Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau hosts travel writers and convention planners in New York

Inside Houston's homey Breakfast Klub, owner Marcus Davis was gloating.

After vanquishing a customer in a game of dominos, he likened his sudden victory to a walk-off home run.

Two days later, that folksy charm would be put to the service of Houston's tourism industry at the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau's annual reception here in New York for convention planners and travel writers.

Davis and his signature wings and waffles got star billing in the city's attempt to draw more tourist business to Houston.

The bureau could have highlighted NASA, the museum or theater district, but it took things down to a human scale to give the city a personality, said Lindsey Brown, the bureau's director of marketing.
