  1. A few notes of clarification on the building being discussed:

    a. The structure, as currently envisioned, will include first floor retail and parking, probably two floors of parking and six to seven floors of office/studio lease space. The top floor of the garage will be designed for an art gallery, or similar space, with the roof of the garage as outdoor terrace areas.

    b. The project is in a very, very early design stage and will be a Class-A "green" structure with early 20th-century details. Equivalent-scaled structures might be the Lancaster downtown or The Plaza in Montrose.

    c. Target tenants will be neighborhood small businesses and individuals currently doing business in homes, garages, guest rooms, etc...within walking or biking distance and not wanting a heavy commute routine.

    d. Project is in commercial district and would only "border" the residential district of the Heights.

    e. Since it is primarily an office building there are considerations for the parking to be utilized after-hours by the nighttime oriented buinesses nearby for off-street parking which would limit the intrusion of parking into residential areas.

    f. This is the only information available at this time. Further postings will come in the near future.

    Thank you for your interest.

    Build it! We will come!

  2. I did the exact same walk with my mom when she was in town and we were hungry. The only thing we could find was an ice cream truck. The good news is that Hermann Park will soon have its own cafe/restaurant which is currently under construction. There is also a sandwich place in the TMC across from Memorial Hermann that's not bad, but I don't think its open on weekends. The nice thing about the eateries around Dryden is that they are open decent hours 7 days per week.

Another piece of good news is that there will be a few restaurants at ground level in the new Rice Collaborative Research Center near Dryden.

speaking of food, your username is one of my standby's. i wish they'd open more around houston.

  3. HUH? You have a huge portion of Memorial ( and their income) that have very easy access to this. Town and Country Village does a booming business and it's not exactly accessible from I-10 or the Beltway.

Most of us in the area use Memorial for getting around anyway, so I-10 access isn't an issue. Due to the amount of disposable income around here, I think it will have great success. It's built more as a CityCentre for the area, not a tourist attraction.

Most of these other Centers and Markets aren't visable from the freeways either.

I think you missed the point....We arent talking about demographics...of course the area is great.

I was referring simply to access. You have 2 huge freeways surrounding it and currently the only 2 feeders into the development are the little post office curved road (t&c ln) and the one leading to escalante's (t&c blvd).

So my main point was the bw8 feeder going N to 10. IF construction doesnt change before cc opens, this is not a viable access point. Just sucks they could not acquire all the land to 10. Once the roads are finished (yes i believe they will be one day, but not before this centER is ready), it would be ultimate to have I10 and BW8 feeders pull DIRECTLY in , as well as the aforementioned back roads.

  4. went by today. oh my god, the traffic. midway better hope the the BW8/i10 disaster gets fixed SOON. hell, throw some of the tribble workers out of the bridges. i was excited about citycentER but will now avoid that area like the plague. from memorial to 10 on bw8 feeder took 25 mins, no wreck.

some building looks like it has tenants , AT&T for one. its finished super nice, white exterior w/ some tiling....is this still the center or something else? the ones in the crane area look to be a drab tan color.

  5. Hey there, Vergs. Welcome to the HAIF.

Just so you know, the Kroger on 11th is about to undergo a HUGE renovation. It will not only be bigger and newer than the one on W Gray, it will be bigger than the one on Buffalo Speedway down in your old 'hood. It will actually be the largest Kroger in the Southwest.

link??? would love to read more about that. what on earth are they gonna do about parking??

  6. Night school doesn't sound appealing. Probably the only way it could be done would be to go to a school in Houston. No way could I go all the way out to TAMU or something like that. I'd rather take 2-3 years off and just get it all done at once, anyway. Which company do you work for? How do you like it? Any other oil company employees: how do you like working for your company? Do they treat you pretty well, other than giving good compensation/benefits?

Yup, it would be have to be in the Houston area and there are some decent options, but it takes a ton of dedication for no sure payoff, IMO.

As far as being happy with a co, it will all vary. A lot depends on the quality of people in your team and your manager. This can change drastically within organizations depending on which part of a company you go into (duh). Its a gamble - but as you interview try to feel around and focus on the most important thing - the type/quality of work. Since you are coming from Coal, research the variances in geological work as far as Onshore US vs. Deepwater GoM vs. Foreign projects. Seismic interpretation etc will be big in the newer exploration areas: Offshore Africa/Vietnam/Carribbean..the list goes on. If you are able to decipher a specific type of work within "Oil" it will help narrow your search quite a bit

    Best of luck

  7. What kind of reorganizations are these companies going through? You would think that everyone in the oil industry would be doing extremely well right now and hiring left and right. What am I missing here?

It was really only one of the majors. No one seems to get anything they do anyway.

Most companies are keeping everyone they possibly can and hiring more regularily.

As far as the education thing, most will help you 80-100% -IF- you do it outside of work hours. (night school, uggg) Usually with some sort of contract in place too, ie. you stay for 2 yrs after graduation. The majors often have programs for the tenured elite employees that will send them off the top schools and get a master's while still on the payroll. These are extremely difficult to get but do exist.
