  1. I love the guys doffing their hats. A different era to be sure.
  2. Current picture of Water Works gateway to Buffalo Bayou, above the water cistern.
  3. Thinking about moving to an apartment complex in Katy called District at Westborough located at 1550 Westborough Dr. Anyone have any experience with the multifamily development? Thanks for your feedback.
  4. It looks like the connection work from Sesquicentennial Park to Allen's Landing has begun:
  5. Katy I'd probably go with the Galleria. I've always thought the Williams tower needed a partner.
  6. I walked by the park last week on my way to eat at Hearsay and it looked to be far from finished. They must have put in some late nights to get ready tomorrow's unveiling.
  7. Looking good. All I ask for Houston is one Supertall! Just one and I'll never ask again, promise.
  8. Forget about the Buffalo Bayou Master Plan, now we've got the Houston Bayou Greenway Initiative, a Master plan of Master plans, sort of speak: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7114095.html http://www.houstonparksboard.org/projects/bayou_greenways_initiative.php Estimated Cost: $500 Million Miles of new or upgraded hike-and-bike trails: 250 miles The gleam in Ed Wulfe's eyes: Priceless!
  9. You're touching on an important point. The medical center has a defined purpose and most of the development is the necessary expansion of existing facilities. Uptown Dallas is more speculative, based on a "build-it-and-they-will-come" mentality. To be sure, there is plenty of that type of thinking in Houston as well (e.g. Houston Pavillions). I would argue that the overall urbanity of the Medical Center has very little to do with it's importance to the city.
  10. I believe there was also a proposal for extending this trail south along the Bayou and potentially on to Memorial Park. It ran into some opposition and I'm not sure if that plan has been abandoned.
  11. Seems like Dallas would be a better fit for this show. Although the ratings would definitely be high if Osteen's wife were on it.
  12. I still say Camden Yards is the best ballpark in the majors, regardless of the Orioles deplorable performance over the last 15 years.
  13. I saw Lewis Black there back when it was on West Grey. I also took a defensive driving class there once and years later saw my instructor doing stand up on a Dane Cook special on Comedy Central. I'm sad to see it go.
  14. Yes, you are right! I read recently (I think it was in Popular Science) that something like 85% of the energy produced by an internal combustion engine is released as heat. Conversely, the situation is reversed with electric vehicles, with most of the energy being used to actually power the vehicle. So at the very least, the net effect of converting all cars to electric would be a massive gain in energy efficiency.
  15. A local artist had designed billboards meant to show you what you would see if the billboard wasn't there. Unfortunately, they will come down on Monday after being up for 30 days. http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/weird/091116_anti_billboards_artist
  16. Apparently, this new rivalry has a pretty crazy history: 2007 in Tulsa - Tulsa 56 Houston 7 2008 in Houston - Houston 70 Tulsa 30 (no, that's not a mistype) So apparently homefield advantage plays a big part in this based on the limited data points they have.

One can always refer to the works of Steinbeck, Zola (Germinal specifically) and Upton Sinclair to provide a counterbalance to Rand's philosophy. While equally dramatic, these works emphasize the consequences of unregulated capitalism and their impact on the less fortunate.
  18. That's a pretty slick looking design. I recently got to see Koolhaas' Seattle Public Library, and was fairly impressed with that as well. Has anyone read Delirious New York or any of his more recent writings? I'm curious if it's worth the effort.
  19. When is the demolition?

  20. Here's today's report: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=112939388 Among other topics, the Ashby highrise is discussed.
  21. Out of curiosity, is it typical for Morning Edition to broadcast from different cities? I've never noticed it before and was curious why they would decide to report from Houston. Houston seems to be getting a lot of attention during this economic downturn. It's like the media wants to get under the hood to see what makes this city tick. We're the city everyone loves to hate, and yet we're not plagued with many of the issues facing cities in the northeast and west coast: plummeting home values, stiffling regulation, shrinking economy.
