  1. I hate the name Grand Texas Theme Park. Why does everything have to be Texas this, Texas that? Earthquest was more international and cosmopolitan. I'm tired of hearing Texas proud, Texas toast, Texas size, etc. Houston is already stereotyped as cowboys, country accents, and cattle. Houston is more diverse than that.

  2. This coming week's HBJ has an article about the Houston Ballet. They've purchased a full block downtown for a new headquarters. The block is located between Smith, Congress, Preston, and Louisiana. They sold half the block (Louisiana side) to help fund a new headquarter's building. No real info. was given about the size, but it did say a skybridge would connect the new building to the Wortham Theater. The rendering looks like a 13 to 14 story tower. More Filler is good news! Plus, if this is like their current West Gray location, it will house the ballet academy bringing further new life to downtown.

I hate it! It looksl like something that should have been built in the 80s in a Houston suburb. When is someone going to design something innovative and fresh for Houston. If this 80s box is only going to be 13 floors, they need to do better than this. If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. Maybe I ought to design the building.

  3. I hear this project is definately moving forward but has been scaled down to 60 stories and Morris Architects is working the project.

60 stories? I will believe it when I see it. I dont know why there is conversation about a building blocking the path of Transco's strobe light. Do you honestly think Houston will build something tall enough to block the path of the light.

  4. i agree, very stupid to build a lavish sales center to only for it to last a couple years. far more posh highrises were fine with movable structures with some sort of landscaping.

I hope this ugly boxy thing does not get built. Why couldnt they have designed something with the same sleekness as Transco tower? This high-rise looks like all the other boring boxes that have been built. Again, I hope the plan falls through.

  5. Now you know that Houston is not going to build an 80-story building. Its been decades since Houston has built something that tall. Houston is way too iffy. The tallest they may go is 40-something, and then again that's a rarity.

  6. Who said there would be three towers? Are you referring to the very first rendering that came out? -typical n00b :D

On their BLVD Place website, there is a rendering of 3 buildings. I understand that those highrises on the website are fillers or whatever they call them, but it gives the impression that there would be 3 buildings. Everything that I have read on BLVD Place said 3 buildings. On the website, it also said 500 residential units.

  7. Those are new pillars. The interesting thing is that the foundation they are being placed on is the old foundation from the Pavilion's basement level garage. They simply busted out squares of the old foundation and are building the pillars in those spots.

I drove by the BLVD Place construction sight the other day, and on the sign it read 400 residential units, instead of the mentioned 500 units. So either the 3 buildings will not be as tall as originally planned, or there will just be 2 highrises. I am not surprised at the scaling down - typical Houston.

  8. I was driving downtown along San Jac today when I noticed a large ugly concrete building somewhere between Jefferson and Pease with a fence around it and a Fentz construction sign. Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

I went to their website and this (http://www.fretzconstruction.com/portfolio/current/shcc.htm) looks slightly similar to the building with the fence around it. Are they turning that ugly building into some sort of church building?

I drove by BLVD Place construction site the other day and the sign read 400 residential units instead of the original 500 units.

With only 400 residential units instead of the planned 500, that means that either the 3 buildings with be shorter or there will be just two high rises. I am not surprised that it was scaled down - typical of Houston.
