My PO Box is out that way, and I always drive back past the old building. It's currently half torn down.

Someone here had offered to fly a drone and get some video that way whenever it was being torn down, I don't have their info though.

The laundry room still had rented laundry machines in it. Bet they're super happy about that.

Also, what the hell is "2220 1/2 Westcreek Ln."? The building's address is 2220 Westcreek Lane. Always has been. Even the new buildng isn't going to be at some "1/2" address. I'd guess either 2220 or 2222.

Good job letting the building rot there for, what, over 2 friggin years? You got no rent from me or anyone else. How much did all those guards cost, to protect an empty fricking building?

I do not miss the traffic. You don't have a snowball's chance in hell of going anywhere at 5 PM.

One Swain & Houck building remains. http://www.thegeorgianapts.com That's because they still own it. (or, their estate, or whatever, they're both dead I'm sure)

    Owner Name &
    Mailing Address:
    SWAIN & HOUCK
    8811 WESTHEIMER RD STE 208
    HOUSTON TX 77063-3617

What is causing the hostility toward this high rise? Is there no street level retail? I can not tell from the drawings.  Or is this some sort of Ashby highrise based hostility?  It is not near the River Oaks theater so how did that get into the discussion? It just seems to occupy a corner near Krogers.

If I was in control of RO shopping center I would consider demolishing all of it now to preempt any political interference with their control of the property and their right to decide what the best use of their property is.

CI just received this email notice a few minutes ago. So I guess there will be a fight for this project getting off the ground.

After rereading this I think they should have re read it also because they really botched the last couple of sentences..

Weingarten's Realty is planning on doing some major construction and renovation to parts of the historic River Oaks Shopping Center. They will be submitting their request before the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission at a June 15th meeting. THE HAHC meeting is open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. in council chambers on the ground floor of City Hall Annex, 900 Bagby Street. Anyone wishing to address HAHC must sign in before 3 p.m. If you are concerned about the preserving this neighborhood landmark that features of one of the few remaining examples art deco style architecture in Houston, please considering attending this meeting. You may also want to express your concerns to city Councilman Ellen Cohen, and Councilman-at-Large David Robinson. This is the link to additional information published on the Houston Preservation website http://mailchi.mp/preservationhouston/discover-rice-universitys-distinctive-architecture-this-sunday-evening-721053?e=0836c09fb4

I live very close to this site. I walk to the midnight showings at River Oaks Theatre and Braissire 19. I'm all for them demolishing all of it, RO Theatre included, just to piss of people who try to tell property owners what they can do with their property. Anyone want to start a protest to call for RO theatre to be demolished? I'll picket out front with you.

At some level it's comfort food. Pappasitos is what a lot of Houstonians grew up knowing is good texmex, and specifically, good fajitas.

Personally, I have an irrational love of Los Tios. This was one of the only texmex restaurant that my parents went to as I was really young. I don't think their salsa recipe has changed in 40 years, I can go in and taste the salsa, and I'm 5 years old eating chips and salsa in a corner booth with their weird half moon windows. the other Mexican place we went with any regularity was that fajita place in the Corillion, they had that workstation in the middle of the restaurant with the 3 ladies making the tortillas fresh. I can't remember the name of it, but my parents would get coupons for that place and we'd go once a month or so. I wish I could remember the name of that place, it was a clever name, I seem to remember, and any time we ever went it was always packed.

Anyway, I agree with you, I didn't grow up eating at Pappasito's, so to me, it's not comfort food, it's just another tex mex place that is over priced, and not really that good, but it's rare that their aren't always packed. Pappadeaux would do really well here too, or a Pappa's Seafood.

Agree on Los Tios. The food is just plain old school Tex-Mex, not really fantastic but their Margartias are awesome. If I have three margaritas there I need to be shoveled out of my chair. :)

  5. I never, ever rent a car when I'm out of town on business. I either use taxis, walk or Uber. You can get an Uber into downtown from this location for about $5-$7. I live right up the street and use Uber every weekend night. It's so cheap it's not even worth putting on the expense account.

That being said, you're a little under a mile from a tunnel entrance from here. If I lived here and worked downtown I'd walk it everyday unless it was storming.

  6. OK, I just counted. Almost 1/3 of the topics on the unread stream are garbage from bots. We've got 10 votes for getting rid of them on here and none for keeping. It's becoming more and more painful to come to this site to see real posts. Can someone please explain why the site has decided to use these spam bots? If you're getting paid for linking to news articles great, you have to make money. Otherwise you are just driving people away from the site for no reason.

Doesn't bother me. I'm not paying for the privilege of using this site.

If they are getting paid for it I would understand. If not, why clutter up the site with garbage that no one reads or comments on?

Sorry I missed this one.  Nothing is wrong, no major changes.

    Anyone else having issues?

Yes, the bots are ruining HAIF. I've ignored H. Ham and Otto Mation but still see them in the unread content feed. I find myself coming here less and less because I have to weed through so much garbage.

You might hate them but the reality is that they have been very effective in pushing the city to make it more bike friendly by adding bike lanes and the like.

We got bike lanes way before critical mass. They were mandated by the feds. Even my hardcore biking friends hate critical mass. The PR damage they've done is far worse than any good they've done.

SO I am asking your thought's on the legality of this idea:

Set up a meet sort of like critical mass. We all meet up and go for a "group drive/ride" on the entire BW8 loop...only we are all going to take up every single lane and drive as slowly as legally possible.dontknow.gif
Think it would work? I mean if I got at least a good 30-50 cars what could they really do about a chunk of cars driving really slow?dontknow.gif

I don't know about the legality of it but it would sure get a lot of people to hate you and your cause just like everyone hates critical mass. Just a bunch of a**holes who think raising awareness is doing something constructive.... we know what your cause is, we just don't care.

  11. I walked the Western edge of the property next to the cemetery this morning. There is definitely a lot of of survey activity going on. Benchmarks have been placed. They have marked a few squares around 6ft on each side with the word "Footing" inside. Wooden stakes are all over the lot painted orange. CenterPoint has come out and marked the gas lines.

Edit: After looking at the master plan I'd say the "Foooting" markings are where the theatre is shown.

The suburban campuses are far better and nicer than any downtown high rise could ever hope to be.  More flexible as well. Downtown isnt the end all, be all location.

A dissenting opinion? This cannot be allowed. :)  It's common knowledge that everyone wants to live in a small apartment downtown, ride a bike to work and eat wheat grass.

Seriously, I've worked in both and I prefer downtown but there are a LOT of people who don't agree with me. Often it seems that HAIF doesn't believe those people exist and that anything that doesn't drive everyone to live downtown is an evil conspiracy by Culbertson to destroy the world.

The chronicle article I read stated that the trading group was staying downtown and they were moving the supporting groups.

Either way this is horrible news. I don't understand, urban revitalization is at one of the highest points ever yet, so many of these large corporations are moving to the suburbs. Is this due to the fact that the people high up in the companies grew up during the era of suburban sprawl and don't see the appeal of urban areas like the new young folks see?

It's due to the oil crash. Remember that "Can the boom continue" thread? This is the answer to that question.
