  1. Well if you can settle for a town home, there are tons south of i-10 zoned to MHS in a great community called Ethans Glen. The address is anything off of Litchfield. You can even go for bigger in a gated community called Woodstone. The address for Woodstone is 201 Vanderpool

  2. Ive had a few friends live here over the years. It is a GREAT place for the price! Let me repeat, for the price. Maybe a little light on the Yuppie clientele but you can't beat the location (if you work in the Energy Corridor), the schools (you can apply to SBISD from here), and the park (Terry Hershey is at your front door!!!). I've noticed over the years though, that the units are changing hands and much updating is being done by the previous or new landlords, so prices may be rising. But due to its location and proximity to local amenities (walking distance to the new Kendall branch library now) I can't see why more people don't live here.

  3. I think the tower and the urban townhomes will work out great together when complete. I like that it seems out of place to some people, while I think its a excellent combination of architecture.

Just take a look, this Modern building proposed in NYC thats out-of-place with its surrondings.

    Awesome!

Wow. That is by far the ugliest thing I have ever seen. It nearly compares to our Federal Reserve building

  4. I also posted this in the North Houston forum:

I researched and my cousin owns 22 acres in Shannon Owen in North Houston. Since he is no longer with us, I am tasked with finding this place. Yet the Montgomery County Appraisal District only gives me the Lot and Section numbers - no map or address. Is there another way I can find this property?

Legal Description: A0036 SHANNON OWEN, TRACT 24 PT, 39, ACRES 21.970

    Acreage: 21.970

  6. I'm coming in somewhat overbudget on my project (for which 100% of additional costs are out-of-pocket) and so my most recent budget forecasts indicate that I will be coming up on the point of desperation in about the next month or so. And I don't care what the politicians or government numbers are saying about things starting to get better, as I haven't gotten one single response in the last month even though I've not only expanded my job search to San Antonio and Austin but also sent out about three dozen applications with individually customized cover letters in that time frame.

My network of professional contacts has been decimated. There is no real estate industry to speak of at my experience level. I'm engaged in a career change out of necessity, yet have too much experience to be taken seriously for entry-level positions and there is too much competition for experienced positions...especially from out-of-state job seekers. Explaining these circumstances tactfully in cover letters isn't apparently making up for it, either.

I've already got a couple of folks from HAIF keeping an eye out for me, but anybody else who may be in a position to help out would be greatly appreciated. ESPECIALLY if you've got employee access to a corporate database of jobs that I can't see on the public side and can hook me up. Or ESPECIALLY if you can let me reference you on the job application.

As fellow Houstonians, surely you can sympathize and pity the fact that the only offer I've had for employment is in Dallas, for a quasi-nepotistic poorly-paying position in the legal services field. I implore you not to let such a move occur if you're at all able.

I was in the same league as you. I was searching for a position from Spring 2007 to early this year. I graduated with a degree in Finance - so we're basically in the same boat of difficulty. I found the most apt way to get an interview is to call a firm asking for an 'informational interview.' This is just going to a firm and selling yourself without an underlying job available. The reasoning behind this is so that when the market picks back up again you're a face rather than just a piece of paper.

To get an interview or these informational interviews, you cannot just call up the firm but have to get an email or contact phone of the person you want to talk to. Say you dont know anyone at the firm (I didnt - Im 24, my main business contacts are still in college. haha), google them. In my case, I was searching for an energy trading position, so I would google 'head of power trading BP houston.' No matter what the search will result in an email of a person to where you can send your resume. Also dont be fearful of sending your resume to personal emails because the guys love it. They love initiative. Also from this person may belong to a group, board, or went a conference one time where he/she had to give out their contact info, so in addition google the person and a whole bunch of other names will come up. In my case, the emails and numbers for everyone at an NERG conference came up. I just took the list and emailed them all. I have a job because of this. I have a job because I wasn't sitting on my ass trolling Careerbuilder all day. So start hustlin'

Also, in addition, contact a recruiter. Robert Half, Donnovan Watkins, Manhattan Resources, and Mackey & Tanner are few in town. There is one other recruiter who is incredible but PM me if you want that one.

If RE isn't fitting start using the analytics of your Finance and Economic backgrounds - search in the Med Center, Energy, Financials, etc for Analytic positions (titles such as Research, Market, Financial, Investment, and Equity Analyst). If all else fails State Farm is always looking for insurance salesmen.

  7. hey bring on massive debt. Another 18 bil on top of the 820 bil is not that much. I assume government spending seeing how no private company can run a commuter train in the US.

UST accepts public funds. But I was only using UST as an example for how higher education is a form of infrastructure. The universal 'we' is perhaps best used to describe someone (me) who does not know the semantics or politicking it takes to build rail. So we should focus on Houston/Galveston before we should undertake a project as costly as an intermediate form of travel..high speed rail.

Also you cant have high speed service in the US because in early 70s a law was enacted to cap train speeds at 69 mph. Reverse the law then we may begin talk about high speed.

Finally do not make asinine remarks about posts. Its unbecoming of the forum.

  8. Why does it have to be high speed? Why not just regular 80 mph rail? Does a few minutes each way really affect us that much?

There is already a train that does 70 every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday that goes to San Antonio. Doesnt the other train that does 70 start in Lufkin or something and goes to Dallas?

Flight is cheaper and easier. Use $18 billion to fix city infrastructure problems. Rail in Houston. Rail to Galveston. Maybe blanket high speed wireless internet? Maybe more funding for UH and UST schools. Tuition credits? Tax breaks? If we were given $18 billion is it best spent on high speed rail?

What is so wrong with a bus?

  9. if you want great gumbo (seafood n reg) the best place I have EVER had it is in the Chronicle building downtown.

they only serve the gumbo on Wednesday afternoons and always a line out the door. I guess most dont know about it but its amazing!

try that and their cornbread and youll be in heaven.

  10. With the older buildings you run into a very high monthly maintenance fee. I think Four Leaf runs over 40 cents a sq ft. The best ones in my opinion without money being an option -- The Huntingdon hands down. The monthlies are awful though.

Other than that anything by Interfin or Randall Davis. Four Leaf, Villa d Este, Montebello, Manhattan, Empire, or the Cosmopolitan.

Also been a sucker for the Houstonian. All the luxuries of the hotel at your finger tips and included in the fee.

Looking to save green go to the Campton at Post Oak. Great units and cheaper per month.

Other than this I have been to the Bristol and it is great. A lot of foreclosures in there though. You wonder if the maintenance fee will be hit because of no one paying it. Maybe theyll fire the valet.

  11. That's strange. I guess they phased in the change with two years below me, because I was at MCJH in 1996. Either way, it's all switched over now. I agree that the area should probably go to Stratford, but that will never happen because of the tax dollars at stake. I don't see Katy ISD ever building a JH/HS next to wolfe because they don't own all of that land. They own the fenced in area, which is large, but not large enough for a high school. The area outside the fence is actually a park which is not owned by KISD. The population of the area is not increasing enough to put a neighborhood there. If they did, it would be mostly populated by those apartments north of I-10 and Bear Creek, which both currently feed into MCHS.

Fleetwood II's wall (south side) was hit by two cars and the city said the whole thing had to be replaced instead of just fixing the part that fell down. They are currently in the process of replacing it and should be done within the month. I don't know what Fleetwood pays for HOA, but Fleetwood West pays $300. Although one of the major reasons Fleetwood probably doesn't have as high a HOA fee is that BL has a swimming pool and tennis courts to maintain.

As for as becoming gated, I just don't see how it would work. BL has those two commercial properties that are partially within the neighborhood, I don't see how you would go about gating the back entrances without gating in those buildings. They could go with something like Memorial Thicket has with the guy in front that waives to everyone, but I'm not sure how that is any better than what Fleetwood and BL have now with the guy that drives around all the time. If BL somehow does go gated, I would suspect Fleetwood would do the same.

Katy ISD owns the entire area up to the ditch on Grisby (where the power lines/Grisby Grill). They own all the frontage on Hwy 6 as well. I was eluding to a joint JH/HS option but like I said it would likely not happen because the school would not be 5A.

I understand BL cant be gated because of the office buildings in back of the neighborhood. What I would propose would be a guard gate option at all the entrances. Something kind of like how you have to swipe a card for the arm to open. In this instance the people working in those buildings can get in and out while those that cut through BL cannot. Along with this a manned gate at the front with the same types of arms or whatever would work well.

We cant gate in the area because it would be too expensive to buy back the streets from the city. BL and Fleetwood are too large of neighborhoods.

It just depends on what neighborhood wants. I think there are options but the best bet to contend with drivers racing through the neighborhood after work would be road humps placed along the main corridors. It is the most economical plan.

  12. Memorial City Mall also had Exilarama (spell?). It was located i think where the arcade is now. The food court was alot smaller then. It seemed like Exilarama went on forever inthe back. It had lazer tag, carnival rides, and games galore. I also remember way back by the entrence to where target is now, that there was some sort of poster store that sold all kinds of band merchendise. I remember buying some kind of black light poster and some t-shirts. This would have been around '96 or '97. I would drive to the mall when i had my own car. I also remember the wing with the Hot Topic now used to seem alot smaller and more narrow. I also remember the '80s neon that was everywhere in the mall including the designs that hung from the ceiling.

I believe the store that sold posters was Rock n Roll Plus. Amazing store.

I remember when Media Play and Mars. At either of those you could try out any guitar you wanted. Sweet.

  13. The switch to Taylor and MPJH occurred in 1996. I was in 6th grade at the time and attending Mayde Creek, the switch happened, and we were rezoned to Memorial Parkway (MPJH) and Taylor HS.

I still believe that we should be attending Stratford since it is so much closer. There is that huge lot next to Wolfe that they should just build a mix use junior high/high school. It probably wouldnt be 5A but that would be the only hiccup. There is support nowadays for the number of children since more of the older generation is moving out of neighborhoods. It looks as though if the trend continues the area will surpass what it is now.

Also I was told that the brick walls along Memorial that house both Fleetwood neighborhoods will be replaced with new ones. This is kind of like how the walls on Memorial housing the Wilchester neighborhoods were replaced.

The only thing I hope for is that Fleetwood neighborhoods finally raise their neighborhood dues. The area cannot support $4-500 a year. In BL we were paying $925 and I think now it is even higher. Memorial Thicket pays upwards to $1500.

BL will hopefully be gated too to contend with the added traffic from the BP expansion or will have a guard gate option at the entrances.

  14. someone told me that when beltway 8 was completed (circa 87?) on the night or weekend it was finished the city threw a big party on the freeway and huey lewis and the news played. does anybody remember this?

I only bring this up because first it had to be awesome, and second I just saw huey lewis on a capitol fourth. still rockin.

  15. Yea that would be my biggest deal breaker. You would have to go private or try to get a small apt in the spring branch isd for rent after elementary. Just use the address for zoning. One of my friends did this but its a bit far to go to put your kids in public school.

Grasshopper Square is behind BL on grisby and addicks howell. Great area. The info about the expansion is on the BP website I believe. I dont have the URL offhand. But you can find related info on the BL website.

    http://www.barkerslanding.org

  16. Getting down to it anything west of the beltway is not really Memorial. This is what any resident who of the area will tell you. So BL is just as much a part of memorial as any other neighborhood.

As for traffic on Memorial at Eldridge its not that bad. I lived there for 20 yrs. Basically at peak traffic times (5-6) you're already either in your house or if you have to go east on Memorial from your front door to eldridge probably will take you 10 min on average. You're not goin to hit this bc you're goin back to your house at this time and there's no traffic heading west on memorial (except sometimes at kirkwood).

when coming from the park n ride to BL at rush hour it takes me about 5 min. Also the other direction in the morning. Since all you take is the turn around at the freeway and then the entrance at addicks howell off the feeder.

Something the areas east of eldridge dont have access to is grasshopper square. This is a small grove of different restaurants and bars which give a great small town feel. I've always compared it to much less commercialized kemah boardwalk.

With the expansion of BP too comes a town center that will be built off the road behind BL. The reason these areas haven't appreciated as much is because of the school zoning. But now since its proxmity to the Energy Corridor the housing values have shot up.

  17. I lived in Barkers Landing from 1988-2008. Grew up there. I went from elementary through high school to Katy ISD schools. Wolfe and Katy ISD is what that area is zoned to (that area being west of Eldridge). Barkers was a great neighborhood but the only bad thing was that when I entered junior high I was bused like 30 min into Katy for school. That was awful. Good schools but bad commute.

I can go on about the fact that the area should be in Spring Branch ISD but anymore so I believe most of the kids after Wolfe are put into private school.

Also yes there is a park n ride at Hwy 6 and i-10. Its north of the freeway next to the tall hotel building.

Anything east of Eldridge is better suit for people who want kids in public schools or dont want to bus them in the other direction. If Katedidit sees the post she knows an extravagant amount about this area.

Here are some of the homes in the area (Single Family, 4+ bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, under 350k)
