Former Bryan Air Force Base to be transformed into multimillion-dollar research hub and education center over next few years (May 2, 2016)

Quote

Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp announced this morning that the Riverside campus soon will be transformed into a multi-million technology and testing research hub, while a unique educational center will be built along side it.

The 1,900-acre campus adjacent to Texas 47 and Texas 21 —  land developed in 1942 for the Bryan Army Air Base and acquired by Texas A&M 20 years later — already is home to the Texas Transportation Institute and Texas A&M Engineer

Making progress for future RELLIS campus

Quote

Officials are preparing to begin several new construction projects at the 2,000-acre site. A&M System officials said many of structures targeted for demolition on the 2,000-acre campus are "decaying warehouses" that will be replaced with academic and research and development facilities over the next few years. Not all of the older structures on the campus are set to be torn down, however. Officials said facilities such as the chapel, flight tower, hangers and water tower that remain from the campus' days as the former Bryan Air Base will be preserved.

Blinn College, Texas A&M celebrate RELLIS Campus groundbreaking

Quote

In May 2016, Chancellor Sharp announced plans to create a new research and development campus to help companies move ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace, while also offering a new path toward a college degree. One aspect of the RELLIS Campus plan involves the development of a multi-institutional Gateway Education Center that will provide space for Texas A&M System member institutions and Blinn to offer a variety of curricula.

“This relationship between The Texas A&M University System and Blinn College is literally the envy of community colleges and universities all over the United States of America,” Sharp said. “This is how you make sure that students take courses that transfer – you talk to each other, and that is what these two institutions have been doing for 30 or 40 years.”

I figured the Aggies on here may be interested in hearing about what's going on at the RELLIS campus, one of the Texas A&M University System's most exciting current projects. The RELLIS Campus is the redeveloped Riverside Campus (before that it was the Research Annex and before that it was the Bryan Army Airfield). Today, it is home to a growing number of state research, training, and response agencies, research centers, and educational buildings. The innovative aspect of the education portion of it is that it is essentially a multi-institutional university. The first two years of classes are taken at Blinn with the degree-specific classes being taken at a university with a presence on the campus. Currently, every university in the A&M System except for A&M-College Station offers degrees at the RELLIS Campus. SFA also offers degrees there.

A few new projects for the RELLIS Campus will be approved by the regents next week!

1.) Runway 35R Rehab - $5,372,000

2.) Industrial Distribution Building No. 1 - $20,020,000

  • As recently as a few years ago there were plans for a second Industrial Distribution Building, the naming convention makes me think this is still the current plan.

3.) Texas Division of Emergency Management Warehouse and Regional Operations Center at RELLIS - $29,350,000

The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved the creation of the Texas A&M Semiconductor Institute this month. Of note is the $144 million in proposed facilities for semiconductor research (capturing grant funding allocated by the US CHIPS Act from last year) and secure semiconductor manufacturing for defense applications that would be built at the RELLIS Campus. Governor Abbott asked the system to lead the state's efforts for two of three major initiatives that align with national goals: the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) and Manufacturing USA Institutes (MUSAI). The System expects $200 million in startup funds will be provided by the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund, which has passed the Texas Legislature and been sent to Governor Abbott's desk in the form of the Texas CHIPS Act, HB 5174. This is priority legislation for Abbott so it is expected he will sign it. This would be game changing for Texas A&M, the Brazos Valley community, and potentially Texas as a whole.

The money for this has been included in the supplemental appropriations bill, SB 30.

RELLIS Campus Data Center should (finally) begin construction next year. Although the mayor of Bryan on a radio interview recently said it had already started.

The Quantum and Artificial Intelligence Chip facility is on the capital plan for $100 million dollars. Not sure where on the campus it will be located.

Additionally, $30 million were appropriated by the legislature for a hypersonic wind tunnel.

Blinn's second building at RELLIS is now open.

The RELLIS Campus will be the new home of the Meat Sciences & Technology Center, which will be moving from West Campus (Kleberg, I believe). The second picture is of a transportation lab on the campus.
