  1. None of their locations stay open late. It is not a late night diner for drunks either. I know the east location has never been open for dinner except maybe one day a week. I've been to the midtown district 7 during lunch and it gets plenty of business. I don't think that people are having a problem finding it. If you look at the menu, you can tell its not exactly a stumble in at 2 in the morning, order greasy eggs kind of place.
  2. I think we do have a few of these already. Live Oak Lofts is a decent example. I wouldn't say "exceptionally designed" but its a nice building. Has the concrete floors, high ceilings. Some flaws, but few places are perfect. Anyway, this is an example of why it also currently doesnt work. One it is expensive compared to the fact you can get a townhouse for the same price. Two, people in Houston just aren't comfortable with the idea yet and thus the resale potential declines. I personally like the style a lot - but as Red Scare alluded to, size does matter as well.
  3. No offense, but can we give it a rest with the school zoning in every single post? I don't think this is anyone's number one concern with this project...
  4. Did you even watch the show? I don't think Spike really played up the black vs white thing as much I thought he would have. I really thought it was going to be all about that, especially with Spike involved, but he had quite a few whites from New Orleans on there. Is it easy to pick and choose and consciously decide who to include in the documentary? Obviously. But I don't think (at least in the part of part I I saw and the parts of today's I saw) he really went after the government for not aiding because people were black. Spike went after the slow reaction by the government. The usual other suspects were on to point the race finger (Al Sharpton), but the local N.O. media was also doing the same. The old mayor of new orleans said it best I thought during yesterday's part. When such a disaster happens, you do not let politics enter the picture. You don't think about who has the power to do this and who comes off looking better, you just send help. As for the shots at Bush, I thought they were justified. Spike didn't make Nagin look like a hero and he didn't do anything nice for Blanco either. He basically said Nagin was way overwhelmed and Blanco was pretty clueless and they did point at her for refusing Bush's aid. But Bush waiting for a week to even tour the area is pretty ridiculous, not to mention he didn't make the offers until that delayed visit. He still went to San Diego in the middle of the storm. The fact Brown was in charge of FEMA to begin with. That Chertoff could have cut through the red tape bit didn't. That Cheney was off fishing. I know its the media and easy to blame the fed government, but regardless, those aren't exactly the kind of actions that should have happened. Is it an unbiased look at the events? No. Was it interesting? Yes. I did like the parts today that made it pretty clear its not as if New Orleans was an oasis before this all happened. Crime, poverty, terrible schools, all were pointed out. They actually make a few positive comments about Houston being a much better situation in terms of these points. I think it was overall (at least the parts I saw) a well done documentary, that made a good point about whether it was politics, or whose fault it was, or whatever, it was that made everything go bad - one of the worst reactions to such a large disaster this country has ever seen. I missed the end today, but probably will DVR it on the 29th to fill in the gaps.
  5. On a separate but somewhat related note, it seems some of the retro trend in stadiums is starting to die down. Here's some pics/ design of the Arizona Cardinals new stadium. The exterior is definitely different from the norm, love it or hate it, I think its good to see some with a little more bold design. Reliant is a great place to see a game, but the exterior is rather drab. Design Photos Especially neat is the rolling tray system for their grass: "The team will play on an all-grass field that stays on a platform outside the stadium 340 days a year. Outdoors, the grass gets plenty of sun and water but none of the trapped humidity and heat generally found inside covered stadiums. A few hours prior to game time, the 18.9 million-pound tray of turf will slide 740 feet into the stadium, taking just over an hour to make the trip."
  6. Having used DC's pretty extensively, I personally think its easy to use, but not quite as good as the surface would make it look. I do like how it reaches Reagan airport and all tourist sights easily. That, to me, is its strongest point. However, there are quite a few dead spots in DC that I'm guessing just weren't considered essential during construction and as a result, the Metro ends up being limited. Two areas that are not serviced by it are Tyson's Corner and Georgetown. There are shuttles into Georgetown or you can walk across the bridge, but its still a traffic nightmare on M street. Tyson's Corner is understandable why it was left out, since most of the growth has probably been over the last 10 years. Still the sooner they get service there, the better. It seems to be where a lot of people work now. Within DC proper, there are some areas where there is probably a good 20-30 minute walk to find a station. Obviously you can't cover everyone, but the point is that the Metro its not as extensive as New York's subway by any means People I know that live there almost never take the metro. It still is a driving city, but mostly by choice. Which is better I guess, that there is an option, but its kind of ridiciulous that the NOVA population and even a lot of DC basically sees the Metro, knows it could probably get them close to where they need to go, but just chooses not to take it anyway. Not really a design flaw, but just strange.
  7. irs next to the vault, rusk and main basically...
  8. Cotton Exchange has already re-opened. This was around a few years ago, but closed, and now has since remodeled some and back in operation. It will also house Seattles Best Coffee in a few weeks (possibly already) and then be open during the day as well. the place on Franklin and main I remember being mentioned in the Chronicle once, but don't remember that the name was either. I'm gald you mentioned the cross streets because I remember reading about it, but then not remembering where it was located. I'll have to check it out.
  9. So the initial part done in 2010 doesn't include Hobby airport then does it? Seems like that would make this line a huge success if it did include the airport, but don't know if that is included in this initial stage. Still, if people can cab it to Mykawa/ Griggs and then rail it in, its still got to be cheaper than taking a cab the whole way. That or metro does a shuttle run from the rail to the airport.
  10. I know its big box retail, but I actually wouldn't mind seeing a Best buy move in here. The closest one right now is outside the loop by the Galleria. There is a Circuit City close to where the other Target already is. I just don't know how much room best buy would require (usually they are "parking lot for the world" violaters). Other than that, I was looking at the pictures from the Woodlands Water walk area and just hope we don't end up with the same movie back lot they did up there.
  11. I originally didn't know what you were talking about, but today's article in the chron cleared it up a little. The American Apparel that is also in Montrose is the same that has posters on the Saks building. However, from today's article, it sounds like AA Concepts, a Houston company, is talking to Wulfe about a ifestyle store in downtown - Wulfe owns the sakowitz building, 1+1=2... "They fulfill a niche a lot of landlords are looking for," said Monte Large, an urban broker with Wulfe & Co. who is working with AA Concepts on various properties, including one in downtown Houston that will house a lifestyle store, where customers can buy a variety of home products. 12. They already did once - the one at San felipe is inside the loop. However, i do get your point, you mean more inside the city than just close to the Galleria.
  13. And once again MiDTOWNeR creeps out to provide such great commentary on why the state of new jersey is really an underrated source of well spoken people and a jewel in the mind of people everywhere. That and also taking away the crown of most negative person from houstonsemipro.
  14. I actually saw Ryan out last night at Pub Fiction - still wearing that same shirt he was wearing on Good Day Houston. I was wondering if he thought he was performing at Magic Island later.
  15. Good call Midtown - that video was about as awful as it gets. I wish I would have just stared at the wall for a few minutes. Great shirt Ryan, I'm sure the ladies at Drink Houston eat it up. I was hoping Roula would have figured out a way to be less annoying since she's been on the air, but oh well. Seriously, is this really 3 people that the "public" wanted back on the air? Its all really just a marketing scam in the end. First Sam Malone "leaves", then magically pops back up on 96.5 Walton and Johnson get booted by a format change and then come back on another station that is basically KLOL. Roula and Ryan fired from KHMX, show up in Sam's old gig on KRBE. Only one out of the loop is Maria in the end. Here's the best answer - who cares? The radio is a joke - Rice radio could be ok if their DJ's didn't have ADD when it comes to records. Good indie rock song followed by sitar solos is not the kind of mix I'm looking for.
  16. So I'm 0-3 in the last couple of weeks on trying to get decent take out food around 9:30 PM Monday - Thursday. Some days, thats just the first chance I have to try and get food and don't always feel like cooking. Besides the standard Taco Cabana and fast food joints, what are some places in the loop you all like to hit up for take out food a little later at night
  17. I don't necessarily think it should be torn down, but some updates would be nice. I saw motorcyle diaries there last year and it was really uncomfortable to sit in there and I'm not a big person. It felt like it was a bunch of folding chairs while staring at a big screen TV from the 80's. Slight exagerration obviously, but I like the way it looks on the outside, just would like that if people care about it so much, it should be in better condition and modernized some. They tend to get indie movies there first, so I would like it to be a better experience.
  18. Does anyone know if Canton set up a temporary spot after they closed the strip center where they are located? That spot at Richmond and Kirby was in vast need of a remodeling, but it took away one of my favorite spots for Chinese. As for Fung's, I would imagine that on Sunday they do the push cart dim sum service, but on a weekday can understand why they wouldn't do it.
  19. I live in the warehouse area and I use cabs pretty frequently if I go out in midtown or downtown - its only like $6-7, depending on how many lights the cabbie hits. The only problem is usually getting picked up since they don't cruise that area to picking up, but they do hang around the bars pretty frequently. I usually just call yellow cab to get picked up and they usually are there within 15 minutes. Works out well.
  20. My sister was looking for a good, detailed book on how the city got settled, as well as how the 6 different wards came to be and progressed. Anyone have any good ones they know of?
  21. Looks like Scott Sparks is leaving too, going to 107.5. All the radio stations are a joke anyway, and probably second least to advertising, DJ's are not the reason I listen to the radio.
  22. Considering we have one crate and barrel in all of houston, i don't know if i believe there would be a need for another one that is 5 miles from the one in highland village.
  23. Looks like the next iteration is coming for this location. saw that it will be District 6 Grill soon. The District 7 Grill near me is always packed for lunch, hopefully the strength of that location will help it succeed in this spot. district7grill.com has the menu and some other information.
  24. I typically go to either 888 for quick, fast Chinese that is damn good or to Canton Seafood for more fancy dishes. 888 is very reasonably priced and good, I like getting the whole fish that is more than enough for 2 people. Canton has all kinds of stuff on their menu and even if its a seafood place, their duck is really good. Seafood Hot Pot in XO sauce, mmm, good.
