  1. The kids today actually like records. They get out these disc jockey set ups and make music with old records. The kids love to plunge through old records to find sounds, beats, chords, meldoies etc. to use when they disc jockey (the kids call it "DJ"-ing). They can actually come up with dance tracks in real time using old records.

    Thanks for this; i needed a good laugh today.

    Without reading the links - Vinyl is a fad - its nostalgic for old folks, and the kids "DJing" could not possibly keep a store in business. I predict that the store does not even last one year unless it makes all its money on EBAY in which case what is the point of the storefront. Modern people are lazy and do not wish to carry around or store anything that takes up space...they use iphones, ipods, and the cloud now....vinyl is dead and the few people who collect or play them are a far cry for what it will take to keep a store in the heights in business...they see old homes and antique stores and they see their clientele - but despite the look of the heights from the curb - inside the homes its all flat panel tv and iphones....

    Sound Ex makes most of its income from Ebay sales, but what's wrong with having a storefront where they can also interact with local customers? And while I can't speak for the owner of this new place, do you think he was naive enough to choose this spot just because there are old homes and antique stores in the neighborhood? Maybe you'd have a point if he was only going to stock big band standards... I personally don't buy much vinyl because it is expensive (think upwards to $20/album for the new stuff i listen to) and because it doesn't fit my lifestyle (at a computer most of the day), but i know a lot of people who do frequently plunk down the cash for it. It'll never be big, but it will likely stay around long after cassettes and CDs go the way of the 8 track (yeah even cassettes have seen a faddish mini-resurgence of late).

  2. I figured that the upcoming Sundance Cinemas that is replacing the old Angelika should get its own thread .... I received an email from Rob Arcos the other day that he recently joined on as manager for the new venue going in. He is the former manager for the Houston Landmark Theatres and owner of the late Movies! The Store. I expect some interesting things to show with him on board and am pretty excited with his involvement.

  3. Sawbuck realty has a good app, too. I find their regular site much more useful than HAR's site since it shows the listing history of a house, including price drops/increases, relisting, etc.

  4. Regarding the Onion Creek burger, they will now only serve them on Thursdays. When my wife found this out recently on one of the new off nights and went to Dry Creek instead, she was informed that on weekends and busy nights, the OC burgers actually came from Dry Creek where they were cooked to medium and transferred to OC to be finished off.

  5. It was only through sheer resolve and the desire to sleep that i didn't go outside and throw rocks at that #$%@@#$ helicopter. After hearing it for an hour, I felt like it was low enough that I might have been able to hit it with at least one rock.

    On the plus side, at least they use some sort of night vision rather than a spot light.

  6. Went to Frosted Betty and had an Almond Ricotta Raspberry cupcake, it was pretty dang tasty. I look forward to trying the Maple Bacon cupcake soon.

    And I'll second you on Happy Fatz .... I liked the mini-cheesecakes (although my wife had a regular slice and thought it was generic). But we got a sampler of mini-cupcakes this weekend, and they were great. We both hate when places go overboard on the frosting, and we felt they used the right amount. Hotdogs are next on our list.....

The new location will have a casual neighborhood vibe, much like Sonoma’s Richmond location. Owners Farrah Fatouretchi and Dr. Kevin Lisman have some unique design features planned for the new project and report that it will have a larger kitchen and an increased focus on food. The planned opening is April 2012."

    I've been there once and it was OK, but I have to admit that 13 Celsius has set the standard really high for wine bars (just as Catalina has for coffee). Still, i have no complaints about a local wine bar if they use proper stemware (see, i am spoiled).

  8. I always got the Kung Pao Chicken, and its significantly different now.

    Update: my wife told me today that she ordered from Dragon Bowl last week while i was out of town and announced "Dragon Bowl is dead to me". Exact words there .... So, maybe they were still in the process of screwing up updating the menu when i went. It's a shame but really if i want sushi, I head over to Sushi Tora, anyway.

  9. Im also not sure they still have sushi, I certainly havent seen the sushi chef in his spot anymore the last couple times I went (the last times I'll be goiong in a long while)

    I went there after the "reboot" and asked about sushi since it wasn't on the menu any longer, and they said they still have it. Why they took it off the menu is beyond me. Their "build your own bowls" menu is the same and doesn't taste any different (that's what i normally get), but i admit that I was certainly expecting more when i read about the changes that were coming.

  10. Hbcu, allow me to refer you back to the subject of this thread which concerns the building of the Carnegie school. By all means start a new thread to discuss the displacement of low income residents by developers, etc, etc, but I still have yet to see a compelling argument that the school is acting in this capacity. Reading through the number of rebuttals here, it seems clear that Carnegie is a late-comer to the gentrification of this neighborhood (contributing to it, sure, but not the catalyst). So to be clear, is your discussion about the general gentrification of the 4th Ward and the displacement of the older, low income residents or is it about Carnegie's role in all this?

  11. Any mathematicians around to hash this out? Bacon improves food by X. Revival's bacon is Y times better than normal bacon. A cupcake wrapped in bacon (or however else SilverJK likes his paired :blink:) is Z times better than with other bacon or N times better than the food by itself?

    In all seriousness--and bacon is serious business--it is certainly the best i've had.

  12. I'm sure my bimonthly bacon purchase is insignificant in the scheme of things... but the fact that I have a plan to go by there at least twice a month just for thick cut awesome swine strips is a pretty good sign I'd think.

    Anyone try the lamb? looked freaking amazing.

    I picked up a leg of lamb on Sunday for an Italian stew. When i say leg of lamb, we're talking about 2 feet of leg bone on that sucker. They were kind enough to debone it for me, though. I saved a couple pieces of the lamb before putting it in to the stew, and it was excellent.

    FYI, they will also grind your meat to order. It would be a pretty expensive make at home burger, but some made from one of their ground ribeyes would be fantastic.
