  1. It wouldn't in the least surprise me to learn that people in the Third Ward would rather have the area improve but remain their neighborhood. Some community roots go deep there, which they don't for the gentry. One imagines that if the work is done for "his" people it's work they want done, regardless of what the sages of HAIF think they should want. Such is American politics.
  2. It is discriminatory. But I also think there are undertones of racial ressentiment in much if not all of the commentary against Coleman. I take raciism for granted in US urban development practices. As with the discussion of door policies at clubs, there are all sorts of ways of discriminating without running afoul of the law, and there are people who are willing to proclaim their intentions. My question was simply if people are really saying that they want low income housing in Midtown or if they only wanted to rail against Coleman.
  3. OK, so can somebody tell me why Midtown would want the l-i housing in the TIRZ rather than elsewhere adjacent? I don't recall many places with ideas of their own future glory actually cultivating l-i housing as part of its growth plan. As for homeownership for those who can't afford it, great idea. We could package those loans as structured investment vehicles ...
  4. Yeah, it's slated to open in 2010. I first saw the sign last month. San Jose Clinic is a sliding-scale clinic now located near the ballbark with (I think) an outlying satellite. This building would consolidate them. Google San Jose Clinic Houston.
  5. Nicolas Lopez, 26, got into an argument with a group of men inside a nightclub in the 600 block of Hadley around 1:30 a.m. when he was stabbed in the chest and abdomen, authorities said. Chron article Would that be Howl at the Moon?
  6. Metamorphocise on LaBranch just east of Elgin right in Midtown. Local, not a chain, good rates, very personable staff. I've been a member for years and am very happy. You'll save close to $2,000/year over the Met if all you want is a gym.
  7. Is that part of Midtown even recognized by the Management District? I always thought their idea of Midtown ends at Main, or maybe Fannin.
  8. Vegas and Phoenix make sense. Phoenix is popular with the witness relo program.
  9. HCAD Lists 4 accounts at 2350 Bagby. The one that covers the development is still in AMLI's name. The others aren't, but are: METRO MIDTOWN PRTNRSHP %AMLI RESIDENTIAL PROP TR 308 E LANCASTER AVE STE 300 WYNNEWOOD PA 19096-2145 I assume there's some separation of development and rent-collection arms for whatever legit or nefarious tax and legal exposure reasons such handoffs are executed (q.v., e.g., today's NYTimes article on trying to sue an investor-owned nursing home).
  10. Yeah, I think it's good news. I live a few blocks away, and I drive past that block on the way to and from work. I'd much rather see something done for the people on the streets than have them just laying about. Either way reflects our tax dollars at work. One may also reflect good conscience.
  11. Actually, Musicman, I'd much rather have the homeless 24/7 (which I do) than the Rich's crew. I wouldn't want to be either one, the homeless for their living conditions, the Rich's crew for their smug-assed attitudes. Overall, however, I find the homeless much more civil. I've never called the cops on them. The Rich's crew has me on a first name basis with the evening patrols.
  12. Allow me, as a very local resident, to clear up a thing or two: 1. The street crowd is very much about Search. It was never a good scene, but it has gotten much worse in the past year or so. 2. The Rich's crowd is young, financially secure, and on most nights quite hetero. Spoiled 20-somethings for the most part who soon enough will move to the burbs, vote Republican, and yell at kids to stay the hell off their lawns. But for now they drive in drunk, piss all overy the streets and carry on. They're worse than the homeless, frankly, if you're trying to get some sleep. The "old" Rich's was a much better neighbor.
  13. Metamorphocize Midtown Spa is OPEN FOR BUSINESS. I was just there this morning, as I am five days a week.
  14. Yes, Europe has doscovered the auto, but the last place I lived, grocers discovered the shuttle bus. Yeah, a free bus running through high-density areas served by a super. But to forestall your question, no, I don't see anything separating most Houstonians from their autos.
  15. For me the major reasons for not walking to the store are Houston weather and my work hours. I grew up in Manhattan; my mother shopped on foot into her 80s. Everyone did. My brother regularly walks to the super in Seattle. When I've lived overseas I always walked to the store, unless I walked to the open market. Loved it!
  16. I clicked on the link for the architects' page, and the pictures in he first message in this thread come up on a page about the CENTRAL DOWNTOWN library renovation. What am I missing?
