My negative comments about Mingalone have been deleted on that site. I don't think it paints a very accurate picture.

Do not go to Mingalone downtown. Those guys are jerks.

Terrible food. Terrible waiters. A waiter even followed me to a parking garage demanding more tip.

apart from downtown, parts of the heights (near heights blvd), the village and parts of montrose, houston really has no true walkable urban areas. i live in uptown and i find it anything but urban.

I agree. Its more like a suburban office park.

When compared to cities like Boston, Uptown is very suburban.

Uptown Houston seems like a whole city in itself from downtown Houston.

In a way, Irving is to Dallas as Uptown Houston is to downtown Houston.

Geographically and demographically, to combine municipal Dallas, Irving and Fort Worth, the result would be a city comparable in area, with a greater population and about the same number of 12+ story buildings. I do think in the future, Dallas and Tarrant county cities will be forced to establish some sort of communal organization (beyond NCTCOG) with effective decision making authority to bring to the metroplex a regional government, eliminating some reduntant inefficient municipal actions - comparable to what Houstonians enjoy through a city govt which impacts the whole metro.

It's fun to play around with stuff like this. Even more fun for me, is to work from the "Texas - it's a whole different country" point of view and compare Texas to other countries and regional blocks of US states.

You're absolutely right, tamtagon. But beware, I've said the same thing before and I was blasted for it.

Las Colinas is very similar to Uptown Houston. Both are suburban office complexes. Uptown Houston has bigger buildings, but a similar feel to Las Colinas.

Las Colinas of course has a mass transit monorail and a canal with shops and retail -- so Las Colinas actually might be a little more progressive.

Houston also has those red London telephone boxes going up Kirby Drive.

Dallas is trying to become "world class." Developers are modeling their plans after other "world class cities." Dallas is not NYC. It's Dallas. But they're trying to make their downtown similar to the most successful of all downtowns in the United States. There's nothing wrong with shooting for the top.

Have you noticed that the only people saying that "Dallas is the Manhattan of the Southwest" are people from HOUSTON.

Developers from Dallas are putting billboards up that are giant TV screens. There are advertisements like this in New York City, Tokyo, and London. So Tokyo and London were just "trying to be like New York City?"

Dallas developers and advertisers are making something that Texas has never seen before. Let's not be jackasses about it.

Well its true if you read the newspaper, or watch the news. It tells you. Besides, the woodlands has been ranked with international cities, that's how popular the woodlands is today.

Go to Switzerland. When they ask when you're from, don't say Houston or Texas. Say, "The Woodlands." They'll just think you're from the Black Forrest in Germany. The Woodlands is not an international city.

The Woodlands is a noveou riche suburb. And as such, its head is inflated. The Woodlands is a fine town, but its not Rome or New York City.

Since skyscrapers weren't invented in Houston, nor were roads, we were obviously trying to "be like someone else."

Let's tear them all down and just go back to log cabins and the horses that we began with. Then we can be real to our Houston roots.

Houston has the most prestiages neighborhoods in texas, and the #1 top community... the woodlands. They also trying to build other communities like the woodlands.
