  1. I don't think the laissez faire, bohemian attitudes were meant to attract big box suburban retailers to the area. And the arbitrary geographical distinction is the worst argument I have heard, second only to the elitist/racist one. So what if it isn't in within the plat for the heights as recorded in the Harris County real property records. And if you are so laissez faire, bohemian, you would equally support people's rights to speak out against what they consider to be a nuisance and detriment to their community. But you are not really Mr. Heights laissez faire/bohemain. You are just another right wing conservative who favors the rights of giant corporations to suck money out of a community over the right of the community to have some influence over the quality of life in their area.

Could we have a HAIF / Swamplot crossover and this can be the comment of the day?

  2. There's the the Boom Boom Room on Yale, and isn't Jus Mac selling beer and wine? I think the problem with trying to determine the wet/dry line by looking at what business are selling alcohol is that there aren't many places that would sell alcohol north of 19th and btw Shepherd and Yale in the first place. But surely the Kroger on 20th would be selling beer and wine now if they could(?). I doubt they would wait for a remodel for that.

  3. No one said anything about not being able to freely express yourself on this board. However, it is considered a common courtesy to those who start threads to stay on topic instead of rudely hijacking them, especially with unrelated, touchy subjects.

On another note, doesn't this particular subject regarding a lack of restaurant diversity in the Heights seem rather quaint now?

  4. I'm sick and tired of all of the PC folks who think we need to walk on pins and needles about this topic.

Maybe you are referring to people in general being PC about this topic, but i think the reaction here, in particular, is more one of confusion on how the thread "CHRON: FEMALE HEIGHTS JOGGER SEXUALLY ASSUALTED" became "CHRON: SOME RANDOM HISPANIC GUY SEXUALLY ASSAULTS FEMALE HEIGHTS JOGGER AND BECOMES POSTER BOY FOR ALL THINGS RELATED TO IMMIGRATION". Isn't there a Misc. forum around here for that sort of thing?

  5. To add to what Niche said about people staying: I think you have a lot more people owning property in the Washington area as opposed to renting in Midtown. Along with all the restaurants, I just see this area maturing differently than MIdtown. People might eventually stop coming here from far away and the "exclusive" clubs will move on to the next hot area, but there are enough local residents (including directly north of I-10) to keep a lot of the places going.

  6. Revival has already established itself by supplying a number of well regarded restaurants and, to a lesser extent, to the public at the Eastside Farmer's Market. This seems to me to be a natural progression in expanding their business to the public. To Kylejack's point, i think they have a much better chance if they remain focused on the meats and having anything else be incidental to that.

  7. And what's the deal w/ the crotch rocket motorcycles? Last night around 11pm it sounded like a hive of bees was going crazy down by I-10.

    Cheers

    James

I'm closer to White Oak on Oxford and could hear them clearly, too. I can say, though, that I previously lived a block off 59 at Woodhead and the there is much, much more motorcycle activity over there than on I-10. I certainly don't notice them nightly here.

As to current helicopter activity, it's thankfully quiet at the moment. I've noticed a couple hovering in the area over the past couple months but more common are semi-frequent flyovers during the day. I'm not sure where they are headed ... maybe traffic copters en route to some I-45 traffic jam. I've also noticed military copters flying over.

  8. And in other news, something appears to be going on at the building on the corner of White Oak at Oxford with the "soul food coming soon" sign (also known as extra parking for Onion Creek). To the latter point, my understanding is that the owners of the Creek properties do own this place. In the last couple weeks, the place has been tented for pest control, and there is a large dumpster out back for construction-related trash. I don't think that soul food will actually be coming there any time soon, but please post if you know something.

  9. OK, to hell with Wally World coming to the hood.... Here's some exciting news.

    Courtesy of MyTable:

"In the world of locally raised and produced food, today's big news is that chef Ryan Pera has left The Grove to join Morgan Weber of Revival Meats to open Revival Market in the old McCain's Market location at 550 Heights Blvd. The guys will source and sell locally raised meats, prepare charcuterie (including fresh and cured sausages, pate and confits) and make and sell their own condiments. Need a sandwich? Revival Market will feature a deli (breads by Slow Dough Bread Co.), and there will also be ready-to-eat foods for carry-out. Pera says the shop should be open by the end of the year. All we can say is, wish it were in our neighborhood."

  10. A little surprising that traffic on northbound Yale was that high, since the only way onto it is from Washington (westbound) and Center St. I tend to only take it to avoid trains on Heights.

It's not protected, but you can actually turn left on to Yale from Washington eastbound. While you may only tend to take it to avoid the trains on Heights, I always take it to avoid the trains since there's sure to be one when i get there :D
