GerryM Posted May 25, 2011 Share Posted May 25, 2011 InnerLooped posted a link to a fascinating proposal that would connect a five-block span of Midtown and the Third Ward (including connections between existing green spaces at Elizabeth Baldwin Park and Emancipation Park) via a massive sustainable pedestrian parkway built over 59/288. The main roads in the area would also be changed to "complete streets" with bike lanes and improved pedestrian areas. Hard to imagine that such a thing would ever be built, but it is definitely a new way of looking at the dead zone that is the freeway... For example, some of the freeway overpasses (like Elgin) could be planted with shade trees and the street as a whole could be turned into a complete street as shown in the concept. Highway6 Posted May 26, 2011 Share Posted May 26, 2011 It's hard to take this seriously when it looks like no regard was given for existing streets and buildings.Rosalie St has apparently been greened over .. with one of their squiggly buildings actually in the street. But i guess Rosalie access won't matter anymore since they've determined my buddies town home complex wasn't worth keeping.Props for the beautiful renderings though. Its hard to support a concept that's so obviously still in the preliminary thought process stages. These are good starting points and concepts for conversation with public officials and should be posted on the planners office wall for inspiration but in no means should be distributed to the public. More time was spent on the artistic rendering than thinking about the circulation potentials for both vehicular and/or pedestrian use in the area. Are we talking trails, sidewalks, bus stops? Would this create a scene similar to McGowen where there is a constant transient issue of people constantly walking back and forth. Not to mention the lack of an existing land use analysis. Sorry for the negativity its just been one of those days.
