I'm not sure how many late-night restaurants could survive without bar traffic. Typical Houston Press garbage.
Agreed, 100%. I'm just hoping that the majority of the clientele isn't the same clientele that frequents places like Pub Fiction. If the folks from Leon's for example, or the Continental Club or Big Top make it over to Crave, on the other hand, that would be awesome. I'm an elitist asshole like that.

Technically not the Heights but the Heights area. Nicholson is the second street east of Shepherd.
Sweet. I am totally trying a sausage whatchamadoodlini this weekend.

Slightly askew of the topic, but if you haven't tried a piadini from Starbucks, you really should give it a shot. I don't know how widely available they are, but the Nicholson Starbucks carries them. It's sort of a turnover made with an herby flatbread. They offer two varieties: sausage and spinach/mushroom. Both have scrambled eggs and cheese. I haven't tried the spinach/mushroom, but I'm addicted to the sausage piadini. I think it runs about $3.50, and it's not a lot of food for the price, but it's a really unique taste experience.
There aren't any Starbucks in the Heights.
And where is Nicholson?
(not trying to be a jerk, just asking...)

We have one in Clear Lake. They have a very limited menu. The regular burger has two patties. You can add anything you want to it (grilled onions, mushrooms, etc.) for no charge. Their fries are better than sex! My sons and my hubby love the burgers. I go there for the fries!
Quote of the year. When is this place opening?!?!?

That robot looks friendly; the one to the west terrifies me. I've not even been out the new Katy Freeway for fear of it.
You aren't missing anything. Every morning as I drive towards it I think, "Maybe this is the day that I'll come to peace with the Decepticon." I can't ever truly like the Decepticon, of course, but I'm hoping that I'll eventually make peace with its evil presence. But so far that day has yet to come.

Here's a page of Heights breakfast spots, most of which have been mentioned above.
I'm still curious about Java Java, though, if anyone knows if it's closed. From what I can tell from internet searches, it was open as recently as a month or so ago - but, as I said above, I haven't seen it open in a while.
B4-U-Eat still lists it as open, and they're usually extremely vigilant about keeping their site updated:
http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurant...ews/rsv0968.asp
That said, the last review is from back in November. Anyone want to go play detective? Would that I could today...

Very nice looking on the inside. My wife and I can walk to your place from our house (I walk to Cali Sandwich all the time)...so I just now need to convince her to like Sushi
Heh. Start her off easy with hand rolls and other non-threatening items, just so she can get the gist of the flavors. Then start working your way into actual sushi (again, the easy stuff like ebi) and move up from there. That's what I had to do with my husband.
Also, for the rest of the thread, an article this morning on Crave at the Houston Press food blog:

Does anybody else think they are asking too much $$$ for these?
http://www.thebrownstonesatcitycentre.com/plans.html
I mean, it's the suburbs, next to a giant freeway interchange. I guess they have a lot of square footage? Am I missing something?
I've always felt that way: Room with a View
They're insane for asking that much for those townhomes. In. Sane.

All true, in fact it has alot to do with the one watching and perceives as flirting, for example: when meeting a person, then hug or kiss on the cheek another may see as flirting when in fact the person could be an old friend or relative. The viewer just doesnt know and assumes the person is wild and cannot contain themselves.
I hug and kiss nearly all of my friends when I first greet them and again when we're leaving. I'm also a terrible flirt. But for me, those two things have nothing to do with each other. Hugging and kissing as a form of greeting is nothing more to me than a handshake would be to other people. Interesting perspective, Vertigo... Do others feel that hugging and kissing when greeting/saying goodbye is flirtatious?
...in terms of being "unfaithful"... what do you consider to be unfaithful conduct? Some say that watching porn (and the activity associated with it) and not having sex with your partner is being "unfaithful"... does anyone agree with this premise?I suppose that depends on whether or not your partner condones or is aware of the porn viewing. If they know that you're watching Debbie Does Dallas every once in a while and they don't care, then I certainly wouldn't call that cheating. On the other hand, if all you're doing is viewing porn and it interferes with your normal sexual life with your spouse, then I would class that in the "unfaithful" category. And I think at that point, you've crossed over into "disorder" territory, as well.

You know sheeats, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
-
Oh, I did not know that. Many men spend too much time on porn at the expense of actual sex. I was married to one whose thing was Japanese anime-style porn, which was even creepier.
I'll see your anime porn and raise you clown porn. ...yeah. He was an odd, odd character.

wow, way to start a topic on a taboo subject.
Well, I don't discuss religion or politics in polite company (and this includes HAIF), ever. But I will discuss sex. Go figure.
-
NO...MUST...HOLD BACK...PERVERTED...SMARTASSEDNESS...
You're trying to get me banned from HAIF, aren't you!?
For the record, I think that it is a very real symptom of certain kinds of mental illnesses. And I think that it is manifested in different people to different degrees and in different ways so as that it is not always obvious in the context of social norms.
I admire your restraint, Niche.
I've seen sex addiction described as a symptom or manifestation of both Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. So perhaps you're right... I think I tend to agree with wernicke, though, that it's not an addiction, per se -- it's a disorder, or at least a symptom of one.
-
With poor David Duchovny all over the news these days due to his sex addiction, subsequent trip to rehab, and now his divorce, there seems to be a big divide over whether or not "sex addiction" is a real pathological disorder. It's not listed in the DSM, but there are still 12 Step groups devoted to it. Researchers don't seem to have a consensus either way.
What do y'all think?
Keep it clean, people...

i don't understand what you are suggesting. if you are trying to be funny, you failed in my opinion. the people that run this place are very cool. when i was buying my furniture i was very indecisive. they let me take pictures with my digital camera so I can take it home and ask my friends what they think. so, i'm pretty sure if Jax wanted to walk in there with his film crew and shoot a movie, he could.
You can afford to buy furniture there?!?!?!?!

Hear, hear!
The game last night was awesome. "See-saw" was right; one goal after another. I was sad to see my man Pat let four get by, but you have to think about how tired they must have all been (how many games in the past two weeks?) and how the altitude up in Mexico City was affecting them. And even with all that, they still got four goals.
Every time I see Kei Kamara approach the net, I think He's too nervous! He's not going to make it! And he's been proving me wrong every time lately. I'm really happy so far with him as an addition to the team.
I think that all around, we have an outstanding team, and that's what it's all about. Sure, Ching and DeRo and Barrett and Onstad are all great players on their own merits, but the entire team just works so fantastically together, like a well-oiled machine. And Kinnear, of course, is an amazing manager. His leadership is unequalled in Houston sports right now. Love, love, love my boys in orange!!!

Blue Roof program can't help with Spanish tile roofs like that... Only roofs that aren't rigid are eligible, since the tarps will be nailed/stapled to the existing roof.

Look. The only thing that sucks around these parts is the fact that Brennan's burned down and injured some good people.
You know I love y'all...

Posted an article and additional information about the fundraisers that Catalan and Del Frisco's are hosting for the Koonce family at Houstonist:
http://houstonist.com/2008/09/19/benefit_for_brennans.php
Del Frisco's is being especially generous, with 100% of the proceeds from their fundraiser going directly to the Koonce benefit account.

, my thoughts exactly. What about that tree trunk thing that is laying in the kitchen. This pic was before the hurricane.
Seriously. What is that???

A fund has been set up to help cover the cost of the hospital bills for James Koonce, the sommelier, and his little girl, Katherine, who were both very badly burned in the fire. Like most restaurant industry personnel, the Koonce family doesn't have health insurance. James is currently in critical condition; Katherine's condition is unknown. Here's the information about donating to the fund:
http://blog.cleverley.com/2008/09/17/benef...ans-fire-2.aspx
Carl Walker, the GM, was also badly injured in the fire. Several area restaurants will be holding fundraisers in the coming weeks to support the entire Brennan's family. According to Cleverley, both Catalan and Del Frisco will be hosting events. I'll post details as soon as I hear from her.
In better news, Shelby Hodge reported on Tuesday that Brennan's does plan to rebuild:

Keep the Brennan's folks in your prayers.

Why would someone hang a painting right above a stove?
That was my first thought, too! And then I realized the pictures were taken during an estate sale. I think they were just trying to get everything out on display to get it sold. ...can you imagine the fire hazard posed by a painting directly above a stove?

Anecdotally, I think lots fronting Memorial Drive there are a hard sell. My guess is unless someone buys the house to rehab it, it will eventually end up being a spec McMansion that will also take a long time to sell due to location.
ITA, especially the ones closer to the Beltway. That's a really tough location and the houses on that end aren't kept up at all. Anyone remember back in the day before the Beltway was built? Memorial Bend was an entirely different neighborhood back then...

This cute little house built in 1957 is on Memorial Drive, right across from Town & Country Village. Unfortunate that it's on such a busy street and that the owners haven't taken care of it at all, since both of those things mean that it will probably be demolished soon. In fact, there's already a giant David Weekly sign in the front yard: "Build on your own lot!" Someone will, I'm sure, since that's the popular thing to do in Memorial Bend (this house's neighborhood).

Any takers? It's a great neighborhood...

I prefer a crowd that's trying to score smack over a crowd that's trying to score. Much less Drakkar Noir and pageant makeup overall.
