  1. They light up at night and I think they're just decoration.
  2. Long ago, The Shops used to have these futuristic indoor fountains which I was horribly disappointed to see go away. Does anyone have pictures of them?
  3. The first demolition, and some shots of what will be York station.
  4. You rock. If I'm up early enough (I go to work at noon) I will go and snap some photos before stuff gets torn up on the first segment. Ripley's on Navigation and Sidney, near the old streetcar depot. Campus was rebuilt in the mid-90s. It's a miracle no one died when two acres of roof at Maximus went ker-plunk. I must remember to upload the photos I took. Little coffee envelopes were everywhere. Also got some images of the rebuilding.
  5. Everything on that stretch of Sampson/York is so... depressing. Cratered streets, two busy freight lines, spooky abandoned buildings, and sad little houses. Hopefully the future York station will attract some much-needed attention there.
  6. Lazy architects taking a visual cue from the stadium, I guess. A bit ironic that several genuinely old brick buildings were knocked over to make room for new buildings with 'retro' brick facades.
  7. This one? I have not seen a condemnation sign there, so I'm assuming Liu gave up part of his land across the street and that it's safe... for now. The Art Deco building DOES have a sign, sorry to say.
  8. Property clearance has begun on Harrisburg across from the coffee factory. I would have grabbed pics but I had a flat tire to fix before work.
  9. The area in question The other day I was driving around exploring the neighborhood near the old Jeff Davis Hospital. An errant turn took me onto Dart Street, which curves around, ducks under I-45, and becomes the tail end of Girard. I pulled into the dead end to find a few warehouse-looking buildings, and a man standing in front of them giving me a dirty look. Does anyone know what the heck is here, in the heart of the city but so isolated from it??
  10. If I'm still in my shoebox apartment on Harrisburg in four years, sure. Even if I move I'd like to stay as close to the line as possible. Hmm, this would give me an excuse to buy a shiny new camera...
  11. I saw an ad for these apartments once, really really cheap. But where the heck do you park if you live there?
  12. That's why Harrisburg will be widened. I'm all for it, if nothing else because otherwise the overpass over the train tracks will probably never be built. The 50 is practically useless as a bus route in part because it's stuck behind the damn train half the time. I live two miles from my job but have to drive or bike there because I never know if the 50 will get me to work five minutes early or twenty minutes late.
  13. Brown has been the color of choice on METRO's maps. I think it'd be perfect, ese.
  14. Let's get this show on the road. I was downright giddy seeing the orange spray paint all over Harrisburg this morning. The anxiety over the maintenance facility is much ado about nothing.
  15. Class of '98 Vanguard here. I had Yeargin and Hollinger and liked them both. Yeargin's English (or was it "Language Arts?") class wasn't bad. I loved his lessons on The Crucible, book and movie. He covered the bare butts with a manila folder to protect our innocent minds. The real fun was "Enrichment" class, basically an empty spot in everyone's schedule that he just let be a free for all. Spent a lot of time playing Road Rash! on the Macintosh. I liked Hollinger's emphasis on notes when I had him for Physical Science. Got me into the note-taking habit, which served me well all the way through college. Say what you will but more of his class stuck with me than the ostensibly more advanced science classes I took years later. We did "Operation Egg Drop" near the end of the year, tossing eggs off the third floor staircase window in protective casings we designed. My egg in a modified Downy ball survived mostly intact. I had Ms. Cole for sixth-grade PE. It was the next year, I believe, that she got married. "Wait, to a MAN?" was one girl's response. Future congressional candidate Jim Henley was my social studies teacher and also ran the Ecology club. We watched the OJ verdict in his class. Didn't see too much of him after sixth grade considering his sister's legal troubles at the time. Other memories: Walter Cronkite visiting for the big 70th anniversary party in '96, and his historical significance being totally lost on my peers. A girl named Crystal being nearly killed when her school bus was shot up on Halloween. The debut of Lanier's first website, which was on Rice's domain and pretty much the first school website in town. White boys moshing to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at the 8th-grade dance while the minority kids stood around befuddled. Splattering modeling clay on the ceiling in Ms. Dickey's art class. Bus ride through the heart of Montrose every morning and afternoon. Mr. Monaghan took over after Lanclos left in '99 or 2000. He got hairplugs on Eyewitness News.
  16. Also, all but two of the saint-named streets south of Harrisburg and east of Milby have been renamed. Only St. Augustine and St. Joseph remain, despite the coming of St. Joseph Parkway downtown.
  17. I had no idea tiny dogs were so popular, judging from which side of the dog run was packed last night.
  18. Aah, a bit higher resolution and I'd have a new wallpaper.
  19. Resale shop, I think?? I'll have to ask my father.
  20. I took my Profession of Faith there as a seven year-old during the church's last days. Now it's Eastwood Academy, and remains on 1315 Dumble. They've bought up the empty lot on Dumble for future expansion. My first time in that building in 17 years was to vote last year!
