  1. Don't mean to leave you folks hanging.

Couldn't get over to the house today but I'm supposed to after lunch tommorow. I gotta admit I'm having second thoughts though. The owner told me that everyone he's taken in there has gotten sick soon after coming out. Apparently it is REALLY nasty in there. I may swing by and get some new filters for my mask.

    flipper

Is it mold or what? Be very careful.

This is probably one of my favorite houses in Houston. Similiar in style to the Greer House by Richard Colley on Timberwilde and the Liedtke house on Longbow, also by O'neil Ford, this house is a stong combination of 60's modernism mixed with Texas regionalism. Definitely not the way I would have decorated the interiors, though.

I wish I was a millionaire when I see a house like this. THANK YOU for the post The interior decorating is surely not my taste either They have so much furniture in there, that it makes it hard to really see the rooms. I love the rough paneling look. The atrium is to die for. Wow,can you imagine looking out from an upstairs bedroom, and seeing that? Thanks again

  3. I feel sorry for 4517 Creekbend Dr Mod house knowing what going to happen to it.

    <_<

I do also. This house in my opinion, seems to have been very well maintained. There are other options that could be taken here. The front could use some updating. The kitchen could be modernized, rather than gutted. This house does not need to be flipped in my opinion.

  4. Did anyone else have the chance to see Eric Kuhne at the Brown Auditorium at the MFAH on September 12?

Very interesting man to listen to. And his projects in Europe and Central Asia were fantastic. We only saw his large-scale projects and not his smaller ones (such as those that would be applicable to inner-loop Houston), but it was still a fascinating presentation.

His theories concerning architectural purpose and intent were great. I'm no architect, so if someone else saw this presentation, please elaborate on this more eloquently than I'm able to.

I wish I could have seen the exhibit. In general, most architects are very interesting, and very cool people. The imagination involved in designing is a gift that very few people have. NOW,SO many people rely on CAD. My dad would design, and then make a model of what he wanted to achieve. I think you did a very good job,on reporting about the exhibit. THANK YOU!!!
  5. Houston beat Carolina today 34-21. The last touchdown by Carolina was just a blow off touchdown. The Texans had 34 unanswered points until that score.

It was areally good game.Dalas did well also. The new coach for the TEXANS is from Houston.

  6. 6 months? Holy crap. You might want to consider some marine varnish which will hopefully weather better than what you're currently using.

I agree completely.He/she is probably using a really cheap varnish,or not applying enough coats. I do not know what type of wood he is referring to. Some woods are much more porous than others Sealers have worked very well for me.After sanding the door down, you can apply a sealer. Then once you refinish the door, you can apply sealer again.

  7. Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations regarding a person to hire to refurbish/refinish a wooden front door? Many Midtowners who own Perry Homes have similair wooden front doors, that after years of weathering by rain and sun damage, start to show age. Would love to know someone who could come do a good job refinishing mine.

    Thanks!!

I don't know how much time you have available, but it's really easy to refinish a door. If you don't own one,you can rent electric sanders.I have refinished alot of doors. It really doesn't take that long to do so.

  8. Seriously this time, lol - You all can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that once a mailbox is in place, it becomes the property of the US Government. Tampering with mailboxes is a federal offence, that much I am sure of. Attaching any flag to a mailbox is illegal and a federal crime. Report it to the Postmaster.

Dear moni, tampering with mail in other people mailboxes is a federal offense. However, whatever mailbox you place is your personal property. DUH

  9. This picture really makes me want the city to create better historical preservation. There's plenty of other spaces to expand. We don't need to demolish existing building. That looks so colorful and vibrant. I love it.

This is a beautiful picture, and hopefully these places will be around for along time.

  10. I remember something I read on the FFA site or something that the FFA has no jurisdiction over airspace and the pilot has to beware of tall objects. I could be wrong though.

They do have jurisdiction under certain conditions. Of course pilots have to be aware of tall buildings, and you will notice alot of the taller buildings there in Houston are required to have like beacons on the top. We also have as you know, major fog issues regarding the Hobby Airport in particular. Besides, these buildings are way too cool to be trapped amongst alot of other structures. That's just my opinion of course.

  11. Just curious -- why the yawn? As recently as 10 years ago or so, a structure like this was impossible. Just a few years ago, it was thought impossible for socioeconomic reasons. It really puts it into perspective when it reaches the height of the world's tallest and still has over 1000 feet to go. It's equal to placing a JPM Chase building on top of the Sears Tower.

I'd be interested to see what people here think the political implications of such a project in an Arab country are. I'd also like to know what this means to future urban planning and building design. Can you imagine the safety engineering that would be required for such a structure here in the US? Can you imagine what it would do to Houston's urban core if the parking and transportation, electrical and plumbing, approaches to airports, financial, occupancy, etc. concerns all had to be addressed here?

Is there a city outside maybe NY or Chicago in North America that could support such a building? Could they really?

I'd think if any group would be interested in talking about this, it would be an architecture group.

I don't get the yawn either. There is no way that a structure like that would be able to be built in Houston. Way too much air traffic,I'm pretty sure

  12. Why would someone not hire a draftsman if he had years experience in designing residential homes? I had a client who said they could not hire me because a was not a licensed architect.

Are any of you guys draftsman?

I do not think that there are very many draftsmen, much less architects on this forum. There is no excuse for your client saying that if you are capable at your job

  13. was in RT yesterday and a lady i met @ jury duty asked me to come over and see one of the houses they inherited. it was absolutely amazing. all original, old curved staircase, original light fixtures, wide mouldings in the living/dining room. i have to keep her from gutting it. the furniture in there was all amazing too.

Wow,how cool is that? To get to see all of that.

  14. Off topic but...

You may already have donated them or you may have thrown them away, but if your father was an architect of any kind of importance and you don't want all his archives, then please have his archives donated to a library or University or something like that as opposed to just throwing them away if possible. You never know when someone might take an interest in his work!

    Jason

My mom is still living and to be honest with you I'm not sure what she has in regards to Dad's blueprints. It surely is nice of you to make this suggestion. I would never throw anything away regarding him. This might sound strange or something to you,but my Mom gave me his stamp after he passed away. It's one of my treasured possesions.

  15. What did the carhops do in those contests? Did they race to see who could bring and set up the food tray the fastest without spilling it? I've never heard of Prince's. But I've known Pig Stands. There were at least three in Beaumont. I read that it was a Texas chain, but that now most, if not all of the restaurants, have been experiencing serious financial difficulties. I read a case about a creditor closing one down, then going inside to get whatever money was in the cash register.

I guess the only thing that we have today that will come close to the carhop drive-ins is Sonic Drive-In.

What a cool car.Just like most of the ladies that worked at Princes.

  16. POINT conceded. You and whoever it was that posted about mods really made me think more about it. You really explained it so precisely. My dad loved mods alot, but paitences was not his best suit.He was always so busy, and his time was always so limited[ENFORCED BY HIM] total workalcholic his idea of relaxing was reading ARCITHECTURAL Digest. I SWEAR,I like to joke around but on this I'M not.MY house from the street has curb appeal but not any architetural details that you would write home about. Somebody mentioned facades where you are surprised after entering a home. I totally have redone the inside of house, and have 2 outside patio areas that are so cool. Totally native plants and trees,my back yard looks like a park.I need to focus more on commonalities rather than differences in architecture. I already paid this house house in JAN.I'm in the process right now to buy another one,I JUST haven't found it yet. I'm focusing now on exterior details,I WILL have no problem changing the interior. DANG,I love it. IT'S kinda stressful sometimes because I want everything to be a certain way.I don't do it for a living, although I HAVE redone several peoples homes here in McALLEN. I don't really get into the furnishings or anything. THATis a very personal thing, and my tastes are so ecletic.I love picking out tiles and paint.

  17. This sounds like excellent info. and just the kind of thing I am looking for. Can anyone concur with this or add to this if they know another way? All help is appreciated.

    [/quote

Wow,you guys sound like me.I received info from allstate that stated all kinds of waivers about the limited amounts that would be paid for flood damage. Here in McAllen we are a little farther than the coast than you guys. The good news is that my home is on high ground and my driveway is major sloped. However,we have to be prepared in case something really bad does happen.I took out an additional flood ins.policy just in case. Not with Allstate though
