  1. Worker sues bar after beer bottle explodes, blinding him

A 19-year-old Houston man who says he was blinded in his right eye after a beer bottle exploded in his face has filed a lawsuit against the Heights area sports bar where the incident allegedly happened.

On June 10 while working at Sawyer Park sports bar on Washington Avenue, Antonio Garcia Tax was loading bottles of Dos Equis in a cooling container, when a bottle exploded after making contact with the ice solution, according to a lawsuit filed this month in Harris County.

The impact sent pieces of the glass bottle directly into Tax's right eye. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital where he had eye surgery.

Due to Tax's injury, he has not been able to work, the lawsuit said. Waverly Nolley, Tax's lawyer, says they're suing for $3 million.

According to the lawsuit, Tax is suing Sawyer because it owned, possessed and controlled the beer bottle and container that disabled his eye.

The lawsuit alleges Sawyer failed at training employees about safety procedures when loading glass beer bottles.

Officials with the sports bar did not return calls for comment.

Tax is also suing the Houston Distributing Company, for transporting the dangerous and defective bottle to Sawyer, according to court documents.

  2. There is a public meeting tomorrow night (Wednesday, January 6) at 6:30pm at Stevenson Elementary (5410 Cornish) to discuss the changes planned for I-10.

This seems like a good opportunity for people to get out and voice support/opportunity for the proposed changes. One topic I am really interested in is the proposed retaining wall that would be used to keep White Oak Bayou from spilling on to I-10 and how that will affect houses in the immediate area.

Encouraging to see how the sounds walls are coming up north and south of the new feeder roads.

  3. Noticed a sign from David Weekley on the property directly across from the West End Park. Will be looking forward to seeing how this development progresses. With the park improving and this new development, it should help the surrounding area(s) continue to improve. So far the main builder in the area has been Parra Builders. The David Weekly's townhouses are priced in the high 200 range. This should work out well, as at present new townhouses by Parra are in the mid to high 300's, and the houses by Cornerstone Builder are in the low to mid 400's. Guess the Quiet Zone has enabled builders to make a case to develop this area North of the railway tracks in a bigger way. Here are more details on the David Weekly development. If anyone has more details on the floor plans, etc., will be looking forward to having a look at them.

David Weekley Homes is excited to announce we will begin building in Houston’s affluent Rice Military community at 1401 Patterson in Winter 2011. Located at the corner of Patterson and Eli, this private, gated community will feature our award-winning detached homes, priced from the high $200s. You’ll also enjoy:

    • 19 homes available!
    • Square footages ranging from 2,000 to 2,350
    • Gated community
    • Nearby park
    • Beautiful, 200-year-old oak tree is the anchor of this community
    • Prime Houston location just minutes from Downtown, The Galleria and the Texas Medical Center
  4. It is actually a gut cinch that this place goes under. It is even designed to go under. They open with a splash, rake in the cash from the see and be seen crowd, and once they move on, shut down and re-tool. This happens in every trendy club. The only questions are what date does it close and what does it become.

Police said the victim, whose name has not been released, was rushed to Ben Taub General Hospital. He had been shot several times. Police did not release his condition. Hope they close this bar down or the management is forced to change the way they do business. Right now it just spells more and more trouble for our neighborhood.

  6. Anyone have any recommendations for a no-dress-code, veggie friendly sports bar? Location not a biggie. My partner is a Steelers fan and we're also entertaining an out of town guest who happens to be a vegetarian yoga teacher.

"The Counter" has an awesome Veggie burger. Vegetarian Yoga Teacher can even add sprouts, greens, carrot strings, feta cheese and all the other healthy stuff... Enjoy!!!

  7. Finally got around to making it the Big Mamou and VERY impressed. My friend had many questions about the wine, Brenda (Chef/Owner) came to the table with tastings and discussed the wine selections. We talked about the menu and dinner specials. My friend got the delicious short ribs (which is not very cajun) and they were EXCELLENT and i got Shrimp Creole which was PERFECT.

Found out they also serve breakfast on Saturday and Sunday which sounds marvelous.

    Give is a try!

I like the place and the people are definitely friendly, but at the same time, for what one gets do not feel the food is worth the price. I hope they reduce their prices and in the long run get more customers and eventually do even better.

  8. sorry for not addressing the topic...

This seems pretty reasonable (not knowing any further details). I've been looking at lots around 10,000 sq ft and they seem to range from the $25-40 per sq. ft range. Of course the price can vary drastically depending on where on washington, whats on the lot, etc.

SilverJK and Sowanome, thanks for the feedback and for staying on topic. The lot is empty, has decent access, and is located close to Heighs between I10 and Washington. I know a couple of years ago land in the area was close to $32-$40 per sf ft and wanted to get feedback if the downturn, plans to build Walmart have reduced the prices. I guess only time will tell. Appreciate the feedback from this forum.

  9. Would like to get your feedback on land prices in the Rice Military / West End area. Is $30/sq.ft a reasonable price or is that high or on the low side.

Will be interesting to get feedback on this question now and 5-6 years later once all the development on Washington has taken place, and Yale is redone with the new Walmart and the fancy gas lamps on the repaved bridge across the Bayou!!!

  10. Does anyone know the procedure of applying for a demolition permit such as, where the form can be downloaded, what is needed, how long it takes, etc.

This an old house / shed that has not been lived in for years and is not liveable in its current state. Gas, water, etc., has been disconnected. This is far from a historic place, so not to worry!

    Thanks.

  11. That made me throw up in my mouth a little

How to properly address your Walmart Mailers

If you live in the immediate area of the proposed site (as I do), you may have received a brochure from Walmart telling you about the project. Do NOT send the mailer back to them. We believe they will use any returned mailer as a ‘vote’ for support for the effort irrespective of what is written on it.

Instead, we would like you to do to write ‘NO’ all over the mailer in easily legible writing and re-Address the mailer to the Mayor’s Office:

    Mayor Annise D. Parker

    City of Houston

    P.O. Box 1562

    Houston, Tx 77251

Do NOT send your mailers back to Walmart as they will count them as a positive response and twist your opinion of the project.!

  12. There are two beautiful (mostly white with slight shades of off white) cats (mother and kitten) at the St. Theresa's church entrance. Noticed them there last night. Have made sure that they have water / food.

Does any one know of someone that would like to adpot these or a shelter that will take them. I am not a cat person, and they have even got myself going there to feed them.

If you can please pass this message on. I will call Friends For Life on 19th street and ask if they will accept them.

If you want to have a look at them, go to the church entrance, stay towards your left and call out. They rest / sleep in the bushes / behind the flower beds (under the bell tower) but will come out if called.

Please do your best to pass this message on. Thanks for your help.

(I will keep you updated as to how they are doing and if they have found a home or are no longer at this location).

  13. Being new to the area, this is so helpful! We've been to some of these places (Jax, Berryhill, Teothihuacan , Pie in the Sky, Spanish Flower, Hickory Hollow, Chicago Pizza) and I can't wait to try all of the other places on your lists that we haven't been too yet. Now that I know Empire Seafood serves chinese food and not just seafood, I think that will be at the top of my list. I've been craving Wonton soup and didn't know where to go!

Try the Wonton soup @ Les Givral's cafe (Vietnamese restaurant). It is good :) , and reasonably priced at ~$7.

Went to the Washington Av. location on the weekend.

  14. I don't frequent the area, so I don't know what to expect of the bar, but...I think if a place advertises itself as a sports bar, then short running shorts should absolutely be acceptable even on a THURSDAY. :o

In my mind, a sports bar's dress code shouldn't be any more strict than that of All-American Burger: "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Dice." Otherwise I will kick 100% of their ass.

How ironic... Sawyer Park Sports Bar is promoting a Dodgeball summer season. Wonder what balls they want their clientele to dodge or rather not dodge!!!
