  1. Exactly, Cdeb, they are currently widening both Spring Cypress and Jarvis Rd. Spring Cypress is really the only road that is prone to backups and they are trying to address the issue. Both of these are good east-west roads to use instead of 290. Also, most people don't seem to realize 290 is great on the weekends. The traffic in NW Harris really isn't bad except for during rush hour on 290. On Saturday I can get to Chuy's on Westheimer in less than 30 minutes, or the Galleria in about 25. For rush hour, I take the park and ride and listen to music or work for an hour on the bus...really a small price to pay to live in what I think is a great area.

We also have tons of places that aren't really cookie cutter, like Carl's BBQ off 290, POs burgers on Telge, Newks and Corkscrew cafe by the movie theatre, and Alicia'a mexican. I am sure there are others that I am missing...

Speaking of...can we get a Chuy's or a Hula Hut or a Shady Grove??? I need to write some emails to Chuy's.

Good points. It doesn't take too long to get places (sans rush hour). About 25 minutes to the Galleria/Downtown...20 minutes to Memorial City, etc.

Alicia's does indeed rock. Great fajitas, prefer it even to Lupe Tortilla.

Mezzanote is great for more upscale dining.

Still, we need more interesting stuff.

RE: Chuy's, Hula Hut, Shady Grove, Kirby Lane -- I would like to see some of those Austin restaurants out here...seeing as how we're on the far Southeast side of Austin. ;)

  2. How can you folks stand the traffic up there, with the one lane roads approaching 290.

When are they going to widen that road between Kroger and Home Depot? I was up there last summer and that was a royal PITA.

    Cykat

Easy...I don't. I live in Longwood, which is about equidistant to 290 and 249, so we usually head towards 249 for dining and shopping. I take 'the Huff' or Telge out to get to 290 in the mornings for what usually is a 30 minute commute to CityWest (BMC Campus) in Westchase.

That intersection at 290 Spring Cypress needs some MAJOR reworking. I avoid it like the plague.

  3. Agreed, the dining/retail choices off 290 in Cypress are currently lacking in variety and appeal. People are so hungry for ANYTHING new, they will jam through the doors of any new business that opens up out here. I feel like we probably won't get the good stuff until after the 2010 census comes out and demographers realize just how many people live out here and how great the demographics are. You can draw a 5-mile radius map from the Spring Cypress/290 intersection and pull up $100K plus Avg HH income at every increment.

I'm with Cnote - Don't care much for Olive Garden (moo) and can't stand any of the Landry's chain restaurants (bleh).

Note to Restaurateurs: We're not asking for much. Maybe a Churrasco's. An Escalante's. A Maggianos. A Benihana. A Brio's. A Houston's and perhaps some unique local fare (like we used to have with Dillas that has cool stuff for the kiddos).

I know Caldwell Watson has a riverwalk/waterfront planned for their Towne Lake development, so that holds promise.

  4. Would like to see some better restaurants come in, Pappasito's is always welcome....though I would love a Churassco's. Alicia's is building a larger Pad-site location in front of the center they're currently located in off Cypress-Rosehill(Fry).

They're building some new Apartments behind that, in the field adjacent to Cypress Ranch off Fry Rd.

As for what's planned for the area around Coles Crossing, I believe there's a Christus Hospital going in there so those may be regular retail or professionals, not sure.

  5. Keeping this in perspective, there are well over a million people in NW Harris County. Pretty massive area. CFISD alone has a population equivalent to the City of Austin. Those saying that this 'bump & rob' crime and other random criminal acts equates to what goes on in Houston or other areas of comparable size and population every day are simply way off.

With that said, I think the City of Houston is actively trying to push its junk out to the County. This was made quite clear when their policy regarding halfway houses was publicized as well as the Billboard fiasco. It's time for the Northwest communities to respond by incorporating themselves. If they incorporated into a single city, they'd immediately become one of the largest cities in the state. Whether or not they do that, or incorporate the individual communities of Cypress, Klein and Spring it will certainly help this area to better address these kinds of quality of life issues that affect the residents.

  6. Worse stuff than this happens several times a day, every day elsewhere in this city and in the suburbs. During the same day there was a carjacking in Sugar Land. Sure, it's rare to see this happen out here and I've no tolerance of it, but eventually these clowns are going to get busted or worse. The reason, this person's email has made it into evey inbox in NW Harris County is because it is so rare here.

  7. Seems okay...sure wish there was a J.Crew and maybe a William Sonoma or Pottery Barn for the wife...actually, maybe it is a good thing that there isn't....

I guess they could still add though.

I figure everything you listed will probably come later on at one of the planned centers (Bridgeland, Towne Lake or Fairfield Town Center).

  8. He can't win.

He can if things continue to tank like they've been tanking and more people wake up. Granted, I think the Republican Party establishment is dug in so tightly at the top as well as in their propaganda outlets that Ron's best bet is to go 3rd Party. He's shown he can raise big money from tens of thousands of small donations from avg joe Americans and not depend on the big special interests like the other candidates.

  9. I like that map too.

However, I think you'd have quite a lot of upset folks in Champion Forest who've been sending their children to KHS since time began there in the 1970's.

I think it more realistic to start that boundary line at the RR tracks near Cutten (to include the new Vintage Park area in the new HS zone).

    Other than that, great map!

  10. I agree, however they should not practice this at the expense of others. The KHS plan is nothing more than pandering to the wealthier KHS families. If I lived in the South end of the District I would be FURIOUS since they were wanting a new HS to relieve pressure off of KF, instead the district expanded KF, and it is still overcrowded.

That is one way to look at it, but rationally speaking they have to relieve overcrowding at KF and the only way to do it is to take those residents on the nearest side to the next school and send them there. The departure of those neighborhoods won't have any effect on KFHS other than allowing immediate enrollment relief, enabling a higher student-teacher ratio and more individual instruction and attention for kids that desparately need it.

  11. They SHOULD do everything they can to keep residents happy and ensure safe, productive learning environments for students that want to learn. Spring ISD could learn a thing or two. I think Klein residents and school board members have learned from Spring ISD's downfall. They've seen what happens when residents want to revolt.

(Spring ISD should rezone all of their North FM 1960 residents to Spring High so they can at least have one good remaining school feeder zone rather than 3 bad ones).
