  1. everyone should read Marx, once you understasnd communism it makes so much more sense than any other system. To bad it would never work.

Nice recovery . . . I was gonna ask Jeebus to slap you on principle alone. j/k

  2. U.S. Allowed Secret Ethiopia-N.Korea Arms Deal

In news from Africa, the New York Times is reporting the Bush administration recently allowed Ethiopia to complete a secret arms purchase from North Korea in violation of international sanctions. The United States allowed the arms delivery to go through in January shortly after Ethiopia invaded Somalia.

    How bad is this?

Assuming you are using the term "bad" in the context of is it right or wrong, the real question is "does this transaction benefit the U.S. in anyway?" The U.S., like every other country, acts on what it perceives is good for the U.S. not based on what is right and wrong in a philosophical sense.

  3. HAIFers,

I have a small leak on a portion of my roof that is flat and about 12' x 12' (master bedroom). I only need a quick, provisional fix since, in the long term, we likely will build a room on top of that master bedroom. I am considering doing this provisional fix myself. Does anyone know any website where I can quickly educate myself on what is involved such as what are my options for materials, price, risks, etc.

    You help is greatly appreciated.

  4. I would like to try my hand at flipping a home. I dont mind something that needs work, i think that fixing up a house would be half of the fun. Do you guys have any tips or things that I should look out for? Keep in mind that I am 20 years old, and before anything gets under way, I need to convince the bank to hand me over the money (to help with this, a friend is going to help with this to keep costs down for each of us). If you guys have any tips, or any areas that I should be looking for, I would greatly appreciate it!

I am not a flipper (but am a homeowner) but be sure to understand all the costs and risks beforehand. Do you have any experience remodeling or "fixing" a house? If not, you will find that actuals costs usually far exceed estimates. What about contractors? You do realize these folks can be worse than car salesman right? You mentioned a friend . . . well, there are no friends when it comes to business. Make sure whatever he has agreed to or is responsible for is in writing. Make sure you understand all the costs of owning a home such as taxes, insurance, maintenance/repairs, and what if there is theft? Well, just listen to the flippers on this site - they have much more and better advice than I can give.

  5. I went to public school, and a poor one in a small town at that. I turned out just fine. I'm working on my PhD at BCM. My gf is the same: she'll have her CPA license next year. UH was cheap and did the trick just fine.

I don't get the private school fantasy. Good students will rise to the top anywhere. Private school seems like a way to pretend a kid is special or talented even if really isn't. A talented kid will get by anywhere and make the most of his/her environment. Spend your money on things that really do enrich your child's educational experience, not just the illusion of such. Encourage self-directed learning.

Word . . . and props to you both!

  6. oh i thought you were trying to say that he was from another country and were putting this off as a cultural difference.

you said "He doesn't have good english and just to show you an example. When playing for the Nets, he said "the ship be sinking", a reporter replied "how far do you think you will sink?", he says "the skies the limit".

i see this more as lack of education rather than cultural differences.

Greco is right - culture is what makes us unique because we are so diverse although things are beginning to look a lot like the U.S. in other parts of the world also. You also have a point that Richardson may lack education but that does not mean that he does not have "culture."

The best definition I have heard regarding culture is something along the lines of "predetermined answers about life, death, and everything in between." Race may or may not play into it. For example, many young Hispanic men in the East End tend to buy trucks (rather than cars) when they are old enough to buy a vehicle. It could be what turns the girls on? Race happens to be common in that particular case of "culture." But what about the kids from college that were always in their study group (multi-racial) even on Friday nights who accepted nothing less than a 4.0 of themselves. Race did not create that culture; a desire to excel did.

Greco mentioned that Richardson sometimes uses ebonics to communicate. Obviously, that is part of the culture of the people where he comes from - wherever that may be. Some white guys go out of there way to learn ebonics to appear cool. That is also part of the culture of that subset of people.

Even on this forum people tend to be legalistic in their responses. That is part of the culture that is employed by those who contribute.
