Thanks for the welcome. I'd been reading this forum for months before I finally signed up to reply. I really enjoy the architecture, construction and demographic related topics discussed here.

    Now, as to your post:

    Don't Shoot The Messenger! :D

Seriously, that was what they said...and I also thought that was a poor excuse for a bad design. Now, if they had said it was high rise living for blind people who can't tell what it looked like....

  2. There was a news clip on one of the local stations about a year and a half ago, as to why there were so few windows on this building and why it was so ugly. It was designed with few windows so that those who are afraid of heights could still enjoy high-rise living. I don't think that answered the question of why it was so ugly, though.

  3. Back in the '80s, the Savoy was used as housing for South Texas College of Law students. I don't think the school was associated with the building. The building was called The Barrister Club. I think there was a bar on the first floor as well, but I am not sure. I bartended to get through law school, and much of 1984-1986, is a blur. At any rate, not much redesign was done. They just rented the old hotel rooms to STCL students looking for cheap rent and no transportation. Don't know when it closed. I left after 1986.

  4. Actually, the New York stadium deal is projected to cost $1.3 billion to taxpayers alone. The NY Jets are putting up $600 million. Some recent estimates have the stadium and related infrastructure coming in at $2.2 to $2.4 billion. There is huge opposition to it. So, 2010 is very iffy for New York. Dallas looks to be in their stadium by 2009, so they are safe.
