  1. The computer data from AF447 is already leading investigators in a path of a possible outcome http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/worl...icle6430398.ece

For completion's sake they need to find the FDR and CVR to get a fuller picture.

From what we have here it suggests that the pilots may have slowed the aircraft down too much during the encounter with the storm, creating a high altitude stall. This may not have been purposeful, and we still need to wait for the French and Brazilian crews to collect the data and for the French to analyze the data and release the final accident report.

  2. I can only speak for myself, but the freedom to live off campus was a primary factor for me going to UH instead of a different second-tier school.

Many universities that otherwise require freshmen to live on campus allow people who live in the university's metropolitan area to commute from home. I bet UH may require first year people who do not live in the Houston area to live in dormitories.

Furthermore, it's located in a terrible part of town, and the university hasn't been very successful in mitigating the effects of living in such an undesirable area.

UH seems to be at a crossroads between a totally run-down part of town and several well-kept areas. It's like a patchwork quilt.

  3. As for where, statistically, most Muslims live: Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world; India and Pakistan have sizeable Muslims as well. Saudi Arabia, one of the countries on the Arabian peninsula, has 1% of the Muslims in the world.

Sarahiki, since most of the Muslims you know are in the Middle East, is this due to your job or some other kind of connection?

99% of the Muslims I know live in villages and cities in the Middle East. So that's exactly what I'm talking about. I guess I know some Muslims in this country, too, but not too many.
  4. Air France Flight 447, traveling between Rio de Janeiro and Paris on May 31-June 1, crashed into the sea. There were no survivors. Wreckage was found days later by search crews.

    This case is scary because:

    * The aircraft, the Airbus A330, was relatively new

    * Air France is known for experienced crews and is a safe airline

    * The deep ocean has cliffs, and it will be difficult to find the cockpit voice recorder, the flight data recorder, and any valuable wreckage.

I hope the case is solved so that this will never happen again.

  5. I don't think Continental would want to support a downtown rail line to Hobby, what with it being a Southwest Airline's hub. In fact, I would expect the to fight any such proposal.

I would imagine CO would say "If you build it to Hobby, build it to IAH too" - And for good reason

Good advice, but I think many people who'd be willing to take passenger rail to the airport might be less inclined to take a bus. Also, take into account that parking downtown isn't really any cheaper than parking off-site at IAH, so downtown airport service (bus or rail) is great for downtown workers but not so great for others who'd have to pay their own parking.

But people can connect to the airport direct from other routes in town. They don't have to park their cars in Downtown. METRORail announces the location of the airport direct service, for instance.

  6. I was looking at flying into KMFE(McAllen) and noticed a few airlines had BS flights. From KMFE-KAUS-to MEMPHIS, charlotte then back to IAH... WTF?

*scratches head* i don't get it...

Some people actually take those flights...

  7. Well, yes, but a school opening shows that there was a growth in residential occupancy of an area. I don't know where to find lists of building permits by date, but I would imagine there was some growth in housing units.

Read more closely. The phrase "very little" has a different meaning than the term "nothing".
  8. Aldine ISD is building new schools in the area in its territory immediately south of the airport. Marcella Intermediate (16250 Cotillion) is in the Greenspoint district; it opened in 2007. During that same year the district's bond election passed; a total of 626 residents voted in favor. I will say again: The bond passed with 626 voting in favor. http://blogs.chron.com/schoolzone/2007/05/...counts_f_1.html

Actually, aside from the commercial components of Greenspoint, very little other than warehouses gets built anymore between downtown and IAH. It's just not a very desirable area.
  9. 1. In terms of real estate sales, yes. I was speaking about that one poster's particular concerns rather than a wider neighborhood sales concern.

    2. So they could say "we'll take one, but we'll block any additional developments"

We've already established why they would be a problem (for some people, not necessarily others).

You can't end up with several in a cluster without first having one by itself.

  10. By matching the Google Map of the proposed development (inside Rural Area 15B, an area bounded by FM2920, Kuykendahl, and Rhodes) with the current (as of writing) high school and middle attendance boundaries and a new elementary attendance boundary, this is where the residents would be zoned to:

    * Klein Oak High School: http://www.kleinisd.net/docs/1-mapkohs.pdf

    * Krimmel Intermediate School: http://www.kleinisd.net/docs/1-mapkrimmel.pdf

    * Mueller Elementary School (new): http://www.kleinisd.net/docs/50-ElemFinal.pdf (If Mueller was not opening, this would have been zoned to Benignus: http://www.kleinisd.net/docs/1-mapBenignus.pdf)

Klein ISD is opening high school #5, which had been delayed, on a to be announced date: http://www.kleinisd.net/default.aspx?name=kisd.08bond.home - I'm not sure whether this development would be still in Klein Oak or if it would be in another attendance boundary. Also when Ulrich MS opens (construction on it started in 2008), I'm not certain how it would affect this area (as I haven't seen newer attendance boundaries)

Here is the application log showing Gosling Oaks: http://www.tdhca.state.tx.us/multifamily/h...ntiesAppLog.pdf

For people who oppose the development, if any of these schools would be severely overcrowded and current KISD bonds would not remedy the situation, this could be a reason to oppose the development.

  11. I know HP's actually on 249, but it is still a part of the greater northwest Harris County area, which is centered along 290. People work in the U.S. 290 area, so the area deserves transportation solutions as much as the inner city does. I was referring to the first paragraph of his first post in the thread.

VicMan, look at a map. HP is on 249. :D

DrFood is just making observations and coming to a conclusion. I happen to have done the same about this congressman last year during the Hurricane Ike recovery. Culberson drove up to a group of National Guardsmen handing out supplies at Tully Stadium. Asking what he could do for them or if they needed anything, one of the guardsmen said that they could sure use a hamburger. Well, he got on the radio and made a big deal out of these men not being taken care of and acting as if something unpatriotic was going on. He pleaded on several radio stations for food to be brought to these first responders. The guy was clearly using this opportunity to campaign. BTW, so much food was delivered to these poor guys, they themselves became overwhelmed and the whole seen became disruptive to the task that they were directed to do. They had to ask some organization to come get all of the food and take it to some place that could use it, for they were not set up to hand out food. Relief organizers were confused as to how this happened. Thank John Culberson, the grandstander.

  12. Continental Airlines should aggressively pursue the naming rights to the Dynamo Stadium. The airline had been named the official airline of the Dynamo: http://ro-a.redorbit.com/news/business/128...namo/index.html, so there's no conflict of interest regarding another airline. - Continental could, at some point, get more revenue by getting the naming rights. It makes sense since CO is based out of Downtown - also CO flies to many Latin American countries and could advertise its brand to the futbolistas from Texas to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

BTW the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ used to be the Continental Arena. Maybe CO could recycle that name for the Dynamo stadium.

  13. The GOOD news: I was told one of the major public housing units was totally destroyed. Galveston had one of the largest allotment of public housing for a city of it's size in America. NO public housing units should be built or repaired in Galveston.

Yes, the public housing should go to the burbs (La Marque and Texas City)

  14. Did you search for Newark ticketing on other days?

Airline ticket pricing (for all of the airlines) is very complicated.

Good luck even trying reconcile Continental's pricing with any sort of reason.

I discovered recently that it costs about half as much to buy a ticket to Providence or Albany via Newark and skip the second section than to buy a ticket to Newark.

Additionally, the cheapest I can usually find to fly from IAH to Hartford, CT is around $150. This summer, I got a ticket from Hartford to Cleveland to Houston to Albuquerque for $72.

  15. Why would the state duplicate efforts by supporting 2 schools in Houston. If they wanted to give more students in Houston access to Higher Ed, then just give more money to UH to build more infrastructure.

The University of Texas and University of Houston groups are separate public university systems which report to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. While they are public university systems, they have separate management. The UT system is based in Austin, while the UH system is based in Houston.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area multiple university systems exist in the same metropolitan area. The Dallas/Fort Worth area, for instance, has multiple university systems. UT operates UTD in Richardson and UTA in Arlington. In addition University of North Texas has a campus in Denton. In the Houston area, there is the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, and Prairie View A&M in Prairie View; the last one is far out in periphery in Waller County.

One advantage is that a UT System school could be used as a way for people to transfer to UT Austin. I.E. people at UT San Antonio could transfer to UT Austin after two years at UTSA. People at a Houston campus could do the same.
