  1. What I would have done instead for an Absolut Mexico ad would be this...

    "In an Absolut World..."

    And it shows a table with a globe pattern. Five people are sitting at the table - each represents, from left to right, Canada, the USA, Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador - Perhaps they could be playing cards or drinking Absolut... - they all look like they are having fun, so there is no feeling of inadequacy...

  2. I truly believe that most crime happens to people that are looking for it. If you're not selling or buying drugs, you should be fine.

    468014585542m.jpg

    IMHO that is the case too.

    Also, though, Snopes has some tips on how to avoid "random" crime:

    * Snopes evaluates this chain letter about how to avoid random crime and offers its own thoughts: http://www.snopes.com/crime/prevent/ninetips.asp - the important part is not the e-mail discussed, but the important part IS the commentary by Barbara Mikkelson.

  3. Says Metro: They're making room for the Greyhound station at the Intermodal Terminal, just north of UH-Downtown. In the same breath they say they haven't yet spoken to Greyhound. But, if you were building a bright shiny new terminal, would you want Greyhound there?

    Still may be going on, but at least for awhile, the cab drivers were dealing to their riders.

    And, I'm not sure the prison system still has people waiting for former inmates to get off the bus, and to ensure they go on their way to their official destination. One of the first things the former inmates do: buy beer.

    IMO it's not so much that it's Greyhound, but it's how the Greyhound station is handled. If they had security around the whole block I don't think it will be a problem.

    With the current Midtown Greyhound they have security in the building and at the front, so the panhandlers go to the sides. There needs to be security surrounding the station, with security guards (armed, of course) willing to shoo away beggars, winos, and panhandlers.

  4. Someone needs to explain basic statistics to VicMan. If the frequency is 18 minutes, what is the average wait time.

    Anyway. I'm in San Francisco right now for a conference. Beautiful weather. Ashame I won't have any time to play before I head back -- the infamous new SF LRT line is just across from our meeting @ UCSF. If you want to have a discussion about cost overruns and lower than expected ridership....

    I got these straight from the METRO website (and provided a source) - The wait time depends on when the rider appears and it depends on exactly which routes are used to transfer. I don't see what needs to be explained to me.

    EDIT: I see - By "Wait time" in this case, I meant frequency (or maximum wait time) - this is just a case of me not properly labeling the statistics.

  5. If you have 10 minutes before the train comes, METRO isn't doing its job.

    I was referring to transfer centers where it would be reasonable to wait 10 minutes for a bus.

    Here are "times between" for rail cars: http://www.ridemetro.org/SchedulesMaps/Pdfs/700-redline.pdf

    On most times on weekdays the frequency (maximum wait) is under 10 minutes. On weekends frequencies are always over 10 minutes.

    Monday through Thursday

    * 4:30 AM to 7:30 PM - 6 minutes

    * 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM - 12 minutes

    * 9:30 PM to 12:45 AM - 18 minutes

    Friday

    * 4:30 AM to 7:30 PM - 6 minutes

    * 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM - 12 minutes

    * 9:30 PM to 2:15 AM - 18 minutes

    Saturday

    * 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM - 15 minutes

    * 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM - 12 minutes

    * 10:00 PM to 2:15 AM - 18 minutes

    Sunday

    * 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM - 15 minutes

    * 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM - 12 minutes

    * 10:00 PM to 12:45 AM - 18 minutes

    EDIT: Corrected words

  6. Did you say Highland Park? Isn't that place just like River Oaks?

    On this thread someone told me that Preston Hollow is a better comparison to River Oaks; Preston Hollow is a neighborhood within Dallas while the Park Cities are independent municipalities. Also most of Highland Park, all of University Park, and a smidgen of Dallas are in Highland Park ISD.

    On the other hand most Preston Hollow people send their kids to private schools. River Oaks has many in private school, but this is the same neighborhood that asked for (and got!) its neighborhood public elementary school back in the mid-1990s: http://www.houstonpress.com/Issues/1995-04.../news_full.html

  7. They probably thought you would have gone out and replaced the tools the next day. I had to learn the same lesson once. I have caught day laborers in the act once, trying to steal the cabinets that were in the garage. Pressed charges and all, think they got deported. They weren't my workers but they were from another jobsite down the street. I've had shingles, sod, wood, tools, doors, garage door openers all stolen when I was building.

    And to add you could buy your own CCTV camera and hide it somewhere so you can see the people stealing your stuff.

  8. Yours is a very imprecise map.

    Try this one (4.1MB). It shows city limits, limited purpose annexations (where they tax commercial zones like 1960 but don't provide services), the ETJ, and all existing and proposed major thoroughfares.

    Thanks for the map, TheNiche :)

    Is Summerwood really a limited purpose annexation? This map shows the same subdivision as also a part of the Lake Houston Super Neighborhood: http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/suprnbhd..._Maps/sn_44.pdf

  9. The panhandlers know that there is security inside the bus station so they go to the side to intercept riders.

    When I arrived at the bus station and went to the side to take a ride one time, some guy went up to me and asked, as an opening question, "Are you prejudiced against black people?"

    I said no so he made some request I didn't understand; I just said "No thanks - I have a ride." Then he asked me for two dollars - "I have no money" (I would have given the beggar NOTHING even if I had money) - I went into my mom's car and she drove off. I didn't notice at the time, but she told me she was honking the horn to get that guy off of me.

    In a way I felt amused by how a beggar would use that question to try to guilt me into giving him money...

  10. i believe there's one on the block where live is. (east side of main between preston and prairie)

    the pedestrian level here is nowhere near that of japan. can you say rancid food?

    Yeah, I can understand why perishable food would be definately out of the question for any vending machines at light rail stops.

  11. installed drinking fountains downtown but hooked up non-potable water rendering them useless, etc.

    Where can I find the useless drinking fountains? Next time I go downtown I would like to find them, take photos, hold water samples, etc.

    If I was METRO instead of having water fountains in Downtown I would put vending machines selling soft drinks at some light rail stops. In Japan many vending machines serve pedestrians at street corners, so METRO could introduce this concept to Houston. I'm not sure if the machines would require extra electronic surveillance, though.

  12. As someone who studies demographic trends for a living, I think the Houston numbers were artificially low this year - accounting for the back lash from the prior years' Katrina gains. Many of the Katrina evacuees who enhanced Houston's population last year returned home to Louisiana. The exceptional net return of Katrina evacuees last year detracted from the total growth in Houston. Given the strength of the energy industry, Houston should experience dramatic growth

    I wonder how many of the Katrina evacuees returned and how many are staying...

  13. Wolff said he hoped the city of Houston would build an overpass at the tracks.

    IMO METRO needs to step up to the plate and build an underpass otherwise there is no chance for success. to even suggest that the city should do something is ludicrous. METRO's planners should be fired!

    to blame UP for this is also a cop out. METRO is JUST finding this out? sound familiar?

    Should I contact the Community Outreach address here and then send a written letter to the HQ - http://www.ridemetro.org/contact/index.asp ? Before a route is planned a guy should visually see the entire stretch and make notes of the terrain, and METRO ought to step up to the plate and simply build the underpass.

  14. It's zoned to, in Houston ISD:

    * MacArthur ES

    * Cullen MS

    * Yates HS

    As said in another thread HISD is considering closing MacArthur ES and moving the students to Peck ES (As seen here: http://blogs.chron.com/schoolzone/2008/03/....html#comments) - Then again I don't think people buying in Riverside Terrace are particularly interested in the local schools, since the local zoned schools do not have the reputation that private schools and the Bellaire/West U/River Oaks area public schools and the magnets enjoy.

    Anyhow, it's a shame that a photo is not there at the moment. The person maintaining the entry needs to post a photo so people will know what the house looks like.

  15. It is the Alexan at Bunker Hill. There are also some apartments off of Gaylord that are behind the Village Fire Department. I would stay away from anything north of Westview and West of Bunker Hill if you are looking on the north side of I-10.

    Also, anything along Memorial Drive until you get to Dairy Ashford.

    I must add that the Alexan at Bunker Hill, in Houston, is zoned to:

    *Woodview Elementary School

    *Spring Branch Middle School

    *Spring Woods High School
