Abandoned subway systems

Recommended Posts

One of the blogs that I follow is called Strange Maps. Recently it posted an article about the Rochester, New York subway system. I was surprised to see it because I thought Buffalo was the only city outside of New York inside New York with a subway system.

It turns out that Rochester's subway was abandoned in 1956.

That reminded me of Cincinnati. When I lived there I learned about and saw pictures of that city's former subway system, which was also abandoned. There are tunnels beneath the city's streets that still have stations and even a subway train down in the dusty depths.

So, now I'm wondering -- has anyone else heard of any other cities that completely gave up on their subway systems? I thought Cincinnati was a one-off, but if it happened in Rochester, too, maybe it happened elsewhere.
