  1. ah, Texas Tapes and Records.... Many days of my misspent youth were wasted there, waiting in line for band autograph sessions.

I can remember walking through the doors of that place as late as '86, when I decided that driving from Alief to Pasadena was a total waste of time, money, gas, life, etc just to buy a record that I could get for the same money at Cactus in Sharpstown (another store I miss!)

  2. The Halloweens my friends and I spent in Montrose in the early 80's were the best ever!!!

I worked for an audio company in the mid 80's... We did two places in Montrose- lights and sound in a lesbian bar called Crystal's (I remember it being north of Westheimer, maybe off of Fairview, but, the memory is fuzzy), and we put a sound system in a place on Lovett called Rooster's, which became Mothers.

I used to have a bad-assed cigarette lighter- it was waterproof, you wore it as a pendant around your neck. After we finished a service call at Rooster's, About halfway home, I realized I left my lighter at Rooster's... My boss was like, "forget about it, man, it's gone, we aren't going back there unless we're being paid"... lol

(and you audiophiles would FREAK OUT if you ever saw what is driving the sound system at Numbers.....)

  3. i'm not sure of the access to the following buildings, but, some of my favorites are (in no particular order)

    1) Heritage Plaza

    2) Bank OF America Building, though it may be hard to show the enormity of the lobby in close-up pictures

    3) Pennzoil Place

    4) the lobby at Moores Opera House at UH

    5) Wortham Center's lobby (Hobby's lobby... heh heh heh heh... is too utilitarian)

  4. Conti 'borrowed' the Persia jingle in the 70's... I remember those commercials from watching Houston Wrestling (another sponsor... llama Mr Norman!)

The Chequer import place sold Lancias and TVR... One marque was Italian, the other British, both came pre-rusted for your convenience!

A Lancia fan buddy of mine wants the Lancia signs if the ever come down, but, Ike damaged both of them...

  5. one of the main reasons why Stafford has a high commercial to residential ratio is because of their school district. I'm not saying it's a baddistrict, but, when they split off from Ft Bend ISD, which was one of the highest ranked districts in the state at the time, they screwed themselves.

There was a lot of residential areas planned for Stafford- the developers pulled out, and it took years before they finally built commercial property there. Meanwhile, areas around Stafford exploded in side and population- Missouri City, Sugar Land, even The Meadows grew by 30%

  6. Chris Baker is a fair weather conservative, ie, he was middle of the road until someone told him that people to the left of that leftist Dubya Boosh don't make money in radio.

He's also not even in Houston, he's based in Minnesota, does his 'local' show via an ISDN line (same with Joe Pags- he's from San Antonio)

The 950 also dropped Fred Thompson at 10pm, which was an alternative to replays of Coast to Coast on 740.
