  1. i would vote for a place that serves food, but isn't necessarily a restaurant.

my favorite is Warren's (and Market Square), but maybe i need to get out more

Volcano isn't terrible but i have always been lucky and parked within a block or two of the place.

Past gatherings i can remember were at Berryhill (Heights), Kelvin Arms, and Warren's...they all seemed to accommodate well.

  2. apparently folks (from the metro/metro stop, according to the home owner) like to hang out in their yard and litter, poo, etc...

the signs are against the deed restrictions, and someone from the homeowner's association said something like "your house is by a metro stop, you should have expected this when you bought the house..."

there was something on the news about it, but i can't find anything now.

  3. *if* hydrogen cars ever become priced to sell to the general public, there will have to be something made to go wrong to fuel the repair industry that makes an incredible amount of money off of (on-purpose) badly designed vehicles.

the auto industry has the know-how to make clean, reliable, affordable cars, just not the will to let go of the money involved in not doing so.

  4. ^what would Galleria-area suggestions be? (i rarely go anywhere there).

my first vote would be a downtown location, though - i guess i am just used to street parking (or public transport if possible).

  5. I'd like to get some pics of it coming down, if only I knew what time. Any ideas? Some time after 6:15 I guess...

when the Methodist building was imploded, folks started gathering at Rice early - i was there about thirty minutes before the scheduled time (maybe 6am?).

i think people that work in the vicinity got/will get an email with the specifics.

    i'll ask around.

  6. it's all about balancing financial smarts and personal preferences. in my case, i have my things i like to splurge on, but i also must use discretion in spending and saving because of debts and future major purchases (a home).

that being said, i find modesty extremely attractive

  7. welcome to the forum

i keep a close eye on demolition permits (there are so many each week) - i do what i can to document and post on my web site. it is great to have someone else interesting in the documentation as well.

there are several groups in Houston that could be helpful - those that you have mentioned above, and also Houston Arts and Media. They are working on a Houston Neighborhood Series project (and others) that you may find interesting, and they meet monthly

  8. Pious rhymes with Prius for a reason. And just what landfill will all the hybrid batteries land in?

    hopefully recycled...

Is there a recycling plan in place for nickel-metal hydride batteries?

Toyota has a comprehensive battery recycling program in place and has been recycling nickel-metal hydride batteries since the RAV4 Electric Vehicle was introduced in 1998. Every part of the battery, from the precious metals to the plastic, plates, steel case and the wiring, is recycled. To ensure that batteries come back to Toyota, each battery has a phone number on it to call for recycling information and dealers are paid a $200 "bounty" for each battery.

  9. ^ I think that it pretty much on target - exemplary=TAKS consumed.

I went to Horn for elementary school, and it has of course changed over the years - from a brief chat with someone with a child currently attending Horn, the education is on par with any other decent school, but there is general decline in arts/music/extras that is widespread in all public schools.

as far as the parental rudeness, i was told that it is mostly along Avenue B and that Holly St. is a much better option. this is also a change from what i remember, but Bellaire has changed (for the worse, imo) since then, too.

  10. Back to living cheap. I found that AT&T has a $15 DSL package that they do not advertise...naturally. Also, for those who almost always use a cell phone, but want a land line for 911 purposes, they have a service that charges per call. It's only about $10.

25 bucks for phone and internet. Now that's cheap!

i have the $15 DSL plan, and it is quite alright. the local phone is about $25 (unlimited calls).

at this moment, no cable TV.

one of my favorite past times, going to restaurants, is lessening. that saves an enormous amount.

other than that, trying to put as much as i can to paying off remaining interest-laden debt, and bracing myself for upcoming student loan repayments from this late round of school.
