London, 2006

Today I'm working with some pictures I took in London last October, and thought I'd post some here for the group to see.

Palace_of_Westminster_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_002a.jpg

Parliament.

Queen_Mary_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

A ship in the Thames named Queen Mary.

The Royal Stock Exchange.

Saint_Martin-in-the-Fields_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

Saint Martin-in-the-Fields (great gift shop in the basement).

Savannah_House_-_11-12_Charles_II_Street_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

Random building.

Shell-Mex_House_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

The famous Shell-Mex House. We need more buildings with clocks.

Swiss_Centre_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

The Swiss embassy.

Tate_Britain_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_003a.jpg

The Tate Museum.

Tattershall_Castle_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

A ship in the Thames converted to a bar. It's called Tattershall Castle.

The_London_Eye_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

The London Eye

Tower_42_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

Tower 42. I think this was London's first skyscraper.

Vauxhall_Bridge_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

Vauxhall Bridge. Can't see it without thinking about Morrissey.

Vauxhall_Bus_Station_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

Bus station in Vauxhall.

Vauxhall_Cross_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

I thought this was just a random office building. Then I found out it's Vauxhall Cross -- the headquarters for MI6. The pretty green glass withstood an almost point-blank rocket attack a back in the 90's.

Victoria_Tower_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

Victoria Tower -- the one on the south end of Parliament. My favorite.

Waterloo International Station, where the Eurostar trains come in (that's how I got there).

Willis_Building_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

The Willis Building, under construction, curves around the Lloyds of London Building. I think it's done by now.

Hamilton_House_-_Saint_George_Wharf_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_001a.jpg

Apartment buildings at Saint George Wharf.

Hippodrome_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_002a.jpg

A club called the Hippodrome.

Hungerford_Bridge_-_London,_England_-_October,_2006_-_002a.jpg

Hungerford Bridge. The cable-stay beidgelets flanking it are new. They hold up the pedestrian spans since there wasn't room for people on the main span.

Excellent!

I used to work in the Shell-Mex building. Although we always just called it 80 Strand.

The floors sound like a 1980 data center. I have some cool pics I need to post of the lighted entry bricks. I'd love to do that with my patio. Each brick had a light source.

Neat. I'd love to see them.

I've promised myself that some day I'm going to spend a month or two in England visiting all of the art deco/moderne buildings featured in the Poirot TV series. I've accidentally been to two, but when I do it on purpose, Shell-Mex is my first stop.
