  1. The developers website says the corner of 17th and Ashland, but there are four of them. And I don't know where the tea house is/was.

It's on the NW corner of 18th and Ashland.

The sales trailer is on the south side of 18th, which makes me wonder if they have not also procured property on that side, as well. I would think they woould have to if they're going to add more units in future phases per lwood's post.

  2. I hope this is the right thread. At one point, we seemed to have a bunch going on this.

I was starting to wonder if this project was a go. They haven't done much at the lot yet, save a little scraping of old asphalt. They are in sales mode now. They have a sales trailer on W. 18 (behind Heights Assembly of God)

    HAR shows listings ranging from

about $450k on the high end

to about $170k on the low end.

  3. Today's HBJ reports that as part of the celebration surrounding its convention at the GRB 1/23 through 1/30, Mary Kay cosmetics is making a $20,000 donation to The Old Sixth Ward Neighborhood Association in honor of its founder, Mary Kay Ash, who grew up in the neighborhood.

  4. The latest edition of The Leader indicates that project design on the bike trail is nearly finished, and that construction contracts are to be awarded in June.

Well, if it's in The Leader, it must be official :D

Additionally, a Houston Chronicle article includes an interesting squabble between the City, TxDOT, and METRO over an extension of the bike trail, from Shepherd to Hempstead Highway. Seems the City wants to link the bike trail to other trails, while TxDOT wants to build an attractive ditch over a mile long for freeway runoff, and METRO wants to make sure its commuter rail is not derailed.

Interesting...I had not heard about TXDOT's plans. It would make sense, at least, for the trail to continue through to TC Jester and connect to the trail at 11th. If it only went that far, that would allow for TXDOT's drainage dreams come true.

  5. Its rumoured he merely existed like Hal on 2001: A Space Odyssey

I know you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.

He's like Max Headroom, just a computer generated image.

He's real. He's sort of like Charlie with 4,400+ angels.

"Your assignment, Angels, is to find me at a building implosion, and offer me chocolate"

  6. We went through the house on Saturday. About 40 volunteers were doing major cleaning - inside and out. Polishing wood, polishing the fireplace fixtures, cleaning light fixtures, polishing the silverware, dusting on tops of door frames, cleaning window. Not sure if it had to do with the current issues or was just regular maintenance. We did notice, however, that the place was in need of some attention - trim painting being the most apparent. (I didn't get up on the roof to check it out. ^_^ )

It's a great edifice and a great example of a more gracious period. I particulalrly like the stonework on the outside. I snapped some shots of the (outside only, as allowed) and will upload later.

  7. You know, it's funny. I chuckled at the airing of Rosenthal's dirty laundry, but shrugged as far as it being a big deal. Then, I see this article where the GOP is trying to run him off!

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ro/5412024.html

So, apparently, the Harris County GOP is so scared of getting swept next November that THEY are putting the pressure on ol' Chuck. Have to say, I got a big laugh out of that.

Insiders in the Republican party (yes, I know a few, and they're very nice people as long as you don't discuss politics) have said that Rosenthal has been in their sites prior to this. His grandstanding that jeopardized cases early in his tenure really annoyed many HCRP leaders. However their facing the prospect of deposing an inumbent was distasteful. I guess they're getting over it (see: race for Harris County Judge).

  8. I know a bit about this, but could somebody post the full article on here so I can read it? thx

Well, I know this totally breaks Forum rules, but it's Christmas, darnit. So here it is...

  9. I drove down Heights blvd last night and noticed they posted a sign up for this now. I also noticed a sign on the east side of Heights Blvd advertising a new loft complex right on the bayou. I cant recall the name as I drove by quickly while mentally picturing the slum apartments being razed. "Something" 20 Lofts I think was the name of it....

    "Bridge 20 Lofts"

  10. From the HBJ...

A New York developer is blowing into the small city of Taylor Lake Village with a plan to construct a pair of towering buildings.

Two 19-story condo towers are being proposed for the north side of Clear Lake in Taylor Lake Village -- where no building stands taller than three stories. The 1.24-square-mile city is one of many located in the Clear Lake area, such as El Lago, Seabrook and Nassau Bay.

  11. No seafood, huh? I guess the sushi at Skybar is out then.

Rudy and Paco's on Postoffice is a favorite. (Note the dress code: No shorts at dinner).

Luigi's is great. The Merchant Prince at the Tremont is very good. The Steakhouse at the San Luis is nice (if you just want steak).

As far a s lodging, Mrs. Porchman and I like staying at the Holiday Inn at the San Luis Resort. It's a lot cheaper than the San Luis Hotel and you can get a gulf view without being right on Seawall Blvd.

If you're there for a longer time and really want to take in the water, the Galvestonian on the east end is great. No busy seawall traffic between you and the water, and you can watch the Ship Channel traffic. It's pricier than a hotel room, but you can chill your own wine and cook your own meals. Good beach walking down there, too.

  12. Cosmos Cafe is closing. Their final show is tomorrow night.

    From the HBJ:

"In an e-mail note to customers on Thursday, owner Pete Pallas said a combination of factors led to his decision, including his workload, not having enough customers willing to support live music, and the recent smoking ban introduced by the City of Houston."
