Advice On Moving

Hi All,

I will be relocation from Houston to China in about 2 months. As such everything must go (furniture, piano, house, car, etc.)

I know it's probably not okay to splash my advertisement here so instead I thought I'd ask if anyone knows any good free online listings for this kind of thing (specifically the furniture part)?

So far, I've found houston.craigslist.org and houston.backpage.com.

Also, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on selling my home or advice in general. Much thanks!

You know, truthfully Craigslist is most likely to be your best bet. I suppose you can always take whatever you don't sell there to an "I Sold It on eBay" store. And there's always the ever-prosperous Garage Sale. Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of "free" places to list.

There's a thread with lots of good information on preparing and displaying your house once it's on the market. That's here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...wtopic=2972&hl=

Good luck with your move to China - that's a big jump.

When my wife and I moved from San Diego to Houston last August, we sold pretty much every piece of furniture we had through Craislist. We got good money for what we were selling, had lots of inquiries, and eveything went pretty quick. Highly recommended. Just be prepared for lots of emails (and I mean LOTS) that end up leading nowhere.

i live near chinatown near bellaire and dairy ashford in a house that's about a year old. it's basically a 2200 sqft patio home with a small backyard in a small gated community.

My advice:

Get a GOOD realtor. One who knows your area. And does good volume in general. And who is experienced. And who has a reputation for being ethical and acting in the customer's best long-term interest. Don't just get any realtor. And don't think all realtors are the same. And when you get one, listen to him or her, and do what he or she says.

Even though it's only 1 year old, make sure it's in perfect condition. We built a home, lived in it only 3 years, moved out, repainted and recarpeted everything...and it STILL suffered an inspection where all kinds of problems were found. Make sure everything is fixed, check everything, and have professionals do the checking. Don't leave it until the buyer inspects it, because then you're up against time and money. Find all problems and fix them now.

Re-decorate and re-design the place so it will sell, with as much time, money, and insight as you can garner. Then get feedback on how your house looks from as many people as possible.

Make sure you price it right. Spare no time in carefully estimating how much it should sell for and how long it will take to sell.

Basically, do as much homework as you can possibly do. The more you do, the better you'll fare.

When my wife moved in with me we had to get rid of a lot of surplus furniture. I called Goodwill and they sent out a truck a couple of days later. They took the stuff and I got a nice tax writeoff.

Strangely, though, they won't take bicycles. Go figure.

Of course, if you don't want to/you're too busy for a realtor, there's always ForSaleByOwner.com. If you list here, or with a realtor, my advice would also to be take lots of pictures and throw 'em up on a Geocities website. Nice detailed shots with a floorplan or a virtual tour, if you want to go all out.

You're right. Craigslist is crazy. A bunch of my stuff is already gone. Here's a link to the listing for anyone interested :
