RESOURCES BEING POSITIONED FOR

SEVERE REGIONAL WEATHER EVENT

LOCAL PREPARATIONS

. The Harris County Emergency Operations Center is activated and staffed until the threat is diminished.

. All Harris County and City of Houston departments are taking appropriate precautions and steps to prepare for potential hazardous weather.

. Harris County Sheriffs Office's Marine Division has staged its boats for immediate use.

. Harris County Fire Marshal's Office is coordinating the staging of rescue boats in unincorporated portions of Harris County.

STATE RESOURCES EN-ROUTE

State resources destined for Houston are scheduled to arrive and be ready for deployment no later than 6:00 A.M. Resources include the following:

. 50 large Texas Army National Guard trucks with crews, at the National Guard Armory, at Westheimer and Highway 6;

. Two HH-60 helicopters with flight crews, at Ellington Field;

. Two CH-47 heavy lift helicopters with flight crews, stationed in Grand Prairie, TX;

. 2 Blackhawk SAR helicopters, stationed at Ellington Field;

. 30 Parks and Wildlife rescue boats, at the Department of Public Safety (DPS) facility on West Rd.;

. One large airboat from the General Land Office (GLO) in LaPorte;

. Seven swift water rescue teams from Texas Task Force One (TTF-1), at Bryan, TX;

. One TTF-1 joint air and ground coordination team, at the DPS facility;

. The 6th Army National Guard civil support team, at the National Guard Armory;

. One HazMat strike team from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and GLO, at the DPS facility;

. Incident management team en route to DPS Region 2A; and

. A satellite communications package system that enables responders to coordinate from wherever they are operating;

KEY PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGES

TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN. If you can't see the pavement through the water, don't drive or walk through the area.

If you are stalled on a freeway within the city limits, call SAFEClear - 713-843-5488 or 713-843-5489. SAFEClear operates 24 hours/day, seven days/week.

If you are stalled on any Harris County freeway, call the Motorist Assistance Program, or MAP -- 713-225-5627. MAP operates Monday-Friday, from 6 A.M. - 10 P.M.

If you are stalled on the Hardy/N. Sam Houston toll road, call 281-442-9702.

If you are stalled on W. Sam Houston toll road, call 281-463-6666.

If you cannot get through to any of these phone numbers, call the Harris County Sheriff's Office and they will direct your call. 713-221-6000.

Homeless persons or those with housing needs should seek shelter as soon as possible.

Star of Hope declares they have room for more

The Star of Hope Men's Development Center (1811 Ruiz) and the Women and Family Emergency Shelter (419 Dowling) are near capacity but will provide a warm meal and shelter during this time of increased need.

SEVERE REGIONAL WEATHER EVENT

EVENT OVERVIEW

Light thunderstorms occurred throughout Harris County, with two inches of rain affecting portions of northwest of the county. Area bayous continue to subside.

IMPACT

Hartman Middle Schools is closed. All other H.I.S.D. summer school students are required to report to class.

Road closures will be announced regularly or citizens can visit www.houstontranstar.org

FORECAST

Today: Periods of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 7am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 87. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming east. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 75. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

PREPAREDNESS

EVENT OVERVIEW

Harris County remains the regional staging area for state assets deployed in response to recent severe weather events. They will remain in the region until the threat is no longer present.

Area bayous are within their banks and local emergency management officials will continue to monitor the situation.

IMPACT

FORECAST

Today: Periods of showers and thunderstorms, with the potential of storms to produce heavy rain in the amounts of up to 3" of rain in isolated areas. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 75. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

The 10" that some areas received in a span of less than eight hours is no small rain event. No coincidence that it was in those areas where flooding mostly took place.

That said, I agree that I would like to see all areas within the city limits equipped with the drainage system to better handle these types of storms. Granted, some storms are too severe for such infrastructure to ever be full proof but the affects of many others could be better withstood.
