  1. I miss the quick edit feature.
  2. I keep reading this. Can someone educate me as to why they'd have to do this?
  3. Thanks for all the information y'all. But does anyone know something about the Master's programs in Texas in Urban Planning? I know A&M, UT and I think UT Dallas have programs in it.
  4. I started to read Suburban Nations at Borders and then went to the library to check it out, but they didn't have it. I'm def. gonna read that one. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll def read those as well. Actually, I'm halfway done with the Transportation one and it's been really good and interesting. I've read the prefaces for the other ones and they seem pretty good too. I'm trying to get information anyway, not entertainment. Awesome. You come through again, thanks. I really want to get a good grasp on economics too because I know it'll be more than beneficial.
  5. When the Rockets are clicking, they're almost unstoppable. I just got done reading ESPN The Magazine's article on Dwight Howard. Shaq said soemthing like he's gonna be the next great center. No doubt he will be one of them, but... Yao is the man. I have my doubts though that Tracy will be healthy all season. Maybe we should make the trade for Iverson, seeing that Bonzi is obviously never gonna suit up, one of the greatest mysteries of the NBA.
  6. What is ETJ? Am I the only who gets lost when people start using acronymns?
  7. Any have an update on this piece of land?
  8. Bank of America building, no doubt. It's been my favorite ever since I was a kid when my parents started driving me downtown from I-45 north.
  9. I'm just trying to get as much knowledge as I can on planning, transit, sprawl and anything related. These are the books I've checked out so far: The Creative City Home From Nowhere Creating Successful Communities; A Guidebook to Growth Managment Strategies Breaking the Gridlock; Moving Toward Transportation That Works I've been referred to a few others, but wanted to know if anyone has more. Thanks
  10. Oh, wow. I could imagine the shock then. It's the most dense city I've ever seen that is sprawled out.
  11. I went to a small school in Santa Clarita (where Six Flags is) and traveled around LA some and didn't think it was too ugly. Of course I did drive by a couple blocks where it looked like developers were building cardboard boxes to live in. That was kinda scary and quite a sight to see. And I'm reading one book on transit right now and it talks about people driving from the 'burbs in San Fran to work and making 3, 4 hour drives. Now that is in insane.
  12. I'm no expert, but I'd have to disagree with this statement. Ever flown into the LA area? You fly over communities for a good 30-45 minutes. It's crazy. I understand that in that part of Cali that many towns grew into each other, but still. People want to live in that area. I don't see sprawl ending. But yeah, maybe DT residential will end up being close to NY standards.
  13. How much more are the taxes? A lot? And which ones? Sales, property???
  14. Personally, I think the space program is a waste of money. Cool, but useless. I don't know, maybe that's my ignorance speaking. If anyone thinks so, please, enlighten me and explain why.
  15. Pumapayam directed me to this old thread. It enlightened me a little bit, and maybe that book will too. Experts, please forgive me. I'm just now starting to understand what things are good and bad as far as sprawl, urbanization and transit go.
  16. I normally tip between $1 and $3. Maybe it's just the way I was brought up, I don't know. Plus I'm po'
  17. Wish I understood what that's supposed to mean. And although I don't totally get it, the mentioning of the Port of Dallas was pretty funny.
  18. Just in the past few months have I become so intrigued and started thinking about sprawl in more specifics, so forgive me if this is a stupid question or if it's just an obvious observation. But are the likes of Wal-Mart, Target and other big stores like Borders, and even grocery stores like Kroger encouraging sprawl? It seems to me that the obvious answer is yes. So my next question is, is there any way government can work with say a Wal-Mart to encourage smaller stores in urban pockets? They could just build many more smaller ones. Of course my first thought is that they wouldn't want to do that because the cost of running a bigger store is much cheaper, but I don't know that for sure. But how can we encourage retailers and the likes to move in this direction? Or is our only hope that Mom-n-Pop stores will fill these needs? Aren't there small stores that fit in small places that are chains in places like NY, Chicago and Boston? I'm not trying to try and make Houston like them, but if we want to start to urbanize, we have to copy cat some. I'm just thinking about how to solve our sprawl problem. We always talk about transit and walkable neighborhoods; those are obvious. It seems like things like this aren't talked about enough. There are some bright minds out there that I've seen posting that I hope will bring some good thought to this discussion.
  19. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons for annexing from the city of Houston view and in this case, The Woodlands' view? It just seems to me that annexing would be better for both parties than the alternative taking place. But that's my naive opinion.
  20. I just came back from Dallas' forum?, and what I found was somewhat surprising. I searched for Houston topics just to see what they had to say about us and much of it was very positive. Many of the posters were happy to see what was going on here. I even saw a few, "way to go Houston!" posts. I found a little bit of jealousy as well, but not to the point where they dispised the development. Really, it was almost non-existent. It's kind of a shame that we even have this bitter rivalry. After coming away with some of their thoughts, I even hope we can all take a different approach to things; an approach that looks at things from the perspective that we're all Texans, and what both our cities do will improve our images as a whole. I know part of our resintment towards them is because they get more national recognition. But although they get it, they know that Houston is a great city as well and even admit it. To me, the important thing is that we both continue making our respective cities better and improved; not just for national recognition, but for ourselves and our communities most importantly. I am happy though that I have not really seen any Dallas bashing in this forum. And I hope that we can be just as positive about the improvment D is making, as they are for ours. Sorry if I sounded like Dr. Phil, but I just thought it was worth mentioning. ---------------------------------------------- Well, I just came from reading a few other Dallas vs. Houston posts in this DFW forum and noticed some of the moderators don't like the city bashing. Neither do I, and this post was not meant at all to start that type of thing. Just wanted to give some fresh perspective. Hope I don't make the moderators mad. If y'all see this thread fit for somewhere else, by all means, move it.
  21. Right. Remember now, he's from Albuquerque. It doesn't have to be Houston top of the line. Just something he hasn't seen before, being from ABQ. We're not looking to get wasted, just enjoy a cool atmosphere. And strippers will not be involved in this bachelor party.
  22. The article is here if you haven't seen it. What are the positives and negatives for this happening?
  23. My parents live in the Woodlands, but we'll go anywhere from Uptown to Downtown, it doesn't matter.
