Nine local physicians and a retired major league baseball player recently broke ground on a 15-acre sports complex in South County that will cater to youth, high school, collegiate and professional athletes.

Legends Sports Complex at 602 Pruitt Road in Spring has been 18 months in the making.

A family-oriented facility, owners Dr. Rick Mora of The Woodlands and Chad Fox, former professional baseball player, designed the complex with the help of consultants after researching centers in Texas and nationwide.

Initially planned as a 30,000- to 50,000-square-foot baseball academy, Mora said he wanted to focus on adding amenities other Houston facilities lacked, such as adequate seating and food. After visiting Champion Sports Center in Orlando, Fla., a fully equipped sports facility providing an in-house restaurant, professional coaches and training for volleyball, basketball, baseball, football and other sports, "We walked out of there saying, 'We can do more than just a baseball academy,' " Mora said. ''We found the demographics and need in the community that could sustain a facility here in The Woodlands."

The 96,000-square-foot Legends Sports Complex will feature multiple indoor and outdoor fields for baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer. Four full size basketball courts and eight volleyball courts. There will be an indoor turf field for football and other sports, plus an outdoor track. Six automated batting cages and 12 pitching and batting tunnels are included in the facility design.
