DJ V Lawrence
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/world/3622298.htmlLuckily this one had a happy ending.I'm blown away. I honestly can't recall ever hearing about a mining accident in North America since I've been alive before this year. Now here we are...STILL in January 2006, and there have now been THREE mining accidents of some kind in the US and Canada. In this story linked above, 72 miners were rescued in Canada. We all are aware of the two separate instances in West Virginia; the first killing 13 and leaving one recovering from a coma. The second at a different site less than two weeks later that killed two.Is this all coincidence, or is this, like, common safety negligence from the owners of the corporations that run the mines? And prior to 2006, can anyone recall hearing a mining accident occuring in their lifetime on the news?Just curious... gto250us
It all depends on where you live. In the northeast, where most underground mines are located you hear about it often. Althought not as much as you used to. Back in the 50-60's there were mine accidents all of the time. Once one happens you hear more about them in the news.Coal mine fatalities1993 - 471994 - 451995 - 471996 - 391997 - 301998 - 291999 - 352000 - 382001 - 422002 - 272003 - 302004 - 282005 - 222006 - 15 so far1900 - 14891910 - 28211920 - 22721930 - 20631940 - 13881950 - 6431960 - 3251970 - 2601980 - 1331990 - 662000 -
Jeebus
I don't think there are more accidents, only more coverage. Edited January 31, 2006 by Jeebus
