    Private Sidewalk Repair Program Debuts

Council has authorized the creation of a privately-funded Sidewalk Repair, Replacement, and Installation Program that will be coordinated through the Public Works and Engineering Department. Sidewalk installation and/or maintenance is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. The new program allows individuals to utilize a City contractor at a fixed cost. Interested citizens may apply online and should copy the District C office for guidance (DistrictC@houstontx.gov).

  2. How is it possible to "Doze" an historic mansion in an historic district?  This house was moved to its current location in the early 1900's.  Parts of the movie Terms of Endearment were filmed there.

I did not see the signs myself, but was told by a neighbor.

Montrose is being redefined for $$.

I wonder about that "Doze" an historic mansion in an historic  district also-- The current owner of 204 Stratford  has just petitioned to be given  a variance to tear  it down

  3. Council Member Cohen and the Department of Public Works & Engineering invite you to an open house and presentation about the coming reconstruction of Greenbriar Street. The project will improve Greenbriar Street between Rice and W. Holcombe Boulevards.  Improvements will include new pavement, new underground utilities, wider sidewalks, and improved intersections for safer pedestrian crossing. The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 7th, 2015 from 6:00-7:30 at Roberts Elementary School.

  4. I found it interesting to view this thread in light of how the TV stations currently reference  criminal activity on Tuam west of Bagby as "Midtown".

I can see why there is confusion.

North of Tuam should be labeled Midtown. Looks like both sides of Tuam are within Montrose.

Taft, north of Fairview is the western boundary of Midtown. I guess my confusion came about as Avondale eastern boundary is Brazos which leads to spur as the eastern boundary of Montrose.

  5. Just this Thread-

Thirteen years later I know that when big disasters happen ---cell phone service is the first to go.

My kid was living in Columbia Graduate Student housing working at Lamont Doherty (future son-in-law was working at Solomon Smith Barney) when I got a call to watch the TV that the first building had fallen-- She would take a bus to work over GWB each day- All phone lines were $@#!. I just stayed by TV and kept trying to get through to her-- Finally my kid at OU got through and she was okay but stunned- She said she could smell it from her room on 112th-- I visited her  2 weeks later-- the entire island of Manhattan was covered in bouquets of rememberances at each Police and Fire station, everywhere you walked you saw them--pictures, flowers, teddy bears candles-- there are small stations everywhere--People would just stop in front of them and just stay a few moments then walk on.

There still was tiny bits of ash (?) that seemed to float when the wind got up.

That observation about cell phones-- it seemed true when I tried to contact my parents when they lived in OKC during the Federal Building Bombing--It was true while we were sitting out Katrina and folks tried to contact us and was true when I tried to contact another of my kids who was running in Boston Marathon two years ago and the bombing happened.  I wonder if technology will ever be able to overcome that.

This is actually in Montrose and across the street from FBar! I can't understand all the criminal action suddenly in that area. I've spent years listening to  PIP  HPD Central one Capt (4 different Captains in  10 years)  patiently explaining that my area Avondale gets a bad rap as far as crime goes. In the Crime stats that are passed out  each month the worst crime is BMV---what is going on?

  7. This past week, Very strange thing happened at Buffalo Bayou Park close to Steele dog park.

Grandkids from out of town (Manhattan) using scooters( kick plank scooter-non motorized-powered only by kid) The Park police tell my daughter that scooters are not allowed on bike path  or will be cited for violating ordinance but must to to skateboard/ rollarblade park----the three year old is just out of stroller stage and wouldn't be able to do much in skateboard park. The Policeman told us he would give us a break by not confiscating the kick plank scooter.

I tried to look up the ordinances-- but only found for "motorized" scooters----nothing about kick planks---- what's up with this? This is the first time I'm hearing that small kids scooters aren't allowed.

  8.  i would much rather have the texas history museum planned for downtown be in a renovated art deco building with a renovated texas mural.  it's right at a light rail station and closer to the museum district.  just a thought.  on the other hand, a renovated deco building with a forward thinking department store would serve the area nicely.

well if the old Sears store can't be used then maybe 3712 (i think) Fannin? The old Route 66 cafe that someone is renovating? When I went to the cafe 5 years so so ago-- it had a 2 story  opening in middle surrounded on 3 sides by balconies-- Sounds just right for museum.
