  1. sounds simple but in reality there are just too many ifs particularly with someone as focused as Cho.

    He already gave a demonstration of what he would have done if the door had not opened. He tried to get through, but after moments of failing, he gave up and left. I forget exactly how that room was barricaded.

  2. and if he was in the room and locked it, it would prevent authorities from coming in for a rescue. plus remember the doors usually have windows which can be shot through as well. i'm not sure this would have prevented a thing.

    That could have been possible, though by the time Cho entered the rooms, he blocked doorways to prevent escape and fired at will.

    The rooms in Norris Hall did not have windows facing the hallway, nor did they have peepholes. The people inside could not track Cho's movements.

    Also, normal school lockdown procedures consist of locking rooms and taking cover.

    Unless Cho is already inside a room, he would be unable to access any of the rooms if steel doors were installed and lockdown procedures were followed.

    I believe the time when a steel door could be a liability would be in the even of a bad guy holding a room hostage.

  3. where specifically are you requiring these doors?

    Classroom doors - The problem with Norris Hall was that the doors were made of wood and some did not lock. The ill-fated French class placed a table against the door, and that did not stop Cho from entering the room.

  4. I want to ensure that all Houston-area schools (from primary all the way to university) place these measures to prevent any Chos or any other disasters:

    * All doors must be of steel and must have locking mechanisms

    * All campuses and buildings must bear live security cameras that are monitored by various groups of people

    * Police should be stationed in each building - I would have one officer per 200-400 students.

  5. I can't believe how the media is running his sick pictures and videos almost continuously. The killer, name left out on purpose, should be never mentioned by name. He wanted to become famous with those videos. I refuse to give him that glory. The victims were not allowed to make videos to say good bye before they were executed in cold blood.

    Let's remember the victims not the monster.

    I have another idea - Why not try to post-posthumously embarrass the monster?

    Dig up any dirt on him and make fun of it. People are already calling the killer stupid (as his plays were poorly-written). We should "bully" him and in the end call him a "worthless blathering monster" that would have never succeeded in life. Also label him a coward and therefore give him a dishonorable "funeral" that will have no sadness and no pity for the killer.

  6. We should desecrate Cho's body as a response to his cowardly gesture (the video).

    Cho should be "laid to rest" in a humiliating and dishonorable manner. Cho, a coward, a thief, and a murderer, does not deserve a funeral, nor does he deserve a proper burial, nor does he deserve freedom from humiliation.

  7. North Forest ISD is in trouble and it was also in trouble back in the 80's. However, why burden HISD with these problems. Let it stay out there by itself.

    Plumber:

    1. I feel that the boundaries and demographics of NFISD inherently hurt chances of the district performing: The boundaries contain very few major businesses (and therefore tax base) and scores of disadvantaged people - Public school systems work best by combining rich, middle class, and poor people (I.E. HISD) so that all citizens get basic support.

    2. HISD, the largest school district in the state of TX, can most easily absorb NFISD.

    3. NFISD is bleeding students, so NFISD would be an increasingly lesser burden

    4. Most of NFISD is in the city of Houston, and I believe that all Houstonians should be in one school district

  8. What's sad is that driving out in the suburbs you can instantly tell which ones are lost causes from day one.

    Jeebus, do you care to name any names? I would love to know examples of suburbs that have a high chance of souring! :)

    By the way, I wrote a small, not-very-good (And I mean that!) play about a teenage boy driving to Sharpstown to meet his friend - the problem is that the kid drives a Mercedes and wears flashy clothing. On top of that, he stops at a McDonald's near the apartment. When the boy goes back to his car, a group of three thugs force the kid to give up the car keys, cell phone, wallet, and sweatshirt.

    The boy finally meets his friend at the Sharpstown apartment, but without a car and therefore without a way to fulfill a planned date with his girlfriend.

  9. As for secondary schools:

    My sister attended Lamar from Fall 2001 through Spring 2005 and graduated with an IB Diploma- Obviously she performed at Lamar.

    But I attend a different school because I want a smaller environment that does not resemble the typical large American high school. I will graduate from that school in May 2007.

    My parents knew that their son and their daughter had different needs and desires, so therefore we attended different high schools.

    Schools can differ in many ways, including:

    * Dress code

    * General atmosphere

    * Type of curriculum

    * Overall school size

    * Average class size

    The moral of the story here is that school districts should (and do) offer a variety of choices of schools to parents. This is also part of the reason why I want the district boundaries of HISD to change so that all of the city of Houston as well as the "island cities" are within the same school district.

  10. A&M and UT have affiliate campuses too - but they are all over the state of TX.

    Now, UH Downtown takes undergrads but has no dormitory seats - it is a 100% commuter school. Clear Lake and Victoria are post-graduate facilities. Sugar Land and Cinco Ranch are satellite campuses for post-graduate classes.

    What UH wants to become is a highly-residential undergraduate school. All of the satellite campuses handle graduate and post-associate degree students.

    My thing is UH is actively trying to be A&M or UT and it won't happen.....you already have UH Clear Lake, Victoria, Downtown, Sugar Land, what else is needed?

    UH Downtown was probably the biggest hit to Texas Southern....PV doesn't need that hit...Cy-Fair College and North Harris have hurt the first-year freshman enrollment numbers so the big task now is to pick those freshmen back up 2 years later

    A UH campus would cause a big impact....

  11. Check out the Snopes article here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/holocaust.asp

    It's not just from the DAILY MAIL, hello? :rolleyes: It was on CNN, FoxNews, and BBC News. Are they all full of it too? :lol: Your link is from the Historical Society on how to DEAL with teaching these subjects (and all 48 pages of it, ugh!). It's pretty well known by now that there are schools that are dropping these subjects, period. You can't deny that. The topic isn't "UK Schools MAY drop" it is that they HAVE. Even your study claims one Northern UK school dropped it.

    The bottom line is that ALL history needs to be taught, good or bad, pretty and ugly. Do you at least agree with that, westguy?

  12. What's funny is Freedom of Speech was created for people like Imus and Savage.

    Freedom of Speech was not created for the vanilla-news-freaks you see in the mainstream media like the plagiarism scandal at CBS that nobody hears about. http://www.slate.com/id/2164070/?nav=fix

    And based upon that logic, long live the rappers! Tell us how you really feel for not knowing your daddy, baby!

    Freedom of Speech technically only applies to the government. MSNBC is a private organization.

  13. The US government is never going to deport the 12-20 million illegals that reside in this country so you might as well forget about that. More people vote on a show about karaoke singers than the presidential elections.

    After all, American Idol gets a lot of underage kids. Also, I believe people may vote more than once. Am I correct?

  14. It's too easy to buy all that land, divide it into smaller pieces and sucker someone into paying more for their postage stamp that lacks adequate roads and emergency services. Developers must be the richest people in the state, which is why this cycle will continue.

    Fulshear is an incorporated town, so it has SOME municipal services... unlike Fresno, TX.

  15. aldine isd magnets are not that different. I taught in one and 40% of the kids were in a TAKS class.

    My idea of an Aldine magnet (in Houston ISD) would work like this:

    Aviation Sciences and Airline and Aviation Careers at Aldine High School

    * Flight training (This is done at HISD's Sterling - but I have more)

    * Route planning and airline management

    * Air traffic control operations

    * International relations

    It would mostly aim for the following groups due to proximity:

    * Aldine & Greenspoint (mostly Hispanic)

    * Northline Mall area (mostly Hispanic)

    * Kingwood (mostly White)

    * Summerwood (somewhat White)

    * North Forest area (African-American)

    * Inwood Forest/Acres Homes area (African-American)

    And, yes, I would include plenty of field trips to the airport :)

  16. It'll be interesting to see what Spring ISD decides to do.

    I grew up in the area and I support any neighborhood that decides its no longer wants to be part of that once great district. Who could blame them for wanting to leave? This was a really nice area 15 years ago. Still would be if the Northside of FM 1960 were in Klein ISD.

    What you're seeing here is a microsphere of what will happen to America in the coming decades. The implications are tremendous.

    ABC 13 is telling me that Spring ISD shot down the move unanimously.

  17. Assuming PasadenaTexan lives in Pasadena, I can empathize with his concerns. Those critics on this forum don't have to see it day in and day out, so cut the guy some slack. The place is dumpy in many areas and is resembling Mexico and I'm sure the schools all have bilinqual ed., hospitals are full of no-pays, etc. Immigration is one thing but never in the history of this country have millions upon millions come over illegally and caused such widespread changes in language and appearance. I don't think he's trying to necessarily stir trouble but has a legitimate concern, agree with him or not, and I haven't heard many logical explanations as to why he should adjust his view, just the usual charges of "racist" and "the irony" that always cloud discussion when no one has anything constructive to say.

    Only the elementary schools offer bilingual education. Middle and high school students must use ESL.

    If you wish to look at Greatschools profiles of Pasadena ISD schools (PISD covers most of Pasadena), see: http://www.greatschools.net/schools.page?d...79&state=TX
