  1. http://www.emirates.com/english/destinatio...er_houston.aspx

Emirates Airlines (EK), flying to Houston from December of this year nonstop to Dubai, listed some attractions and places to eat.

The airline lists the following as attractions:

"* Head for the Theater District to enjoy the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Ballet, the Houston Symphony Orchestra and The Alley Theater.

*Whether you love arts or science, you

  2. Now HISD is bragging how the passed bond will allow them to fence off the school, along with others. Can you imagine that they will have to fence a school off in River Oaks?

River Oaks ES was fenced some time ago... I remember when it wasn't fenced.

EDIT: Isaiah Carey made a blog about the Newton attack: http://carey2.blogspot.com/2007/11/should-...to-address.html

  3. Pearland at 100,000 and no one has even talked about it so no I don't have any idea when or if it will change. As clearman points out as long as the stores are near Pearland in Harris county no one seems to be to concerned. And since a lot if not most of the population of Brazoria county lives in the northern section around Pearland its not to big a concern. Added to that the southern parts of the county have muncipal laws that allow for liquor stores there and I don't see anything that will lead to a change.

Then would it become an issue once central and southern cities such as Angleton, Lake Jackson, and Freeport develop?

  4. By the way, regarding the overly-TAKS-ed culture of some public schools, I looked at the website of my alma mater, River Oaks ES.

Since it is an "IBO" school, it has to follow the standards of an organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Something tells me that a school that only hands TAKS work would not fit the standards of the IBO, so it appears that ROE did not decline. Also I notice that the Suzuki Violin position and five of the "enrichment" shifts are still there. I am not sure if the Computer enrichment course is still there or who teaches the Computer enrichment course (is it the Technology teacher?).

That reminds me: Do you think some schools in The Woodlands should try to adopt IBO standards at the elementary school level? It may help to establish IB in order to satisfy parents who want a more demanding curriculum than TAKS. Speaking of which, I believe TAKS curriculum belongs only in schools where kids wish to get into trades instead of academic fields.

  5. I know there are new prefab subdivisions that are zoned to Eisenhower High School inside and outside the Beltway. They are made by Lennar, Ryland, and KB Home.

Parkland Place, which is almost completely sold out, is very close to the golf course: http://www.ryland.com/find-your-new-home/1...lace.html?qmi=1

Mount Royal Village seems to be fairly close to Inwood Forest: http://www.lennar.com/findhome/directions....mp;DIVID=HLWLEN

  6. I have a book about China called China Road...

The reason why the sweatshop workers do not rebel is because they feel that they are making good wages (rural farm wages tend to be much less than sweatshop wages).

Coog said: "Some just love them and think the USA should abdicated to all things to them. Then there are the ones who see them for what they are: opportunistic money chasers."

Why not take the middle ground? The author of China Road does this... On one hand, he likes the determination of the Chinese to become a superpower and to finally end vicious history cycles, but on the other hand he dislikes the political realities of China and the corrupt effects of the government. See, the current "Communist" government is similar to various Chinese dynasties. The dynasties often came into power promising reform, became corrupt and autocratic, and collapsed.

Now, Coog, that does not mean that democracy reformers have a good track record in China. The Chinese feel weary of that because the movements were either crushed or lead to the collapse of the government.

To call the people who are not rural (Rural Chinese make up most of China, though) and not sweatshop laborers "slaves" is SOMEWHAT pushing it; the author of China Road refers to the Chinese government as having transformed the "birdcage" into an "aviary" - people cannot get into politics, but they may pursue any desire to make money.

The author is angered by events such as the suppression of the Uighurs and the AIDS crisis in one of the Chinese provinces.

By the way, the analogy regarding Chinese sweatshops also applies to the Dubai "guest workers" - they feel like they make better money in the UAE than they make at home (India, Philippines, etc.), so why should they stop working? Doesn't this apply to illegal immigrants in the United States?

On one hand, we could pull the Gulf States (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar) closer to the West. On the other hand, they need to discard outdated and un-Western concepts (extreme anti-Homosexuality, citizenship laws, etc.) and improve human rights records.

  7. I had compiled a list of CISD schools by ESL percentage for another thread... lemme see where it went...

  8. Let me expound on Coog's statements.

Dubai has "guest workers" - They are foreign workers from India, Philippines, etc. that come to Dubai to do manual work. They serve as Dubai's cheap labor, as our illegal immigrants serve as our cheap labor.

Some employers can be very abusive to the guest workers, so there are some human rights concerns about the treatment and legal rights of the workers.

Another neat fact: Dubai has more slaves per capita than any other city.

Look for the bubble to burst when you uses slaves to build your faux-city.

  9. You can compare the personal vs. property crime for both areas by following the links I posted earlier. I'll do you the favor of checking out the cold, hard facts. Please see below:

    Sugar Land

    Personal (violent) crime: 24-32

    Property (petty) crime: 35-36

    The Woodlands

    Personal (violent) crime: 36

    Property (petty) crime: 56

As you can see, Sugar Land is lower on both counts. What's your next argument? Are you going to point me toward YouTube?

ProHouston: Which site did it come from?

  10. Lemme look it up and see if I can get a juicy story...

EDIT: I found "The chained lion at the Texas Flea Market had previously mauled a set of 2-year-old twins and was severely underfed when it penetrated an 8-year-old girl's skull with its fangs in 1987." at http://www.tpj.org/page_view.jsp?pageid=79&pubid=22 - Now I'm looking for the story on the Chronicle...

EDIT: here's more from the Chron: http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=1989_593993

" Gary Durkovitz, 35, styled himself as "the beastmaster" because he owned a scraggly, malnourished lion that he displayed publicly. Back in the fall of 1987, that lion had seized and severely injured an 8-year-old girl at a Houston flea market. The lion was shot during the attack, then later destroyed by a fatal injection.

Because of the publicity surrounding his case, Durkovitz's trial on a charge of injury to a child was moved to San Antonio. A jury there in April convicted him and gave him 10 years probation and a $5,000 fine. A month later back in Houston, he pleaded guilty in an unrelated child molestation case and got five years in prison.

Houston furniture king Jim "Mac" McIngvale was a principal owner of the now defunct flea market where the attack occurred. He pleaded no contest to injuring a child. As punishment, District Judge Ted Poe ordered the businessman, best known for his furniture commercials on television, to make a series of commercials on the subject of child abuse. "

EDIT: 8-year old Roxanne Hernandez was the victim - It seems like she survived the incident: http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=1988_545397

  11. 249 to back up to that mess?? Where is the emoticon token on a reefer?

Until editor adds that, you should find an emoticon under the influence of Mary Jane, upload it to Photobucket, and then use it as an emoticon image on the forum :)

 Never fails. Somebody mentions a house and you pop up with the nearby schools. Priceless. Yeah...I'm gonna move into that place with my kids in tow tout suite.

It would be funny if a family moved into that house :) - Anyway, even though many central Houston areas do not appeal to families, I add the info if it is not already on HAR, just in case a family wants to move in...
