and festivals there. Only bad part is you won't be able to see the pretty view of DOwntown from The West Side.

Two questions...

One, why build something "close" to downtown, when we are already building something IN downtown (see Downtown Park and Houston Pavillions threads).

Two, why model an entertainment district after one that dies within 5 YEARS? Dallas West End opened in late 1986. By the end of 1991, it was a ghost town. Only a few tourists went there, and they had to deal with auto burglars and armed robbers. Now, even Dallas Alley itself, the heart of West End, has closed. Doesn't sound like something Houston should copy.

Didn't the construction of the additional asian oriented business and malls start sucking business out of old china town?

Old Chinatown was rather blah even before GRB, no new building or anything that would appeal to tourists.

I went to a couple of resturants, but other than that (and asian porn) there was really no compelling reason for me to stay there.
