  1. 1. New to Pearland (central area) 2. Have no relatives here and friends live in other cities. 3. Commute to U of H daily, but as of yesterday my car is in a local repair shop due to problems with the distributor. Can anyone suggest reliable taxis or bus service lines to Houston, which will take me directly to UH or at least to the nearest bus transit line? I tried browsing zipcar.com and they only serve Rice U. Thanks.
  2. I have more than 3 years of experience in web design, and once I got here I immediately secured a non-web job while building up my portfolio. Recently I started looking for web design/Flash related jobs in Houston via Craigslist, Google, and independent job boards. But I kept getting results from Austin and North Dallas. I did get results from Houston..but they were primarily limited to work-at-home SEO (Search Engine Optimization) jobs, whereas in North Dallas I found actual companies like Blockdot.com, Netsuccess.com. I am NOT bashing Houston's local web design industry, but I am curious why there are more dot-coms in other cities like Austin and Dallas. This is what I want to do..I want to finish my education at U of H and find a job (if it's entry-level that's OK) at a dot-com that will offer a variety of work experiences for me. In my former city I worked at a dot-com as a production artist. I doing the tedious work of editing images for the developers, but on the flipside I was learning CSS and other skills of the trade. When I moved to Houston I thought it would be possible to pick up where I had left off, but it's becoming a challenge because I've searched through Craigslist, Hotjobs, Monster.com and Jobing.com with no concrete results. Can anyone recommend company directories (online or print) for Houstonians skilled in interactive design? I wouldn't mind telecommuting with dot-coms outside of H-town but I would prefer to stay here. Thanks!
  3. Hi, can anyone recommend me auto shops that specialize in headlight repair (I have a 1999 Nissan Sentra) within the city of Pearland? I went to the Midas on Broadway and they told me they don't fix headlights..only tail lights. Thanks
  4. WHAT are my alternatives for commuting to Houston for work? Yes..I have a Doomsday Scenario that I might have to face one day. Can anyone advise me on the best car rental (not the ones near Bush Intercontinental, because I live close to Pearland) service for commuters? Or is there a bus line that connects Houston with cities like Alvin, Pearland, Pasadena, etc. Is there a commuter train I could possibly take? Thanks.
  5. Hi everyone, I hope you're enjoying Spring in Houston! So far things are going great. I have a job but now the routine is wearing me out a little, which is why I'm starting to look for things to do away from the Houston Galleria, my place of work. I'm a single guy who is very web savvy and I'm curious about webzines or blogs or other online community sites that advertise a variety of events/activities for single adults. Lately I've been eating out with my co-workers, going to bars, and we also had fun at the clubs on Main. That's cool but I'd love to mix things up a bit. I like art, but not too interested in going to art gallery events featuring fine artists or sculptors. I am thinking about going to events hosted by the universities in the Houston area. Thanks for your recommendations!
  6. Hi, I noticed that there isn't a forum on the website titled "Employment Issues", that's why I decided the "City Hall" forum would be the best place for my question. First, I already have a job working part-time in retail. I am starting to hate the job because the hours are long even though it was advertised as a part-time job. I am new to Houston and a part of me wants to explore the city and learn more about it, unfortunately I have only Thursday and Sunday completely off. Right now I'm taking steps to find new work..on craigslist, here on HAIF, visiting a Houston WorkSource office. But the huge lingering question in the back of my mind is: What types of industries are most Houstonians employed in? Is it cheifly in the retail industry? Restaurant? Manufacturing? Industry? Or, administrative? Where can college students in Houston (degree/non-degree) find work? In my city of origin, there are many students, and graduates who forced themselves to work in retail because they couldn't find any work in their careers. On the flip side, I am grateful that I do have the ability to pay the bills, but the job is very physical..it's boring, and I'm not learning something that will become beneficial in my career. Internships are beneficial, but as we all know, they don't pay any money.
  7. Hi, I just came from a barbershop that I found through the Yellow Pages. They did a really great job EXCEPT..they're so far away in the northwest part of Houston and I live near TSU (where I'm attending as well). I'm basically looking for really good barbershop that's close to TSU, University of Houston or near the Galleria area, because I am working at the mall. Thanks!
  8. This is my observation..from someone who just moved to Houston and got a job at the Galleria. I can't see how people are going to expand the Galleria when it is pretty much locked into place as it is. The 610 on one side, the office buildings on another, all of those older strip malls, and then regular residences (not condos) smacked right next to the Galleria area. There needs to be another transportation option for the Galleria, because in the future no matter what new store opens, you will see more and more people going to the place and the traffic on Westheimer would get worse. Is there a reason why a subway can't be built? Is Houston below sea-level? A subway line could help alleviate parking for many families, individuals, people going to work at the Galleria.
  9. Will it expand to other parts of the city? Chicago, SF, New York, and other cities have utilized rapid transit for maximum effect. My cousin for example lives in Union City, CA but he can take the BART train to downtown without worrying about traffic. Just wondering. Perhaps a service that extends to different areas of the loop, connecting Sugarland in the Southwest, Pearland or Pasadena in the Southeast and even Hobby Airport. A rail line to Bush Airport as well.
