Oct. 5, 2016 Join us at the Heritage Society, Wednesday, October 5 at 7 PM for a special lecture by Randy Tibbits, one of the guest curators of the current exhibit: "This WAS Contemporary Art: Fine and Decorative Arts in Houston 1945-1965". The talk, "The Houston Art Scene in Transition & Disruption: Frank Freed's Opening Night - Contemporary Arts Museum of 1953 and What it Shows Us", will explore how World War II disrupted and influenced Houston's art culture. Admission: $5 general; free for Heritage Society members. The Exhibition gallery will be open 10 AM - 9 PM on Wednesday and co-curators available for evening tours. The exhibit closes on Saturday, October 15, 2016. University of Houston Art & Architecture Tour - Sat. Oct. 8 As part of Docomomo US National Tour Day, the AIA Houston and Houston Mod have partnered to host a walking tour exploring the art, architecture and campus design at the University of Houston on Saturday, October 8 at 10 AM. Cost: $5 for AIA Houston and Houston Mod members; $10 General Admission. Reservations are recommended. Tour sites include the Fine Arts Building, 1972, CRSS; Cullen College of Engineering, 1967, Golemon and Rolfe; A.D. Bruce Religion Center, 1965, Frank C. Dill; and the Ezekiel W. Cullen Building, 1950, Alfred C. Finn (pictured). Further tour information is available on the Houston Mod Facebook page. Houston: Uncommon Modern Receives National Award On September 22, 2016, Delaney Harris-Finch (Houston Mod board member) and Anna Mod (Houston Mod co-founder and Master Mod) traveled to New York City to accept a Modernism in America Award from Docomomo US. The Survey/Inventory Citation of Merit was presented by the Docomomo US Board Vice President, Robert Meckfessel of Dallas, Texas. The Houston: Uncommon Modern project along with 9 other exemplary projects that raise awareness of the importance of architecture and design of postwar society in the United States were honored. Houston To Host Nation's Preservationists - Nov. 15-18 The National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual conference, Past Forward, will be held in Houston, November 15-18, 2016. Attendees will explore how preservation can play a greater role in securing healthier, more sustainable and just cities through educational programming, field studies, and special events throughout the city.
