  1. Interesting idea about HCHSA being a vehicle for that kind of pursuit. I think that out of all the potential park builders, Paramount would be great, as would Busch Gardens. In fact, Busch Gardens may be better because it already has built in name recognition. I also think that if a park isn't located south of town, then a location in the northeast along US 90 or maybe even somewhere along the Grand Parkway would be fine...as long as it's in Harris County
  2. Don't know more about HP, but I think that the new energy company will probably just absorb office space or maybe even more likely go to the Energy Corridor (although my hopes are for DT).
  3. I think Main and Dallas is open now too!
  4. I actually think it was the hotel component that was abandoned.
  5. So did anyone notice that the replacement facility will be 1.5 million square feet! Wow, right? No. 1 million square feet is just parking. The building will be the other 500,000.
  6. I saw the Starbucks on Fannin @ Preston yesterday. The signs are up outside and they are pretty big given the size of the building. They will definitely have a lot of visibility.
  7. hmmm.....one wonders if semipro would have to walk into a wall of the pavilions once it is opened in order to believe that it's actually there.
  8. I think the Magic Mountain news surprised me as well--but Splashtown's news doesn't. I personally think that the McSchlitterbahn in Galveston would have done a number on Splashtown anyway. I think Houston would be just fine without a theme park if it comes to that. Nashville seems to be holding up pretty well long after the closure of the iconic Opryland (and it's replacement with the urbanist-preferred Mills mall--Opry Mills). Nevertheless, I think it would still be nice to have one especially for those out-of-town family members who travel to your city (esp. the younger ones).
  9. Well I think that Pavilions all of a sudden give a lot of attractiveness to the Humble Building's retail spaces. Who knows, maybe that block or so of Main could become somewhat of a "fashion" block with American Apparel, a new shoe store, and maybe the Pavilions would have some clothing type stores along Main. This is in addition to what will be the Macy's.
  10. Looks to me that they are definietly planning on capturing the courthouse and legal crowd with this location as well as a lot of the baseball crowd that walks from the Preston station.
  11. I'm surprised no one has asked for a follow up on this--or provided another link with info. So when is this supposed to open and where will it be? In the Courtyard Marriott, Sakowitz, or Pavilions? EDIT: Nevermind, from their website, the address given is the Courtyard by Marriott/Humble Tower Building. I wonder what the hours will be??? Even though many here prefer un-corporate coffee, let's face it--a Starbucks gives a different connotation than say, any other coffee spot. It's also cool that it will basically be at the Main Street Square station.
  12. Yeah, it opened last Thursday--and everything on the menu cost $1!
  13. It's a shame, b/c a restaurant there would make a lot of sense. It's at the busiest METRORail station in downtown (maybe the busiest outside TMC), it's right across from Foley's, and it's right at Main Street Square. You would have a great view of the fountains at Main Street Square from the rooftop portion as well. I would imagine that even the lunchtime traffic would be enough to justify it. Then again, I'm not a businessman either. Hopefully this will still happen sometime in the near (2-3 years) future.
  14. Good post. I especially agree about the speculators.
  15. I can say that there is a young lady at the Walgreens at Smith and Elgin who is very attentive and very good. She's likely 18-20, but seems to care pretty good about her job--at least in my dealings with her.
  16. Agreed on Walgreen's vs. CVS. I also forgot about the drive thru.
  17. lol, well I guess the bright side could be that it'll be the CVS with the best hours along the rail line. But I will agree that the chances of this thing being pedestrian-oriented are.....is there anything less than nil?? I think the extent of "pedestrian" access will be a painted path through the parking lot. What does this mean when a CVS--one where the parking lot will be bigger than the building--can be put in an area with supposedly rising land values?
  18. So I take it that this thing will be a little better than the dimebox, flea circus carnivals that are in the shopping center and mall parking lots all the time (I promise you it seems that Northwest Mall has one every other month at least). I think the cool idea is that this could be one of the first (and maybe this company's first) indoor, climate controlled, full carnival.
  19. WOW! One of those ornamental squares can now be seen because of the little piece of facade missing. That building is beautiful!!! We can only hope to see this beauty restored very very soon!
  20. A few days ago I noticed that at the Main Food Mart and $ Store (I think that's the name)--it's the southernmost of the few convenience stores on Main--part of it's '60s era facade was missing. The best part about it is that it looked to reveal a great old facade. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? I hope not, because it looked to be very nice from the glimpse that I got. Anyone know about the history of the bldg?
  21. The Ben and Jerry's does seem to be coming along nicely--albeit rather slow. Also, the Nestle's recently put that construction paper up maybe a week or two ago--until then, I was getting a little concerned because it looked like nothing was happening. I don't know if the fact that they put up paper is encouraging, but they at least put up the paper without taking down the Nestle's signs--I am glad about that.
  22. My understanding is that the canoe shop would be there in sort of a response to flooding concerns for other entities. And when I say canoe shop, I mean a place where people can rent canoes as well as buy other gear apparently, but the nature of the operation would make it adjustable to potential flooding risks.
  23. Yes! This angle (or combination of angles) always amazes me! Even moreso on the ramp from South Loop eastbound to 288 northbound--it's striking to say the least. I also second the notion of the 610 Ship Channel bridge. Downtown looks so close, yet so far away. Another angle of DT that I think is underappreciated is inbound on Harrisburg Blvd. It's a great angle that maybe some of our expert photographers could capture.
