Subdude
April 17, 2006, 6:33AMAIA DESIGN AWARDS An architectural gem on a shoestring budget Agency used community ideas in housing design By CLIFFORD PUGH Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Building affordable, attractive housing in Houston is always a challenge. With an oddly shaped piece of East End property, initial neighborhood resistance and a shoestring budget, developers of the Canal Street Apartments had more than the usual obstacles to contend with. But the complex, which provides subsidized housing to Houstonians who live alone on a limited income, has become a neighborhood jewel. The apartments at 2821 Canal St. (a block from the original Ninfa's on Navigation) are so architecturally interesting that the project recently won a top design award from the Houston chapter of the American Institute of Architects. A national jury singled it out, along with six other Houston-area projects, from 113 entries. Other winners range from a Bellaire medical center to jazzy cornerstones at each edge of Jones Plaza in downtown Houston. Eight other projects, including Reliant Stadium and a Houston Independent School District prekindergarten center, received special-merit honors.
