Guest waynelorentz
The October Houston Heights Restoration/Historical Committee Meeting will be on October 21st at 7:30 PM at 803 Heights Blvd. This is the location of the original 1910s grocery store with residence above and the Texaco station dating back to the 1930s. The grocery was a bakery in the early years and later became a school and church fixtures shop. The Heights Service Station was a Texaco station and had a back room with many stories to tell. In the 1970s Elsa and John Sebastian owned the property and the residence over the store is where Elsa passed away. In 1991 the property was purchased by James Weaver and Shirley Scardino along with son Ben Weaver. Son Ben now runs the garden furniture and accessories area on the corner. During the renovation of the old solid brick building many problems were overcome and historic details were discovered. This meeting will be of special interest to those in the neighborhood who remember the many activities occupying the property. Much Heights History is located at the site and it is hoped that those in the neighborhood attend to tell their remembrances of the buildings and the occupants over the years. From the specialized antiques including religious relics, construction items for restoration to the nostalgic garden items every corner of these businesses offers much to see. The Houston Heights Restoration/Historical Committee does not require membership in the Houston Heights Association and all monthly meetings are open to the public to learn about history and restoration in keeping with the neighborhood.
