  1. I heard about Power of Houston. I regret that i never got the opportunity to see that. It's almost like it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Here's a pic or two from Power of Houston...

now THIS ONE is what I think Houston could look like on a regular basis at night...

    what do you think?

  2. i feel completely the opposite. Maybe its just me but i have had people to agree with me that Houston's skyline is mostly drab the way it is now at night. There are some buildings that do their part in lighting the skyline but some ruin the overall effect.

I find it quite offensive and frustrating when i visit some cities like Austin, Dallas, Philladelphia, Atlanta, and Chicago and they can light their buildings in a tasteful style, while many of Houston's buildings use the same ol' boring white christmas light scheme.

I would definitely like to see things change for a city like Houston. I do agree with you on the uptown skyline though, i love how that's lit up, but it's not centrally located like downtown and might run the risk of being missed by visitors coming into town.

    P.S. Welcome to the forum

Agree 100%, C2H. I'll give two more perfect example: Downtown Miami and Las Vegas. Lighting works, yo. And we got the skyline to do it. We looked great during Power of Houston, but if visiters saw what we saw during that time period, they'd be in awe.

  3. First off, to Lowbrow, I'm in the Army, and we all share our condolences to all lost that day.

Now, I LOVE this topic of lighting right here. I got three words for ya. Power of Houston. Remember that festival? Remember how the downtown buildings were lit up during those nights, how the spotlights were set up, and how everyone wanted to take pictures of our skyline? Why not have that same lighting every night? And if not every night, why nit set it up that way during big events like the International Festival, RodeoHouston, or the Super Bowl, when the whole can see us? (why did they only have those lights up when no one else but Houston could have admired it?)

  4. Is they talking about this on the Dome thread?

Respect to houstonsemipro. Bless your heart, yo. It was I that brought it up in the Dome thread, yo. I thought it'd be easier to create this question into it's own forum. Sorry to you and to all for the mix up. But I AM curious to the city's opinion on this, because I'm not sure if this question has been brought up before by the city officials.

To answer 27's question, I think the only reason why they had NFL Experience at GRB was to display downtown itself. Same reason for Hilton being the headquarters. Same for Main Event being on Main Street instead of Richmond Strip. Don't worry, 'cause I asked the same question at first around that time period. I think they did some other events in the Reliant Arena and Center.

That's where the question comes into play. IF the Dome hotel were made, and we still had the NFL Experience and the NFL headquarters downtown, wouldn't it come off as odd to those visiting us?

  5. lol.. I feel like I'm reading a transcript from da' Ali G show! :D

Booyakasha!! Me name be DJ V and me come straight from da WestSide of H-town, aaaiigghhttt?! MAD respect to 27 for the intellect! I must agree that I remind me for Ali G, except I'm black...and I'm Texan...and I..um..wear less Fubu. Recognize!

Also, 27 brought up the most valiant point as to why MLS would be successful here in da Bayou City. Diversity. It's what I love about Houston more than almost anything else. Professional soccer WILL be successful here, so long as that organization appeals to all, and not a particular target audience.

I got two questions. One, what's up with this trend going on in MLS with PROFESSIONAL teams signing on long term to play in High School Football stadiums? Dallas, exibit A. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but I'm trying to understand the strategy they have for making MLS as big an organization as the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and NASA. (hey, they build space ships, you know).

Also, Question Two: No disrespekt to da American Soccer announcers, but where's the excitement of watching the game on t.v.? I LOVE watching spanish stations for the games, 'cause the commentators get into it. GOOOOOOOOOOOLLLL!!!!! Where's our excitement when USA scores? If USA's announcers lose control, soccer has a great chance here. Does anyone agree?

    Oh, and Respect to Subdude!!

  6. If Reliant Astrodome was turned into that 1,000 room hotel and entertainment center like they've been proposing, would that help or hurt Houston showcasing the city during the Super Bowl? Hell, would the NFL Headquarters be held there, or at Hilton like last time? How would it effect the Super Bowl experience compared to 2004?

  7. I wonder if MLS is really going to be in expansion mode again as soon as 2007. They were eliminating teams as recently as 2002, right? It probably depends on how the two new teams do. As much as I would love to redo the Dome, isn't MLS holding out for promises of new soccer-specific fields (which is why Salt Lake City picked up an expansion team)? The Astrodome's just too big.

Yo check it. I agree the Astrodome is too big for MLS, but only if nothing was done to it. If a hotel/stadium deal happened, and the stadium still had more seats available than the average MLS stadium, AND it were state-of-the-art (we gotta stay ahead of the game with our archetecture, yo), then the size would be PERFECT.

All that would have to be done after that is one thing; fan support of the team, and create the largest fanbase for a local soccer team in America (which can be done). Houston loves PLAYING soccer, but watching it could become a sport in itself, which we've seen in almost all the other contries in the world. We Houstonians just have to learn how to enjoy attending games as much as we love to be playing it, and there's NO WAY we would lose money on the hotel/stadium idea.

    Oh, and 27 kicks ass.

  8. 27 ROCKS!!! GREAT idea. I'll go a step further: I think they should build a stadium/hotel in the same format as Detroit's Ford Field, Atlanta's Philips Arena, or Skydome. A minimum-42,000 to 47,000 seat facility would do (we'd have the opportunity to have the largest soccer specific stadium in America, since there's enough room for that.) This place would have all suites, press boxes, and hotel rooms on one side of the stadium, and could be used for conventions and concerts, as well as soccer.

This would be the most state-of-the-Art soccer facility in all North America. It would also be a $400 Million stadium project, because $400 million IS the amount that the Astrodome Redevelopment Corp. had promised to revitalize a hotel- primary Astrodome in the first place, right? What'd make it so successful would be the fact that it could be used 24/7 as a hotel, with the soccer partly used for advertisement for the facility. Yes, it'd be costly to play soccer in the dome, but with a steady attendance and a successful hotel, I think the dome could actually PROFIT.

Oh, and 27, I'm ALL for that Rodeo Houston idea. If that happened, they'd REALLY grow into something unprecedented. I nominate 27 to lead the way on it, too. That whole list kicked ass.

  9. If they do the hotel idea, they REALLY gotta spruce up the area around Reliant Park (Kirby, Old Spanish, etc.) More needs to be done by the city to revitalize that area to something similar to the Galleria Area. Why would ANYONE out of town wanna come and stay at a 1,000 room hotel if no conventions are going on, and there's nothing extraordinary around it. Oh, and Astroworld doesn't count yet. I NEVER hear that place compared to the other best theme parks in the country on a national level. THAT has done too (making Astroworld world class).

  10. If, IF, The Reliant Astrodome was turned into that 1,000 room hotel and entertainment center like they've been proposing, would that help or hurt Houston showcasing the city during the Super Bowl? Hell, would the NFL Headquarters be held there, or at Hilton like last time?
